Kei Kurono 100% agree. If this "Dark Universe" thing is supposed to revive all of the classic Universal horror/monster movie characters from the 30's, 40's and 50's then it should remember what made them great and enjoyable to begin with. Their HORROR movies, not action movies. Adventure should, and did especially in latter entries, play a big part in it, but the gothic atmosphere and chills are what should be front and center. That's what disappointed me most about all the trailers and promos for this movie, where's the fog? The dark noir-ish shadows? What the classic movies lack in genuine scares they more than made up for in gothic look and mood. They didn't have blood and jump scares but they did have atmosphere in spades and I hope the future films in this franchise remember that. But somehow I doubt they will.
Sanna Except the fact that it's been whitewashed! Yes my inner SJW is coming out! It's 2017, and there's still no ancient black people in the mummy franchise! 👎🤦♂️
It's a shame about the female lead because Evelyn was such a great character in the first two Fraser movies. She wasn't a fighter (at least not in the first one) but she was smart, resourceful and hilarious. Now I want to go watch those again...
I don't get why movies still insist on the "useless female sidekick" and "damsel in distress" tropes. If a female character adds nothing to the plot, then why not remove her? Is it because they don't want Tom Cruise to look 'gay' if he only has a male sidekick following him around? It's sad that it's almost 20 years since the 1999 movie came out, yet we are STILL getting useless damsel in distress characters in movies. In the 1999 movie, Evie was just as important to the plot as Rick was. Rick knew the way to Hamunaptra and was skilled with weapons, while Evie could read ancient Egyptian and perform curses (e.g. if she hadn't stripped Imhotep of his immortality, they couldn't have defeated him). They were both useful and without each other, neither would have survived against Imhotep. Hell, even when Evie was being held captive by Imhotep, she was still able to help her brother fight the mummified priests with her knowledge of Egyptian. She wasn't just tied up and screaming uselessly.
Yeah but in the 1999 version Evie was the leading character and Rick was the support get me from point A to point B and be badass character kinda like Jack Sparrow in the first pirates. But here Tom Cruise is the lead and the female character is there because we can't have movie with no female character on the good side I guess.Dunno why Chris thinks she's a "female lead" she was barely a support character without her the plot wouldn't have been any different to be honest. The movie would've been so much better if she wasn't there at all so we can have more scenes with the Mummy because I liked her character and was really interested in her but she took back seat to the Tom Cruise love interest.I personally liked the movie but I see all the flaws it has.Btw this is not even a remake it's in the same univers as 1999 version so we still have all those characters but lets be honest even that movie had a lot of problems with it but not gonna like the last third going balls to the wall cheesy action adventure was way better the the last third of this one.
I hope he does. The Mummy 1999 imo is the best adventure film after Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Mummy Returns was good, but wasn't on par with the first The Mummy Dragon Emperor was a disaster on every level. That one deserves a hilariocity review.
You know whats funny... The Brendam Fraser remake was made in 1999, and it is more balanced than this one. Both male and female leads are well-written, have flaws and qualities.

Of course, because you are fervent believer in progress. The teleological assumption of history as a narrative with a goal in the horizon. Every past culture and its metanarrative was just an outdated and wrong understanding of the world, luckily it happens only now we have the correct assumption. Of course, that which you consider better was in, say, the middle ages, a complete stupidity. I happen to have an ideology myself and it says: Fuck you!
Oh by the way, if that 1999 movie was so great why in your convoluted logic didn't have a strong female character, one with no-muscled body but capable of beating down hundreds of enemies (religious enemies)? Why it didn't have a-genders?
I don't mind a female character being weak and pathetic if that's what her character is. But when you purposely put across that your female character is smart and strong yet she's still the damsel, then that's a problem. Sweet Dee from It's always sunny in Philadelphia is the perfect example of a female character written to be horrible and pathetic, and it works on every level.
I hated that chick in this film i was asking most of the film why isn't she dead yet, and when she finally died i was beyond happy..... Until they brought her back to life. Are you freaking kidding me smt.
I could tell from how forgettable the female love interest was in the trailer, she would be bland as hell. She looks like a random cute blonde they pulled off the street to be eye candy for Tom Cruise.

