I Recently changed the name of my Jeep Wrangler to WRATTLER on the hood. The driver door says Wild Weasel. You’ll be happy to know I just ordered a Cobra Air Command Sticker for each side.
I think this was the last vehicle of the toyline I purchased too, it was either this one or the A.G.P. I remember I got it at a Rite-Aid next to where I worked. I still picked up figures there sporadically for the next few years, to a point where I felt embarrassed about it. Today I'd be proud to pick up 80's Joe toys in any store, not that they'd be available, but it's funny how that embarrassment comes on at a certain age when you want to be taken as more adult but then fades when actual maturity sets in.

Back then there weren't very many adult collectors into G.I. Joe, so it's understandable that there might be a little bit of embarrassment about buying toys back then. But yes, after a few years, when you've proven you can do real grown-up things. those childhood pleasures don't seem so embarrassing.

It looks bright orange to me in the video. I probably wouldn't have wanted this because of the colors but once again the details were very nice on the rocket and the figure. I like the helmet on the file card best it was different than what the Star-Viper was wearing. I would have been furious with the lazy paint job had I been the designer of this fine craft! Perhaps Hasbro expected us to paint it ourselves? Stellar review HCC 788!
excellent review my friend.. although this came out after I stopped collecting I like this ship as for the star viper ...he looks like he would fit in better with the iron grenadiers definitely not a bad piece though
Thank you! Yeah, I could see this working for Iron Grenadiers. In fact, he has the exact colors for Iron Grenadiers in 1988. And Destro likes to build futuristic vehicles and weapons systems. I hadn't thought of that.

Awww I had this one! As a 3D animation rigger, one the parts I hate about the job is cleaning up mesh skinning, especially in the crotch and armpit areas. The way GI Joe pelivis were made, is sort of a nice guide shape when it comes to dealing with skinning 3D character's crotches.

Thank you! Yes, they did a great job with the animation in the ads. Oddly, the ad for this toy was produced after the Sunbow animated series had been cancelled. So I guess they were still contracted for the cartoons. I'm not certain about that. In some of the post-1987 ads you can hear the same voice actors from the cartoon series.
Wow!!!!!! Not only do you have force lightning ability, you also have a electronic implant. I'm sure windows vista was compatable with your implant. Did your implant come with AOL or did you use compuserve,altavista or netscape to browse the net. Then again the 3.5 floppys would nave still been in use twenty years ago. The stiletto was a cheap and easy toy, nothing too much to mess up. the star-viper could have used some gold paint on the boot straps or snaps. at this point in the line i moved away from vehicle to figures only. i did pick up the adder, iron grenider AGP the tiger force tiger paw and cobra mini-hover craft as my last vehicles of the vintage line. Glad you didn't scrape the depths for a review, or try to go big. a solid mid-tier review is refreshing. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, Matt. These middle-of-the-road toys need some attention, too. The highs and the lows are fun, but most items will fall somewhere in the middle.
When I was thinking about the Star-Viper's implant, the idea that this guy had 80's tech stuck in his head forever made me giggle. It's like having an 8-track player implanted in your head. When they stop making software that is compatible with it, what the hell are you going to do with it??

I had Stilleto as a kid! I though it was drived by Astro Viper (here in Brazil, the vehicles were sold separatedly from the figures)
That is interesting. It makes sense to have a rocket plane piloted by the Astro Viper. He may have looked good in the cockpit.
Is it just me or does the Star-Viper look more like an Iron Grenadier figure than a Cobra one?

I really enjoy your videos very much. I was born in the 60s and had wonderful memories playing with my 12in joes. I also have several of them from when I was a child with several play sets. Then I found your channel and you got me HOOKED on 3 3/4 line. For the past 3 years I have collected a massive collection. Thanks for sharing your memories and thoughts for the 80s joe line. Please keep up the great work and ill keep on collecting and reading the joes comics. You are the best gi joe reviewer there is. A follower til the end

Though Star-Viper's name has clear lineage within the toy line, I wonder how much it might owe to the Stellar Stiletto looking an awful lot like the Vipers from "Battlestar Galactica."

I’m conflicted about this toy. Like you it was at the point I stopped buying toys, but still got the comics. I didn’t own this toy, but I fondly remember the story the star viper was in.
The Star Viper is a great figure. The Stiletto is a mixed bag. I like it’s concept. It looks cool. But it’s rejection of basic engineering is a problem. Nazi Germany, the USSR and USA all had programs for space fighter/bombers and none look like this because you can’t have all that engine detail going through reentry without burning up. It’s like calling a dude with a bazooka on a unicycle a tank. It does look cool despite it’s impracticability. I guess COBRA has heat resistant stuff we never considered. But don’t make me do that stuff.
I agree. The Star-Viper is a top tier figure, the vehicle while awesome, isn't as awesome as The Night Raven, for example.

