- Actors Mel Gibson and David Argue and director Peter Weir talk with TV host Mike Walsh about the film 'Gallipoli' (1981).
Gibson and Argue discuss playing characters that might seem innocent or naive to 1981 audiences and Gibson describes the physical challenges of his role.
'Gallipoli' was an immediate success in Australia and attracted international acclaim when it was released in 1981. The film showed Gibson’s dramatic range as an actor just months before 'Mad Max 2' (AKA 'The Road Warrior') cemented his worldwide fame.

He moved to Australia at the age of 12, right before his teens. He
wasn't yet at the critical stage and that's why he acquired the
Australian accent naturally.
And his wife was Australian, they lived there...
Before Mel lost his accent.
+Minkki82, Americans don't have accents.
It's funny because certain actors who come over to the UK who play the part of American characters, like the new Spiderman, can lose their accent, I don't know how they lose it, because their definitely not impersonating the American accent because there isn't one, Americans are how people without accents sound, and it's impossible to impersonate a none-accent.
Blue Glass Productions what????
+raleighman3000, It's ok, I don't actually think that way, I'm mocking the way certain Americans think.
The ironic thing about the American accent is this, depending on which part of America your in, the people there will talk a certain way i.e. have an accent, but most Americans insist that they don't have one.
Kate Winslet pulls the best American accent out of all of them.
The Midwest accent is considered to to be the standard accent here in the states. I grew up in California but my dad is from the Midwest as are a lot of transplants to this state. I've never been told I have an accent but if you're bordering Canada, live in the Northeast or South then we say you have an accent.
Excellent clip! It's obvious he was filming Mad Max 2 at this time due to the streak in his hair.
He's so beautiful. Best looking man ever.
Jes.
Lol, Mel's giggle at 00:58 when the anchor says" Tell us about Snowy".
I'm so used to Mel speaking with an American accent
Wow 😍😍
The aussie accent basically fake. Hes American, moved to Aus at age 12.
GuitarGuy Not fake just environment
Same.
@@GUITARTIME2024 his wife Australian, kids grew up in Australia, his extended family all in Australia, and his nana is Australian so he has a strong connection to both countries 😊
@@smokeybirdman whatever. He moved to aus from Poughkeepsie, New York at 12. Parents not aussies, siblings not aussie. He deliberately cultivated that accent (which he lost by the 90s).
Being that he was born in the US and came to australia in his tween years I'm sure he can switch accents if he wants to when needed. But the guy has the sanity of an aussie.
So he has normal sanity
@@jamestiehuis6239 he has something
I have russian accent but I'm brazilian
Insanity? Don't be such a bigot.
He had a great accent, pity he lost it😢
young Mel was so handsome 😻😻😻
a fascinating interview.
Mels Australian accent sounds very similar in tone and pitch to Hugh Jackman
Wow, I'm not a homosexual, but he's got to be one of greatest looking guys ever.
Colin Montgomery no argument from me...😀
Sentimental Bloke 1 interesting, except I am a girl...
So?
Sentimental Bloke 1 how can I be a poof?
It's 2018, you can be what you want.
Mel's American accent sounds so exaggerated whenever I hear interviews, I think he sounds more natural speaking like an OZ.
Today I learned Mel is an Aussie. How did I never know this?
He's American born in New York, but moved to Australia at the age of 12.
@@tiadaid his grandparents are from australia/england so he does have australian links
His mother is Irish
He was so young and beautiful.😊
He was American from the start he only moved to Australia as teen.
There’s a thing called ‘nationality’ and his nationality is American, Australian, and Irish. And his ethnicity is Irish from his mum’s side, don’t know from his dad.
@@sweetestaphrodite no one asked
*@8ball*
No one asked for you to be born, but here we are.
*@walter white*
I’m sorry you don’t know the difference between nationality and ethnicity.
@@sweetestaphrodite mainly American but I don’t think any Australian
Mel gibson😍😍😍😍
Mel Gibson was only 25 when this took place
As someone already pointed out. This took place during or just after the filming of MM2. Cant help thinking how much younger Gibbo looks compared to his MM2 Max. Also how hyper is he...never seen him this wired. Nerves maybe.
He's always been like that
He was a coke addict
@@WesleyB-Rook Says who?
@@nenabunena Nah. Seen plenty of interviews. Hes never this wired.
@@philmellor4885 says himself
Mel smile😍😍😍
He was born & raised in the US before age 12. & has now lived in the States for most of his life.....if anything his Aussie accent was his code switching. His NY American accent was probably way more dominant anyway.
