I appreciate your explaining your ideas simply. I’ve never considered playing the right hand as octaves - I do that with the left hand often. Our playing styles are similar, so it’s been easy to incorporate your ideas into my hymn playing. Much thanks from Zambia, Africa.
Like you I am a great fan of flats (when I get to four sharps I really have to concentrate). I really enjoy playing at our church and we are looking forward to re-opening after lock-down measures. Our small group is: drums, 2 guitars and me on piano - we are all grandparents. I can also play organ but piano is really my instrument. Really enjoyed this video and has subscribed. Rev Bryan East
Thank you for this video! I'm trying very hard to learn how to improvise - right now I'm stuck playing the SATB notes from the hymnal during church. Awesome!
I like your playing style and your tips. If you have a bass player on the worship team, you may want to minimize playing time in the bass section. But if there's no bass player then what you're playing works nicely.
It is so nice to hear that someone else likes Flats. I learned to transpose from Sharps to Flats at an early age. Much to my piano teachers dismay. I am the Church Pianist and need to learn how to add some umph to my playing. I'm glad I found your channel! Keep up the good work...
I’m searching for ways to change up hymns. I’d like to learn more runs besides just the basic ones. I’d love any ideas to change them up a little. I love the tremolo idea. Thanks!
Pretty. You and I have similar styles. This is going to be really helpful to others, hopefully. I'm always being asked about how to improvise. You explain it very well.
Thank you for you videos. I'm a church pianist,. Just want to ask how do you do prelude songs esp when the songs are in different key? How do you do the transition from one key to another smoothly? thanks.
You play so beautiful! I am 59 yrs old. I took piano lessons at 8 yrs old, but was so shy I did not like someone looking over my shoulder! I took lessons off and on for a couple of years. My parents bought me a piano, so I felt obligated to take lessons. 🤦♀️ I have played off & on in churches for years, but never the way I would like. I hope I can watch your videos and learn to enhance my playing. Thank you!
Thanks for doing these videos. I don’t play out of a hymnal, mostly because I have trouble seeing it and also I’m intermediate and I stopped my training years ago in the last book #5 of the Jr. Hymnal by Bastien. But I have purchased a couple of early intermediate books of southern gospel songs which I am able to play...but they do need some extra sound during those longer notes. I will give this a try. Do you have any tips on octaving? I feel like my fingers just won’t reach. LOL
Hello there.. I am from India. Are you on Facebook/instagram. I would love to learn more about playing hymns. I have been playing keyboard in church for two years (self taught) I play Octave with 5th on my left and simple chord with right(less arpeggios). I sight read only treble clef. I would love to learn the left hand technique for hymns. thanks
I would start by doubling the the soprano note first then when you are comfortable with that add the alto and then the tenor...or you could approach it by just adding the tenor note to the thumb of your right hand and not doubling the soprano note so that you get 3 notes in the right hand...then when you feel comfortable double the soprano (thumb and pinky)
@@beccaskeystopiano6958 love your vids. Can we say if we are doubling the Soprano with octaves and put the Alto and Tenor, this is a Triad with the melody doubled?
Becca, your videos are helping many church musicians. Thanks.
Thanks very much for watching. I am going to make every effort to post more videos on this channel. God bless.
Wow! Like this.
Wow, my favorite song to play as the congregation exits, thank you so very much.
Ive heard of doubling the bass but doubling the sopranos and adding the alto in the middle was an eureka moment for me....thank you.

Yes that’s true
We don’t have a bass player
I was exaggerating the bass a bit
It’s fun to roll it though and change up the verses
Beautiful

Music in our hymnals is written for singers. Musicians need to improvise in order to keep the music from sounding “bookish.”
Very true. Improvisation is the medium to lifting up the voices of people in praise to the Lord.