Brendan Frasier's Mummy wasn't the real Mummy. It was a comedy knockoff of the original. It was OK, but I wish they would do the original movie justice. It wouldn't even require a huge budget or tons of special effects.

Brendan Fraser's 1999 *Mummy* will always be my personal favorite. I saw parts of the classic films as a kid, then revisited some later. Fraser's version just had everything I'd want from the experience: action, suspense, humor, Egyptian culture, mystery, scares, sword-fighting, desert racing, tombs, traps, well-done practical effects, likable characters, etc. Although, if Sofia Boutella had replaced Imhotep (pretty bland performance imo), perhaps flipping the dynamic into her trying to resurrect a dead boyfriend, that would've made it much better villain-wise to me. Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) is not the first female mummy in the Universal Monsters franchise. Before her are: The Mummy (1932), Imhotep (Boris Karloff) searched across millennia for his mummified lover, Ankhesenamun (Zita Johann), who had been reincarnated as Helen Grosvenor. The Mummy's Hand (1940), Kharis (Tom Tyler) had hoped to resurrect his beloved, the mummified Princess Ananka (Zita Johann, archive footage). Before he could, however, he was caught, and for his unholy transgression Kharis was cursed to be an undead mummy forever. The Mummy's Tomb (1942), although Ananka was absent in this film she did appear in The Mummy's Ghost (1944), reincarnated as Amina Monsouri (Ramsay Ames). When Kharis (Lon Chaney Jr.) eventually captured Amina, she transformed into the 3,000 year old mummy of Princess Ananka.
*+Vegeta solo* Anck Su Namun was also briefly reanimated as a mummy in the '99 remake, until Evelyn dispatched her with help from the Book of the Dead. She was resurrected in the sequel but no longer a mummy.
Wonder Woman had a strong female lead so now we can't have damsels in distress anymore? People like Wonder Woman because its a great movie, not because everyone is yearning for an era of girl power.
+Steven Barna No, but...when were damsel in distress characters, or any character that was always just meant to be saved all the time was every that well liked? People didn't MIND it back then. And it's not like Deadpool had a love interest that was that macho either, and as a matter of fact, she was pretty sexualized, but even when she was, she was way more fun that this girl in this movie. This girl was really boring, had not one bit of character, and that's more infuriating. Deadpool's love interest aka Vanessa, didn't act like the kind of character that she looks like. She does get saved, but you at least liked her before then. Also, I heard a lot of people actually really hate Willie Scott from Temple of Doom, so I don't think you can say that that actually worked in the movie's favor.
My biggest issue with this movie is the fact, that Tom Cruise runs away from extremely sexy Sophia Boutella who just wants to give him some super powers and make him her mighty immortal lover. I would have taken the offer into consideration if I were him...
Svetoslav Popov if WW is legitimately the worst movie you have ever seen then you havent seen many movies. I mean youre allowed to dislike it but...worst ever?
How did you feel about the friend character playing essentially the same role as the friend Jack in American Werewolf in London? Also it felt contrived that Cruise was cursed as the mummy's chosen one; the action it took for him to be cursed felt so passive and in practicality she could've chosen someone better.
I definitely feel like Fraser's Mummy films, at least the first, are unfairly overlooked as being fun escapist schlock (in the best possible way). And the screenplay to that first one was kind of perfectly paired with a great cast that gave each character unique personalities...not deep on an emotional level, but where each of them felt like individual people rather than forgettable no-names that simply fade together. It's a quality that's typically disregarded in action/adventure films but when you see it (Aliens, Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon...not that the Mummy is on the same level but you all get my point) it certainly should be commended.
I like the classic Universal mummy movies and the Hammer remakes, but Brean Fraser's movie get a pass because it has a certain Indiana Jones vibe, you can truly enjoy it. Even the second to a lesser degree and Scorpion King kind of remembers me of Conan the Barbarian I put it over the second mummy. The third is pure crap.
hey Chris, my name is T, not going to use my full name, I just want to say how you influenced my love for film and how I can watch your videos every day and still be entertained, you are different from most critics and I adore that
I always prefer it when the comedy relief in action movies come from the main star him or herself. By showing that the hero has moments of awkwardness, or clumsiness, or has a tendency to not always make the best decisions.