Agreed. He says he wanted to fit in.
Hes cool handsome and charming as hes got bi pola thats why hes always on edge hed get drunk to numb him self out i love mel gibson for real i feel sorry for him because everyday is a battle for him its sad
@Frank. T money isnt happiness.
Mel Gibson was never comfortable being interviewed was he and who can blame him. Some of those interviewers are whacko.
Mel's also whacko, they can smell their own crazy.
he has bipolar disorder. He's not whacko.
He is Manic Depressive and also he was a heavy Alcoholic at that time.
I was just debating this with someone who didn't think he was from OZ or ever had an accent. I swore he always had one and just watched a recent interview where he looks like santa and sounds American tho he is he lived in OZ most his life like Gillian Anderson and England and she still has an accent. I always thought he played it up... And edited to add he is American but lived in OZ a long time.
He learned it to fit in. His real accent is American. Its code switching.
guy in the brown jacket looks like john mayer
Ken Carlson ikr!!
Aussie actor David Argue..played snowy in Gallipoli
Wow. He really does.
just seems like a cool guy
They all look so young o_0
The guy who are in this show played with Carl Weathers(Apollo Creed in Rocky and Rocky 2 3 4.) in Hurricane Smith 1992 movie.
His mannerisms while talking are exactly the same as Guthrie Govans!
he still the same, which is good
Hispaniolan 93 except he lost his accent.
Hispaniolan 93 And he's sober
I like Ray Martin, but I will maintain Mike was a better interviewer & his researchers were better at finding great subjects to talk about. Lost count of how many celebs often said, "No one has ever asked me that before."
awesome.
He has completely lost his accent... Wtf
I know right, and like a few of his kids were born in Australia and non of them have accents 🥺
*@书中自有黄金屋*
lmao sorry I meant *none of them have Australian accents
Remember reading an interview where he said he had to learn the accent once they settled in Australia or he'd get beaten up. So, looks like he shed his American accent to get the Australian one and then went back to the American one.
His real accent is American. Hes American.
@@GUITARTIME2024 It's not about real or fake. He switched to an Australian accent to adapt to his life there. Post age 12, he grew up speaking Australian. That's the reason we hear an Aussie pull in his American accent, in his early Hollywood movies.. even in Lethal Weapon 1.
With the mad max haircut
Goodness gracious
To all Mel Gibson fans stay tuned for more stories In the up coming documentary Mad Max Exposed
This man is American
You can check Mel's discoloured hair on side! Probably, at the time, he was acting for MM2.
His eyes tell me his on something, pot or grog.
Grog. Because he abused alcohol since he was 13 and until his adult years. Basically he was a heavy Alcoholic most of his life.
How fast can u run
Fast as a leopard.
Funny how Mels switched his aussie accent to an americam accent nowadays..
How long was Mel stuck with his Ozzie accent
Bruh they were all coked out of their minds
for those wondering mel gibson never “lost his accent” he was born in Ny, and is an american. He moved to Australia at 12 and this is an accent he acted not one that was his own.
He clearly picked up this accent from living there. The Australian accent was natural to him at that point, not something he was putting on for the cameras. If you don't believe me, watch the first Lethal Weapon film where he's trying (without total success) to hide his Aussie accent.
He has said it was acted, but it wasn't. If you watch press interviews around the time of 'Man Without a Face', you can hear his accent was slipping between, like half-half American and Australian. Around 1998 or so is when he began losing his Australian accent.
Gold
Great movie
❤️💥
Mel looks like a cross between Dan Stevens and Colin Farrell here
Mm..kay
young jack nicholson
mel had a weird look in his eyes like hes on something
Is it just me, or does he sound like an American trying to talk with an Aussie accent?
It must be hard for him to keep up his fake American accent day in day out.
Funny how Gibson has lost his Australian accent.
MEL GIBSON >>>>> leo dickaprio
I see some people defending his ''nationality''. America can keep him.
Kind of weird vibe from Melvin
His arrogance is breathtaking.
I read that he lived in australua from 12 til I'm not sure when because its not so transparent but he wouldn't have just lost his accent and it sounds extremely fake here coming from someone with an Australian born mother and grandmother.
He was born in NY lol why was he faking an accent
He was born in the US but his family moved to Australia so he grew up there, and that's where his acting career started. I just watched a video where they mentioned that lol
booshiebear101 exactly idiot
Monsta X and it was deminished after 1990, 1991, or 1992
Well fuck. You guys r a bunch of bully’s. assholes.