The star viper looks like he has droopy puppy dog ears lol. Also, with the gold accents he would have fit in well with the iron Grenadier’s. Maybe they should have went with silver accents to match the ship?
Ironic. This was your last vehicle to purchase while this was my first. I remember going to Brindles during the summer of 1988 and picking this up ushering in my obsession with G.I. Joe. I too used this as a super sonic jet fighter at least till I got the Crusader for Christmas of 1989. I was always perplexed how the Stiletto and Firebat landed with out landing gear. It makes perfect sense for Cobra to train there Star Vipers to land in a nearby body of water and wait to be rescued. If they are lucky to have that luxury.
Hey, that's pretty cool that this was your first impression for a G.I. Joe vehicle. It seems natural to use this as a jet fighter.
Cobra pilots never had it very good. They were required to have life-altering surgery. And most of them will end up getting shot down by G.I. Joe. It's a hard, and often short, life.

Hmm. I think the Star-Viper is a Top tier figure. Love the red visor, and all black body with gold trim. Excellent figure. I might agree with you on the Stilleto. I think it's pretty cool for sure, but not compared to the Night Raven or probably the Rattler. So, split for me. Funny, how you got out of GI Joe's in '88, I'm assuming, and didn't care for anything after at the time, and now you have all the worst figures the 90's had to offer. Got back into it, and started collecting things you wouldn't touch with a 10 ft. pole back then. Interesting.
I agree. The Stilleto is definitely in the top 5 best Cobra aircraft. The Star Viper is in the top 4 of Cobra pilots.
The best 4 Cobra aircraft being the Rattler, Night Raven, Mamba, Stilleto, and Hurricane VTOL.
The best Cobra pilots being Wild Weasel, Strato Viper, Star Viper, and Vapor.
I haven't quite figured out which ones are number 1 yet.
@John Soehnlen Isn't Strato-Viper a beautiful figure? Man! I have 3. I like the Gyro-Viper's for the Mamba too. Vapor is also awesome. Wild Weasel is excellent. I love red. And we already discussed the Star-Viper.
@@christianhafer9819 Strato Vipers are awesome. I'm glad that they were made sleeker than other figures. Great detailing and color scheme. Perfect figure for the Night Raven. Nothing after it has surpassed it as a pilot/aircraft pairing.
Gyro Vipers are cool but I don't think they quite measure up to Strato Viper, Star Viper, Wild Weasel, or Vapor.
I love how they designed Vapor with the Cobra emblem on his chest. That's a figure with details that go unnoticed.
@John Soehnlen Well, it's an excellent figure that goes unnoticed, I guess. He looks like a robot with that large red eye. I have three Gyro-Viper's for each section of the Mamba like the 3 Strato-Viper's to man the Night Raven.
@@christianhafer9819 I only have two Gyro Vipers and I'm slowly working on getting the Mamba to completion. Definitely an awesome vehicle but I think the Night Raven is better. In order, I would go Night Raven, Rattler, and Mamba. After that, it's kind of a toss up between the Stilleto, Hurricane, and Firebat.
i don't distinctly remember this one as a kid..but i know i had it at some point. i think i might have scored this in a charity shop or maybe a yard sale? looking back on it now...my only real complaint with it is that it doesnt seem like it should be a part of Cobra. Am i the only one that thinks this would fit in perfectly with the destro and the iron grenadiers? like if this was cobra....they should have made it Blue and Red or maybe Black with red (like the ravens). Also...am i the only one that sees this as more a marine craft than an actual rocket ship?
i agree with u with the ship itself...def middle tier. i think i like the figure more than you do...i actually like his odd helmet..but again...should have been done in cobra colors.

I see you didn't get the complimentary butt implant to prevent leakage caused by the brain implant. You may want to look into that.

Make the silver parts brass and it would make a perfect Iron Grenadiers vehicle.
However I am not impressed with this toy over all. The people who designed the vehicles in the first few years of the toy line would have made some thing better.
I remember being slightly disappointed with this one. I enjoyed it enough, though.
I wonder if some sort of rudimentary landing gear would have been better.
Great vid and for an otherwise good year of Joes I never liked the figure or the vehicle and as no place in my collection. The "Space Era" of the Joe line was what began to get under my skin and would be the road to failure for the toyline. Looks like it may have been envisioned as a water vehicle then poorly re-purposed for Space. Also the gold on the Star Viper wears off it you even blow on it.
Cool figure especially. The vehicle is cool too, but the figure is definitely top of the line.
The cheap looks and hollow feel, turned me off to this vehicle. I wished that the Star Viper was packaged individually, or in a Cobra pilot multi-pack, that would have been cool too!
I have have an implant attached to my spinal cord, it doesn't give me super-speed or anything like like. it gives me wicked farts and controls chronic pain.

The Star-Viper is an awesome figure. Top tier. The Stilleto is cool, but there's cool Cobra air crafts for sure.