What's wrong in complaining about weak ass character in a movie that you expect to be good and which comes from franchise known for their strong characters, be it male or female? I am getting tired of this new trend of anti-SJW woke. You guys are as bad as those SJWs and just as cancerous. This video is reviewing a movie, so, of course people are gonna discuss about the movie's characters. Go and cry in those feminist cringe compilation comment section instead questioning why people are discussing about the weakness of a protagonist in the comment section of the review video about the film in question.
Before seeing the movie: Jake Johnson wasn't funny on New Girl. He wasn't funny in Jurassic World. He isn't funny in The Mummy. Three strikes, you're out. Sorry you aren't quite good looking enough to be a leading man, dude, but stop trying to hide in comedic roles when you aren't actually funny. After seeing the movie: I actually liked what they did with Johnson while he was dead. I also liked the horror aspects of the Mummy and her minions. The rest of the movie however... felt like I was being mummified. God, the Jenny character was just a blonde mannequin brought to life and taught to read lines from a thousand movies, but with zero likability.
Mine shifted from The Mummy to a grindhouse t.v. show. I've seen the same, 30 second add so many times that I can quote it, and it's only been announced for four days. Nothing deters me from seeing a show or movie more than seeing the same shitty preview/trailer repeatedly.
Tom, thanks for many years of excellent acting. I read a small part of your Bio this morning and finally understood why Scientology FITS You! Your study in Franciscan theological beliefs pulled it all together for me. I use to ask myself "why did Tom choose Scientology' and 'why does it FIT him like an expensive good looking suite on good looking man such as Yourself?'" Now I know the answer and it is because of Your Seminary training that revealed to me that You are a very Spiritual person seeking to develop Your BEST Self. Once again, I thank You for many years of EXCELLENT action pack MOVIES!!! I wish You and Your daughter and Everyone else in Your Life the BEST OF LUCK & SUCCESS!!! Now I can go watch "The Mummy" for the 1st time!!! Lol...lol...
Chris, I know it’s random but I’d love to see you go back and review some older Tom Cruise films okay? How about Top Gun, Born on the Fourth of July, Few good men, Eyes wide shut, risky business.
Jeez, this is what happens when you try to rush up a cinematic universe just to get some big bucks without giving thoughts on actually crafting a GOOD MOVIE. The Dark Universe is bound to fail BIG TIME.
Glen Wang Dracula Untold was supposed to have stated the Dark Universe off but failed, guess that is why they have gone for bigger named actors this time in Cruise and Crowe to try and sell it better this time out but it looks just as bad as Dracula Untold!
I agree. I watch most of this reviews with my chromecast, and everytime I play a video from Chris I have to remember to turn down the volume. Besides, I never got the whole explosion thingy, it doesn't seem to match with his calm down way of speaking.
I enjoyed the Mummy film with Brendan Fraser from the 90's. I'm not gonna act like it's a masterpiece, I mean the effects for one thing have aged really, really poorly. But it's enjoyable for what it is. The second one was meh, not as good as the first but ''okay'', but yeah I'm with Chris the CGI for the Rock was amazingly bad. And the third one with Jet Li was just plain crap.
