I would say gloves are next after a helmet. Your hands are often the first thing to hit the ground when you crash. You need to protect your fingers and palms.
Been riding over 20 years without gloves. Zero issues. Gloves wont make much of a difference if you crash hard enough.

@@believe8263 some does actually. i only wear them beacause i sweat a lot, it's not comrtable, even the thinest one ( which doesn't protect you when you crash)
@@kermitleninja7310 They actually do protect you, that's why riders wear them. They are not going to stop all injuries but your skin is far more protected in gloves from abrasions than without.
@@believe8263 I understand gloves are useful, Im not saying barehand is *better*. I just dont consider gloves essential or necessary. Definitely need the right grips to excel bare hand though, and it helps to have big hands.
Just started riding with a pair of Freeriders. It was insane how much an improvement having real MTB shoes was - My feet no longer cramp up, I feel so much more stable, and stronger on the climbs

Currently recovering from a knee injury and riding in an ACL brace, and being able to bail/roll off without an extra step is a good feeling for this season!
Ant Altieri I’ve gone from clips to free riders and flats. Tbh they are so good I hardly notice the difference!
MTB can be an expensive sport to get into..but my god does it put a smile on your face with every purchase you make!
As a standard I always try to get quality over value, tend to find products last longer, some even come with long guarantees!
I personally feel like gloves is one of the most important, just to avoid ruining your day over something silly. You could have a small crash and you're just fine, but your day is done if you have a pebble embedded in your palm and you can't grip the bars
I still ride without Gloves whenever possible...like Neil i tend to fall on my face.
You need to toughen up your hands. Should have enough callusing to protect against pebbles. Been riding over 20 years without gloves, zero issues.
@@qqslp Eh. Doesn't matter how calloused your hands are. A sharp enough object and hard enough impact will more than likely pierce your hands. No shame in wearing gloves.
@@zakh6016 Not to mention shock absorption. If you don't want to die from elbow / shoulder pain in your 50's, wear gloves. They won't prevent it, no, but they will surely ease the effect.
For me it depends on the ride. I’m usually gloved 50% of the time, mostly for longer or gnarlier rides. If it’s raining or a short ride, I prefer the feel of bare hands.
Not gonna lie... I’ve actually forgotten my bike back home a couple times when I’m already half way towards the trail head. Guess I was just too excited to ride lol

In terms of riding glasses I use clear safety glasses (DeWalt) because I get them from work for free! They don't look much different from riding glasses and you know they are gonna stop almost anything from flying into your eyes 👍

It's a great tip to get started on the cheap, the only thing is they aren't typically compatible with interchangeable lenses, so you end up buying a whole new pair when you scratch them up.
I'm full face only on most trails. My wife had an accident at a local bike park and even with a MIPS helmet she still ended up with a concussion. Love that you started with the most important item. Ride safely!

Yup. Arguably safer than most riding glasses as they are actual safety specs (and they look fine). I’ve been riding for years and I use them.
I do also have a pair of riding specific glasses but haven’t used them for ages as the clear lenses of the safety specs are better for the mixed conditions I ride in in the UK.
I’m still using the pair I picked up in Squamish from a hardware store when I rented a bike and needed some glasses. I wasn’t about to spend out on a ‘proper’ pair of riding glasses.
Been using safety glasses for years. Have a preference for Bollé. Not so expensive and not such a loss should you lose or damage them.
just got my first proper trail bike and it's a little daunting how much stuff you need and how expensive it all is
You don't need it all right away. Outside of your helmet it's all stuff you can get over time as your skills improve and you start taking on more higher risk trails. Once you feel comfortable taking on Reds is when you need to consider knee/elbow pads for example. Shoe's I'd recommend, just cause they are good and provide a better experience, but everything else is fairly optional to start.
I cannot understate the importance of MTB shoes. I was a bit scared inventing in them as I was afraid they were not comfy for walking or to drive to the bike park. This is absolutely not the case, the MTB shoes are actually very very comfortable and you can walk all day with them when you have to hike the bike. The stiff sole is really helping the feet and avoid the pain due to constantly pressing on the pedals. Mine even have a reinforced tip. Ever made a rock fly hard towards your cranks / chainring? Well I had a big one not long ago hitting my foot at speed on a rocky down hill section. I barely felt it, but with normal shoes that would have been a quite painful hit. Totally worth the investment
The reinforced tip is more for strikes than flying debris, but yeah they are a good safety feature since you aren't gonna be cycling with a broken toe, and the long walk back home/to the car park won't be any fun either!

