    The tabs on the rulebook is genius! I want to see that in other games.

  • @JoachimErdtman

    The new tabbed rulebook looks brilliant! That should become an industry standard, if with somewhat better paperstock. The new Shortage rule with the dice resolution would kill the game for me. I love being sneaky with it to pick up treasures. Although to be fair, anyone could simply choose to play with the old Shortage rules in the new version of the game.

      I like the sounds of the new shortage rule better personally, because it prevents abuse. But I’ve only played the old way.

  • @jherrenor

    The old version looks better still, even with its annoying fold out rulebook. The insert it more compact with no unnecessary free space. It is also the same size as the Crew expansion. Really don't like the optional new rule. Adding unpredictability to previously somewhat strategic game is not a good idea.

      I disagree but ok

      @Lingvar 2 роки тому +2

      in old version you still have that same unnecessary free space, but it is actually a wasted space there, because it is part of the plastic insert with Jamaica logo on it, thus making it useless. At least in new version you can put something there if need be. More compact doesn't always mean rational. As for the expansion, I bet after they reprint it, it will match the size of the main game box.

      You can still play original Jamaica with the new one. Just ignore that new rule and that's it.
      Although, I must say that I find the dice having different sized numbers annoying XD.

      I have the newer version & expansion and that unnecessary space holds the expansion perfectly. I'd guess that it was meant for it.

    Also, regarding the shortage rule, there's nothing in the new edition forcing the players to play with the new rule. So it doesn't matter to 'liking the new version'.

    Can I just buy the new rule book? Nothing else changed enough for me to buy the new version, other than the box sitting on the shelf a little more cohesively, and I think I prefer the old shortage rule (more strategery), but that rule book is niiiiiicce.

    The new shortage rule seems like it would benefit new players and hinder experienced players. Jamaica is one of my go-to games for introducing to non-gamers, so the new rule sounds like it would work well for the groups with which I would play Jamaica.

    I'm glad to see not enough has changed for me fork out the cash for the new edition. The tabs on the new rulebook is an amazing idea that I hope more games will use. I don't think I ever unfolded the old rule book once. I watched the rules online I think with Zee. Simple game. The expansion however, I did open that rulebook many times.

    I haven't played with it, obviously, but I hate that new shortage rule as described. I don't see how it's an improvement at all. Fortunately, it's easily ignored, but I'm guessing the old rule isn't even mentioned in the new rulebook (love the tabs!) as a variant.

  • @searose6192

    I don't like the new shortage rule. One of the funnest things in Jamaica is those moves where you carefully plan out to move enough spaces that you end up moving back and scooping up treasure you would have otherwise missed.

  • @lucduchien
    @lucduchien 2 роки тому

    With either version, you could do a hybrid of the rules. If you can't pay, roll the combat die, if you get a BANG, don't move back. If not, follow the old rules.

    Finally, il like the old version of this specific rule better. It’s one on my favorite racing games because there are strong luck mitigants in place in the game and I like to know where I end up up front. It’s just better for planning.

    The new shortage rule should have been, don't pay anything yet, but go back to the next space you can pay and then pay the cost.
    So following your example, if you had 2 food, you would move back one space from where you landed rather than go back to the pirate lair.

      The new box size is better for storage. It's more in line with contemporary game box sizes so it's easier to group with others. The old one doesn't store sideways and it's a weird shape so it requires a little special care imo.

    Thanks to Zee for showing this and making everything plain in short time :)
    I just can't understand why both the old and new rules are so weird and nonthematic. If I can't afford staying somewhere I just go back to a place I can and then pay. Simpler and less random. Why pay as much as I can and then go back - was always a mistery to me and the new system is even a stranger concept. Really. If anyone reads this and is interested in experimenting I highly recommend using a normal D6 for combat and getting rid of the "sabre" artifact. Both of these things are anti strategic and break the game by changing it into a luck fest. My opinion of course. Also one person cannot attack or be attacked more than once each turn. Speeds up the game dramatically whith more players.

    People really exaggerate when it comes to the rulebook of Jamaica. "One of the most hated rulebooks"?!?!?!?! really Zee? The most annoying thing about Jamaica is the cards that are not treasures and once you get them you have to show them to the other players. That's it! Jamaica is a super easy and light game and once you read the rulebook you don't have to open the rulebook-map again only to flex about how awesome it looks and because the designers weren't smart enough to understand that you must put something to remind the players about these cards. Zee didn't say anything about that so I guess they are not the brightness! When it comes to the new shortage rule it's terrible. And it's there because of the streamline plague that is spreading everywhere. 7 wonders got a streamlined version for dummies now Jamaica what's next? Uno? If you find the older version that I suggest you get that one.

    • @Steve-L
      @Steve-L 2 роки тому

      Remember Zee and many others play hundreds if not thousands of games, and remembering every rule, even for a simple game is not likely. Thus they use the rule book more often.

      @georgepap8512 2 роки тому

      @@Steve-L Again you open the rulebook once read the rules and then you don't have to do it any other time except those annoying cards. And that's because the designers didn't think about the importance of giving player aids

    • @atomiccritter6492
      @atomiccritter6492 2 роки тому

      I think the new shortage rule is there to stop players gaming too much. Typically modern gamers seem to hate the randomness of dice in games for some weird reason. I would argue that Jamaica is NOT an easy game to teach...oh its certainly not massively complicated but the day and night moves seems a little redundant to me. Streamlining is good! Gamers seem to think they are the ONLY people playing games and forget that new players are often overwhelmed by games with too many options. Streamlining is almost essential to broaden a games appeal

    • @georgepap8512
      @georgepap8512 2 роки тому

      @@atomiccritter6492 If my 6 years old sister can understand and play Jamaica without any problems then I believe that new players will be fine. Jamaica is an easy game so if you find it hard to teach it then maybe you should read the rulebook more , practice the way you are teaching the game or let someone else do it. Poor teaching skills is more often the reason why new people are struggling and not the game. People usually assume that just because they know the rules or they have played the game tons of times or the game is simple that teaching will be a piece of cake but they are wrong. Unless you practice before then you will probably make the life of the others a lot harder.
      Lastly what people need to understand is that not knowing every strategy about a game before you start is OK. Playing one round to understand how the game works is ok. Rulebooks giving hints about strategies to new players is OK. Knowing everything because the game is so streamlined that is no fun anymore is not OK.
      I don't know what games did you played when you got into the hobby but for me it was Pandemic, Ticket to Ride, The resistance Avalon, Lost cities and Splendor. Old games that have been out forever and if they were good enough and easy for me and for so many before me then there are going to be good for the people after. Lastly the bullshit "is good for the hobby" is a great marketing tool for hasbro in order to justify having 100s different versions of monopoly, for asmodee selling you 50 different versions of Pandemic or Azul or 7 wonders but it has nothing to do with the hobby and 100% to do with there pockets and don't how they have convenienced so many people otherwise.
