I became a big fan of the Impulse label thanks to Coltrane as well as Ashley Kahn’s must-read book, “The House That Trane Built.” Fortunately, I have been able to find many albums easily and build a sizable library. I have a long-term quest to collect every record released on the label. You can find most records for under $10 aside from the big names (everything Coltrane is $20 or more).
Some fantastic shows there Ken , I love collecting Impulse almost as much as Blue Note . I agree on ' Alfie - Sonny Rollins ' as a top album and Crescent could well be my fave Impulse Coltrane recording ( Ole ' is my fave piece ) . I am fairly new to watching your vids but am a big Jazz, Soul , Reggae , 60' s / Mod collector etc and love seeing the shared passion in a lot of you VC guys vids
Great label great sound beautiful laminated covers.............i have a few........love the Szabo / McFarland "Simpatico" one ........also the Gabor psychedelic ones..............Greetings.........
yeah Mr Ken.......... Nice album with a fab cover on the psych anthem Nature Boy............ Thanks Mr Micallef for inspired me to show my hippy Impulses..........have a look if you want to............Blessings............
Personally, my favourite jazz label ! Also the packaging, the gatefold are marvellous! you have a great collection! If you ever want to sell some, hit me up! I am a young collector form Slovenia, have some Gabor Szabo, Chico Hamilton, Ahmad Jamal, trane... best, august
Great Video Ken..I need to do more investigation on Impulse..not many in my collection..I used to have Alfie on cd..need to revisit that album, I only remember the main track. Thanks for the recommendations!
Thank you Audiophiliac! Guys, Steve is the most famous audio man on the web, bar none and with good reason. Smart as a whip and speaks from experience. Salute!
Peter Max designed this album cover he was in my class at SVA but he was already famous I think he was there so he wouldn't be drafted he had his own cereal company he designed the boxes it was delicious it tasted like Familia but costs less he brought Swami Satchidanda over here for meditation and yoga lessons ua-cam.com/video/QJekN_fCqPE/v-deo.html
Actually it was Creed Taylor of CTI records who founded Impulse Records. He signed Coltrane to the label. However his stint at Impulse Records was very short.
Great video 1 im pretty sure Hartman did two solo records for Impulse. some of my favorite Impulse records however never come up in VC videos, but these are the records from Gabor Szabo and Chico Hamilton ( most of which also feature Szabo) I dont know why but they seem to be overlooked, i mean of course John C is the Don and his recordings are undoubtedly the most Important ones on Impulse but i absoloutely love Chico and Gabor as well. And also the Yusef Lateef records seem to be a bit overlooked as well..
You know what? I think the success of Blue Note's Tone Poet series is gonna light a fire under the asses of all these other jazz labels. Once it happens once, there's a bandwagon to jump on. I expect Impulse! to follow suit soon, and Columbia Jazz.
very informative. thanks ken. i agree with you about mccoys playing before coltrane, more delicate and lyrical. impulse was certainly an important label!
Ken Micallef Jazz Vinyl Audiophile thanks for the reply. I found a mono on eBay but it distorts at dynamic peaks - groove wear? Not sure why. I’ve cleaned it on a vacuum machine. Will keep looking.
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 Ravi Coltrane - Mad 6; Jack DeJohnette/Ravi Coltrane/Matt Garrison - In Movement; store.acousticsounds.com/index.cfm?get=results&searchtext=ravi+coltrane. I enjoy the reviews, was just wondering why we don't hear more about him. That also includes Blue Mitchell who doesn't seem to get the respect he deserves (sorry we're getting off the topic of Impulse).
I dont understand why in none of the Impulse records videos i have seen from VC on YT i have never seen anyone talk about Gabor Szabo and only once have i seen someone speaking about Yusef Lateef. for me they are the best on Impulse along with John and Alice Coltrane
Out of afternoon by Roy Haynes is extremely hard to come by an original. Roy Haynes Cymbalism is almost impossible. I have seen it twice in 10 years and missed my opportunity to get an original and haven’t seen an original since. Cymbalism has been reissued, but the re issue isn’t something you will just find lying around in any store, it’s usually an Ebay find. Also Pharoah Sanders early stuff was killer.
I have a John Coltrane A love supreme 1965 1st pressing the jacket is in mint condition like it was just made yesterday Impulse did a fantastic job.
LUCILLE CHILDS That’s Awesome!
Hi
I have finally able to get all the one you talk. All from Japan.
Thank you so much !!
I've learned so much from you Ken. Thank You!!!
Great video on Impulse!
Listening to Heavy Sounds on a second youtube window as I pause your video. It sounds great. Gotta get one!
I love the 'Rollins on Impulse' album in the background, his tone is gold..

I Love Crescent! It’s a JAZZ Masterpiece 🎷
Ran into a VG + Sonny Stitt Impulse today. It went home with me.

Alice Coltrane stuff at least some of it is very hard to come buy. They are coming out with more reissues.

Thank you for that correction, sir. I wondered about that statement as I was making it!

Thanks, Alan. is your experience similar as far as finding Impulse! LPs in the wild, often beat?
Ken Micallef Jazz Vinyl Lover they certainly are harder to find. even the second pressing black labels are going for $30 or $40 dollars.
Would you recommend mono, stereo or “either is good” for Shelley Manne 2-3-4? It was released in 1962 I believe.
Such a great record. either is great, but I lean mono iF you can find it! And that's a big if