Happened to me with my gloves, i really can't stand being without them. Where i live it's full of sketchy bushes and you get cuts on your hands and arms frequently

Re: goretex... I have to agree & disagree. I highly recommend washing goretex, but make sure you use a tech wash and not regular detergent... And if you want it to have the water beading effect you will need to use the dwr spray or wash-in.
Super important to wash your GTX every now and then to keep it breathable and help it last longer.
REI just posted a video on this and interviewed gortex experts. The key is to put the garment in the dryer after washing it as the heat helps rejuvenate the material.
Agreed - I work for an outdoor clothing company and the recommendation is to wash and use a tech wash. Not washing will make the jacket perform less well because your sweat and body oils will clog up the Gore Tex membrane, making the jacket less breathable. Washing removes the DWR, which is the coating that makes the water bead up, and when removed the outer fabric will become damp; this makes it appear like the jacket is leaking but it isn’t because it’s the membrane that keeps you dry, not the DWR. So washing in fact keeps you drier by allowing your vaporized sweat pass through the membrane more easily despite the appearance to the contrary due to the lack of DWR

Personally I use flat MTB pedals from NSbikes ( AERIAL ) in combination with some Salomon Speed cross 5 shoes in the winter ( Belgian weather is much like UK weather I guess ). The shoes are made for trail running, but offer some excellent grip when you're in the mud going up a hill by foot. Despite the big rubber knobbies on the sole, thanks to the concave shape from the pedals, they do have sufficient grip on these pedals. Nothing worse than climbing a slippery hill, then find yourself having to continue by foot, not daring to move because you have flat sole MTB shoes :)
Gortex restores its water shedding ability by putting it in the dryer for 15 min on medium heat. Try it.

GORE-TEX actually advise to wash their fabrics on a warm wash (not hot) with a non-bio liquid detergent in order to re-activate the waterproofing element that they teat the fabric with.
To anyone who sweats profusely from their forehead like me: Also bring a thin headband for under your helmet. It does wonders.

I have both a trail and enduro bike and got a MET parachute helmet, best of both worlds.
Highly recommend a full face helmet for steeper or new trails. Dedicated shoes help a lot too. Glasses are a great idea too.
REI just posted a video about why and how you should wash and dry gortex jackets. Washing like normal clothes and then drying in the dryer on medium heat for 20 minutes actually rejuvenates the material. Not cleaning them allows the cloth to become clogged and it loses the water shedding capabilities.

i would also say a good pair of water-resistant/ waterproof are essential for wet muddy days, since it keeps your feet warmer and dryer for far longer
My problem is remembering all of my gear. I also get a little lazy sometimes with getting all of my stuff together and putting it on. I guess that's why some people like us, we are human haha. Thanks for the video.
I made like a small box with compartments for everything, that way you can see everything
Get a food shopping divider bag, normally have 3 compartments. shoes in one, helmet and protection in the other, spares and other layers you'll put on when there in the 3rd

Reference the GoreTex, it's the way the material is created which makes it waterproof - no chemical coatings as such.
As long as you wear it before you next go out in the rain it'll work fine.

Really depends on type of riding you'll be doing and if you want to push your limits. Realistically best to wear whatever will protect you in the types of falls you may have. Nothing worse than having an injury which some protection/gear may have prevented. We all want to ride as much as we can!!

