Thank you for your analysis. I've been trying to figure out why Monty's fights are so rewatchable, while some action films are dull. I think there is an element of an outstyling contest - it is just not about destroying the opponent, but doing it in the way thats stylish and creative as possible. Monty studied dance and I think the concept of dance battles was very applicable to his fight animation aesthetic.
This analysis is so good and insightful! It's so obvious that you have studied Monty's style extremely well! Know I need to rewatch my own lightsaber duels and see if I can find any semblance of Monty's formula. I'm pretty sure that the block and dodge exchanges were definitely used and I know the tag-in was used a few times too. My Clone Wars duels (being animated) are especially relevant to this video!

I love your presentation. I'll probably never learn to animate (and if I do by the grace of God, it'll be years from now) but I like to imagine fights in my head, so thinking about the stages of a fight and how the involved characters interface with the environment and people around them helps figure out what their style is.

So something I haven't seen you talk about much is how much work Monty's crazy spinning camera does all on its own, and I actually think Dead Fantasy 1 is a perfect example of this. If you play the original DF1 next to the remake by UIYAHAN (or as much of it that exists, at least), it's immediately apparent how much heavy lifting Monty's camerawork was doing when compared to UIYAHAN's much more modern, stable camera. I think for anyone looking to recreate or build on Monty's style is doing themselves a serious disservice if they treat the camera like just another moving viewpoint.
Absolutely. Unfortunately I had recorded a section where I talk about camera angles more in depth but I had to cut it for time. Hopefully I'll be able to cover it sometimes down the line in another video.
I actually think this is the crazy camera at work; if you play the two side-by-side, with a few exceptions like Yuna's initial run, most of the animations line up frame for frame, even the ones that are actually mistakes in both versions! And at least one shot in Monty's version has the camera sweep from left to right, which helps bend the "keep characters on the same side" rule Cake Station pointed out (this is called the 180 rule in animation). The UIYAHAN version is more static, which means it actually breaks this rule at that timestamp, whereas Monty's neatly sidestepped it.
The animation was short, sweet and to the point showing the formula you spoke about. I'm so glad I came across these videos because I have always wondered how Monty did it and I knew it was more than just rythm.

I really don't think Monty had a plan in mind when he created these, stuff like this just flow out of your mind. It's cool that you are trying to break it down to find out why he basically did it better than anyone else in the world, but a large portion of the answer would be "his creative thinking" combined with the drive to actually finish the job. what are your thoughts on rwby season 6 fights (if you’ve even watched it)? i’m no animator, but i see some improvement. still not monty level fight scenes, but it’s getting better??¿
Apparently, they used some of Monty or Shane's old Adam vs Yang animation on ep. 11. But other than that fight, the fights were a slight improvement over volume 5.
I’m telling you guys Giorno’s theme is one of the best songs to put over a fight. I did it when I played a game of smash and it felt amazing especially if you’re in sync
Hi! So I’m a big fan of Dead fantasy. Actually, big fan might be an understatement as that series directly changed my life trajectory and brain chemistry forever. It’s a late start and I want pay homage to Monty and the series by doing something of my own. I want to get a degree but I’ve decided to try and learn as much as I can on my own. Where would I begin? What software would you recommend for an aspiring fighting animator such as myself? I have a few books on animation but they’re mostly 2D tips. I’m interested in both but I know 3D is where I want to start. Could you point me in the right direction?
Hi there! Usually I recommend Source Filmmaker, a free program you can download on steam, because it has thousands of free and ready to animate models that you can practice with. The interface is also rather simple and easy on beginners. Just make sure you watch Valve's official tutorials and not the user made ones. If you can get good at animating in SFM, those abilities will transfer into whatever program you use next like what I use now which is Blender. In terms of resources for learning 3D animation, there are plenty of tutorials on how to start animating but in terms of the specialized work that Monty Oum was doing, I'm the only channel on UA-cam with any content tailored to that. So if that's what you want to do, the best place to start is with my tutorial series and my animation analysis series!
Guys, after spending seasons 4-6 of RWBY in a Stockholm syndrome in which I don't even know why I watched it, it may be curiosity about the lore, it may be literally clinical boredom, I realized Monty was a cheap piece of... First, constantly living in anticipation, using spoilers and teasers, hints about the lore, instead of actual writing (if I were to judge from comments on the videos and Wikia pages) to compensate for not knowing how to write. Second, using 3D animation to make 2D, anime-like pictures, it makes animating so easy that even I could do it. With anime style it's so easy to draw characters that can be as ugly as you want them, and 3D eliminates the need to draw frames, to actually animate. With these two tricks Monty made it infinitely easy to Roostercock to make RWBY, and now with him out of the formula, they were free to turn it into the disgusting telenovela it is now.
Let's recap season 6. Ozpin the Immortal, chosen by the Gods themselves to bring humanity to its former glory and fight the greatest evil (Salem), has become a crybaby who runs away when questioned. I can bet money that Ozpin isn't voiced by McCormick, as credited in season 6. Qrow, world's best huntsman, Ozpin's right hand, became a drunkard whom Ruby drags around like a drunkard man's wife. Calavera, the legendary Reaper, the inspiration for the very protagonist and her uncle, is a depressed old lady who counts herself as a failure and wants to kill herself. Finally, Adam, the strongest Faunus, is a heartbroken crybaby who cries for his love for Blake, who never wanted him, forgetting his actual goal, and his Moonslice that cuts Huntspersons and spiderbots in half barely scratches Yang and Blake after MULTIPLE uses.
Yep. It's a shame, but it's safe to say that Miles, Kerry and the rest of the RT crew aren't planning on changing their methods anytime soon. I saw some interview videos before Volume 6 started airing, and the writers are extremely proud of what they came up, despite the fact that some of their ideas fell flat (aside from a few good fight scenes, like Neo vs Cinder, and Yang vs Adam). And on a side note, one of the reasons why the Yang vs Adam fight looked so good was because RT actually used some of Monty's old prototype animation (which was originally meant to be used in Volume 3, according to Shane's letter).
@@Mark-fc7tu have you guys seen how Adam died? It's nothing short of two jealous wives stabbing him because he cheated on both of them. I would call this the worst moment in RWBY so far.
@@derekdjay Yes, I saw the episode. It's too bad that RT killed Adam off just to ship Blake and Yang, but at least the Yang vs Adam fight was decent. I don't know if we can expect anything better from Miles, Kerry, and the animators at this point.
If Adam only didn't became a psycho, ex boyfriend crybaby, after Monty's passing... He was like the first person in the 4 trailers that I liked instantly, from his badass fighting style and personality. Crwby just hated him for some reason
Out of curiosity, do these ideas also work with writing? I much prefer writing over animation but i get the feeling that the flow can also go hand in hand with writing.
I was wondering what program do you use and how long does it take to render a character in 3d? I usually study 2d but Monty is literally what brought me to 3d
This will be interesting. I'm not sure if i asked you this but what do you value the most in a fight? You always cover the technical sides but is that really where a fight has its value to you?
I just think that above everything else, I just love fight scenes. They're a lot of fun and I'm in constant hope that I can keep making crazy animations that hopefully make a lot of people happy. I haven't really been able to find a more rational explanation. I just want to keep making unexpected things.
@@CakeStation Cool. I've heard of adding emotional elements to a fight as well. Like a character being more erratic so it's easier to keep up with their exchange before getting comboed for being so rash. When they calm down the exchange could be more even and with the environment the tides can turn. I just didn't know what elements were your favorite.
@@CodeTetsu Absolutely, I think it's pretty important to have an idea of your characters individual emotions during a fight scene. It keeps things consistent and on top of it, what's the point in a character nobody relates to? You gotta like them first before they get into trouble.
It would be nice to put all of that to practice but 1- I don't know how or what software to animate and 2- Don't know where to get rigs to animate... I have plenty of fighting scenes that i wanted to do but 0 knowledge of where to start.
Start with Source Filmmaker. It's free and the steam workshop for it has hundreds of free rigs. It's been my go to for fast and easy animation since 2012.
In my opinion, Source Filmmaker is the best program to start with if you want to learn 3D animation. The steam workshop has hundreds of free, rigged models and environments. It's like plug and play animation.