Chris, great review, would have also loved to have heard your opinion of Universal bringing out this idea of a Dark Universe to revive all of their classic horror movies (the mummy was the first in the lineup). Personally, I think they made this movie in the trailer look more like a giant action movie with a tinge of horror, not the great horror dark gothic evil movie that they were maybe aiming for. It's the first one so I can't go too hard on it, but I hope they take reviews from this movie and help to improve the others
@@anthonychobot2342 when dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde showed up I was just thinking... I thought this was a mummy movie why is this movie take place in London why is dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde and this movie why are there zombie looking nights in this movie why is there Tom Cruise in this movie what the s*** is this movie
I have no desire to rush to this movie for a few reasons. First, I like the Brendan Frasier Mummy. A great popcorn adventure movie. Second, I really wanted to see them do the original 1932 story. The story of the bad guy being a man who puppetmasters the mummy as a weapon. Third, I have not seen this movie, but seeing the 3rd trailer, it looked like the trailer gave away how Cruise fights and stops the mummy. C'mon guys, you don't spoil the ending of the movie in a trailer. I'll wait for Netflix and a night of complete ennui. edit = spelling corrections
Enzo Matrix let people watch the movie and decide for themselves. The movie had TWO attractive females in lead and supportive roles. Both were strong, tough, independent female characters. It's a very watchable movie. Two strong handsome men, and two strong beautiful women, two deep and lasting friendships, etc. Was it perfect? Who cares! It was entertaining and that's 😎
For context, I have not seen the - 99 Mummy in 15 years. I loved this movie for a nice Christmas movie. Mostly because I love horror and Sofia's Mummy was awesome. I loved her Siren-type of lure and her story. Now, there were a lot of confusing things about this movie, but at least I got a badass villain and Tom Cruise being something else than just a very typical hero. Would love for him to explore a dark/asshole kind of role further because we are very used to him being the good guy.
I don't know if most people realized this while watching the movie, but Set (or Seth) is actually the god of Chaos and War, not death. The death god is his son, Anubis.
Maroof Juneja I am a huge fan of him too. I felt the same way about this movie and I'm taking a bunch of my friends with me. They aren't exactly concerned with critical and technical parts of a movie and just want to have fun, which perfectly seems to fit.
The big mistake here is they went big budget action when these films should be Gothic horror.
Exactly. A mummy is supposed to a horrifying creature, not some sexy babe.
THANK YOU! Send some indi filmmakers with like 20m to go make some gritty grounded monster movies!
Kei Kurono Thank you. Everyone acts as though the 1999 movie defines what the mummy is but it truly should be horrific.
Kei Kurono 100% agree. I don't know what his favorites are but the best are probably Vertigo, 8 1/2, A Clockwork Orange, Metropolis, Star Wars, LOTR, and The Third Man.
I wonder if this dude smuggles food to theaters
That's so random, lol

Why does Tom cruise remind me of Nathan drake from the Uncharted game series
I grew up with scenes of tom cruise running frantically. I give The Mummy an A+
No you'll prolly give it a D cuz not enough running scenes in this one.
I give it an F because no Brendan Fraser, and i need my fuckin Fraser fix
i think even if fraser was 100 years or dead, some idiots will still want him in the mummy. Summary of America Today

CHRIS, COWBOY BEBOP IS GETTING A LIVE ACTION SERIES....
KILL US
That's not happening, it'll be canceled after Ghost in the Shell flopped so bad.
It's a TV series, not a movie.
Live action series*
I want to watch
Geek Mate I'm one of those who actually liked GITS live action movie, so I'm excited for Cowboy Bebop TV show/movie.
Cracked me up when you said "he teams up with a dude named Chris, nice name, played by..." 😂😂
calling it now that the mummy gets a C- or D
close enough, and definitely not gonna check this movie out in theaters
+Sven Vee Doesn't need you to =/
I liked scorpion king for the action even if it was cheesy and cliche
damn Chris on the trending tab?? I never thought I'd see the day! It has been amazing to see you grow as a content creator man!
If there's no Brendan Fraser, I'm not watching it
Anastasia Edunova Watch it for Tom Cruise.
Anastasia Edunova agreed!
Anastasia Edunova this isn't a reboot of that franchise anyways lol
no boris karloff no mummy. fuck the 1999 remake shit
Brendan Fraser > Tom Cruise all day every day
I miss The Mummy with Brendan JUUUSSTT Fraser.
Oh, I see what you did there...
*makes the most obvious wink possible*
I was hoping he'd make a cameo :(
Maybe the reason Tom Cruise runs so much is because he's practicing his escape from the Church of Scientology
Cillian Brouder lol that might be it
He runs from his gay thoughts lol
Just like in real life, women are constantly having to be saved by men. That's just how it is
My biggest issue with this movie is the fact, that Tom Cruise runs away from extremely sexy Sophia Boutella who just wants to give him some super powers and make him her mighty immortal lover. I would have taken the offer into consideration if I were him...