You should definitely wash Goretex, use something like Nikwax Tech wash then the Tx direct wash-in after. I don’t work for any of these companies, just years of experience with the kit!
I wear a open or full face helmet, depends on the track, gloves, pads, goggles and a pair of Vans

Well done for admitting straightaway that all you really NEED is a helmet and everything else is personal preference.
For me I often feel a large insect, stone chip or tree branch smash into my glasses lenses and thank God I put them on. Gloves, water, multi-tool, quick links, phone, wallet, co2, spare tube, cable ties, weather-appropriate clothing and nothing else.

Have you thought about contacting Goretex about how to care for their products? . They recommend placing the jacket in the dryer on medium heat for 20 min after washing to reactivate the goretex fibers.

@@jameskatz3747 if you say look cooler that’s subjective. If you are saying they are cooler heat wise then that is objective. Motocross riders used to rise open face. Have you seen a motocross rider ride open face because it’s cooler? Protection evolves. Helmet manufacturers are making lighter more ventilated full face helmets every season. Why is racing more dangerous? One small mistake on a mellow trail and face hitting rock is face hitting rock. That’s cool.
@@charlie9ine i understand what your saying as i have both and open face and full face but in my opinion open look cooler as in look better and are better in general but full face is very beneficial if you are racing and doing big stuff, i wear an open face on 20 foot gaps, fractured my shoulder the other day and hit my head but i was completely fine, except for my shoulder so the standard of these things are incredible so it's definetly worth investing in having both
@@jameskatz3747 Full face helmets for life. Look at bike fails with open faced helmets. There’s some narly videos out there. Why take the chance when you’re riding through rough terrain and not the streets? Are open faced helmets more comfortable? Yeah I’d say so. But they’re not anywhere near at protective as a full face.
Wash your waterproof gear! By not washing it you're allowing debri and oils to breakdown the fabric. The DWR treatment he is speaking of will rubber off after several uses anyway so not washing only breaks down the fabric. Use technical fabric specific detergents and spray on DWR to retreat the material afterwards. Not too mention the fabric is waterproof even without the dwr.
I must say...I have never heard of that saying about helmets, Neil...but advice is well taken 😇

I wear trail running shoes when I ride. They give so much grip it sometimes feels like I’m clipped in.
I once made a 100km ride without padded pants. Couldn’t feel anything down there for a week. I thought its over, all what matters ended. Life is over. But im back !!!
On the subject of protection, where are all the shin guards? It seems you can cover any part except the bit that gets slammed by a slipped pedal.
Now a billion dollar question, most of us ride such light flat trails that our biggest concern of them all is the common nettle stings. How do we tackle these?

You've no idea how easy it is to break an ankle, until you've broken one. One wrong fall under a wrong angle and crack, out of commission for 6 months, with plates in your leg likely for the rest of your life.
After a helmet I'd say some ankle braces are a must.
You actually want to wash gore-tex with a specific detergent. Not washing it, dirt and oils will plug up the pores and make it less breathable.
Helmet, gloves, shoes, chamois = The basics. After that jersey, sunglasses, knee/shin pads. After that it’s getting excessive unless you’re riding DH.

Hi just curious why most mountain bikers wear tshirts and shorts when riding while road bike users is always using those neat fitted cycling clothes? Rarely see mtb riders on the road wearing cycling jerseys. I am saving money to buy an mtb and I am confused with which types of clothing look I should wear. I really find the fitted cycling jersey look really clean and nice on the road but I dont want to look different on mtb users.
I know its rare, but I've seen a cheap helmet fail. A friend had a bad fall from an awkward landing, and his helmet literally cracked in 2. He was unconscious for a scary amount of time. I think Mips should be a minimum, as it spreads the force of an impact

I rode for years wearing Vans, as that’s what I had. Yes, riding specific shoes are better, but not necessary. I still do casual rides in whatever footwear I happen to have on.
Budget flat shoes? Something that fits and that has a bit of stiffness to the sole, an acceptable level of grip on your pedals and preferably something that doesn’t act as a sponge (I’m looking at you 1st and 2nd gen Five Tens).

The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of UA-cam. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!