Congrats on being the first of anybody to mention the Road series! I've been studying it recently and it's a real eye opener. It really shows Monty's original unabridged inspirations coming through in the animation. Maybe sometime I'll make a video about Road.
You guys agree that RWBY will end in season 7? With so many money-bringing series Roostercock have, they have no reason to continue it. The disastrous quality of season 6 is proof of that. Here's how I think it'll go: Cinder and Neo will come to kill Ruby, they'll get killed and Calavera will become the Autumn maiden. Ruby and Summer Rose will be revealed as the Winter and Summer maidens. Summer will be proved to be alive. Jaune's original sword is the Vacuo relic and Pyrrrha's crown is the Vale relic which was smithed into his weapon. Ozpin said he made the Vale relic trickier to find, and Ironwood is one of his right hands, maybe he did the same with the Atlas relic. Whitley gets a change of mind, takes over Schnee Dust, changes it for the better and throws Jaq off the Schnee castle. I think Jaq has a scepter but I'm not sure, if he has then this is the Atlas relic and getting it will be no problem. Finally, with all relics at hand, Ozpin summons the God brothers, they deem humanity and Faunality worthy and they give back their magic. The gods will make Salem mortal again and she'll give up on controlling humanity and stay content with her relationship with Ozpin. (salem+oscar = salescar). And everybody lives happy. And they will finally stop saying "created by Monty" at the end of the intros. Not like they gave a fuck about him anyway. Or, they'll turn it into a full telenovela and broadcast it on TV alongside Saath Nibhana Saathiya and Suleyman the magnificent and those Latin American telenovelas.
@@CakeStation Haha, well- there's a character in my game that I think you'd fit perfectly. @@juliantaimanao3445 If you want to make your own models, I'd recommend Blender. The learning curve is a tad higher but if you want that creative freedom, it's the best option.
@@CakeStation thank you
>Get to animating bucko!
Me, not having animation software: :/
Source Filmmaker is free and good for beginners!
@@CakeStation I tried that but it barely functioned on my laptop. I gotta fix that problem first I suppose. Thx
This is the 2nd video you explain how to animate a fight
I wonder why no one ever uses Road 3. It was is start using 3d as a means.
Here's how I think it'll go:
Cinder and Neo will come to kill Ruby, they'll get killed and Calavera will become the Autumn maiden.
Soo.... Montyims? P.S. Have you ever considered voice acting, Cake?
I'd love to do it but I'm not sure what I'd be useful for. All the voices I can do either sound like children, girls or high pitched italian mobsters.
@@CakeStation Haha, well- there's a character in my game that I think you'd fit perfectly. She's a hammerhead shark girl that is the best and hardest working worker at a factory that makes magnetic platforms. The quality of the results of her hard work is juxtaposed to her friendly and casual way of talking.
Man eye h8 the video premier system. Just let me watch the video god dang it!!!
Hyyyype
still doing good. i would animate but i only know graphic art. lol.
Hey, you're already half way to being an animator if you know how to draw. And it's never too late to start!
@@CakeStation thanks. and as a fellow Rwby fan check out what I already drawn if it's not too much trouble.

Please apply and work somewhere as an animator (and ofc work on some action fantasy project like RWBY) so I can actually watch and enjoy your talent. Wasted potential right there. Time for you to shine