So basically, just go see Wonder Woman again.
Yep. Way better movie.
the worst movie I've watched, ever, WW I mean, no way Mummy is worse
Tom mostly comes out at night. Mostly.
WW is much more insultingly stupid than you :)
Svetoslav Popov if WW is legitimately the worst movie you have ever seen then you havent seen many movies. I mean youre allowed to dislike it but...worst ever?
"How do we make the the Mummy interesting again?"
"4 PUPILS!"
Everytime I get on youtube I get a 30 second un-skippable ad of this.
How did you feel about the friend character playing essentially the same role as the friend Jack in American Werewolf in London? Also it felt contrived that Cruise was cursed as the mummy's chosen one; the action it took for him to be cursed felt so passive and in practicality she could've chosen someone better.
Chris! Congrats on almost 1 milion subs!
For anyone curious, I know which carboard box to flip over to find Brendan Fraiser.
Dormammu, I've come to bargain for Brendan Frasier
The one Tom Cruise is standing on?
meh The Mummy movies with Brendan Fraser were never that special, he can stay a bum

Miss X Raw was sick... A good film but SICK!
That's kinda weird!
Miss X is Tom cruise your Daddy
Brendan Fraser forever.
tesla192000 ❤️yes!
Fraser made those movies fun to watch. I have no interest in seeing this because it doesn't look fun.
Rachel Weisz
hey Chris, my name is T, not going to use my full name, I just want to say how you influenced my love for film and how I can watch your videos every day and still be entertained, you are different from most critics and I adore that
I love your sweater Chris.
Another awesome video 😄
Have a great day
I always prefer it when the comedy relief in action movies come from the main star him or herself. By showing that the hero has moments of awkwardness, or clumsiness, or has a tendency to not always make the best decisions.
"He teams up with a guy named Chris (nice name)"
Ooooooooooooohhhhhh I see what you did there

It's funny how so many guys in the comments are crying about females in lead roles
it's pathetic, they are very insecure.
Lara Lara
Insecure for wanting better written female leads?? Your logic is extremely flawed.
Sofia Boutella can catch this meat no matter what character she plays forreal

Before seeing the movie:
Jake Johnson wasn't funny on New Girl. He wasn't funny in Jurassic World. He isn't funny in The Mummy. Three strikes, you're out. Sorry you aren't quite good looking enough to be a leading man, dude, but stop trying to hide in comedic roles when you aren't actually funny.
After seeing the movie:
I actually liked what they did with Johnson while he was dead. I also liked the horror aspects of the Mummy and her minions. The rest of the movie however... felt like I was being mummified. God, the Jenny character was just a blonde mannequin brought to life and taught to read lines from a thousand movies, but with zero likability.
What horror aspects there was nothing horror
@@jarrodedson5441 Well, it wasn't GOOD but there was technically a mummy and some zombies in the movie. That is within the parameters of horror.
Hell yeah you're number 13 on trending. Good Job Chris!!! Keep it up!!!
Tired of seeing these mummy ads. Anyone else?
cameron chlup Yes! They are the only ads on UA-cam! I'm sick of them! They make me not want to see the movie (I didn't anyways)!
cameron chlup literally one of the only reasons i clicked on this video over another video. Not that Chris' reviews aren't wonderful
Mine shifted from The Mummy to a grindhouse t.v. show. I've seen the same, 30 second add so many times that I can quote it, and it's only been announced for four days. Nothing deters me from seeing a show or movie more than seeing the same shitty preview/trailer repeatedly.
I got that UA-cam red so nope!
Watching a Playlist with multiple ads and EACH AD is a mummy ad! Over 50+ mummy ads, I'm boycotting
Nothing says 'The Mummy' like a hoodie with a blue spider on it
Well the trailer did warn you it's gonna be awfully boring
You can say that again
How about Top Gun, Born on the Fourth of July, Few good men, Eyes wide shut, risky business.
at least Tom Cruise runs in it
*ding*
Chris so you interviewed Collin Trevorrow which is the director of Star Wars 9.Did you asked him about Star Wars?
Jeez, this is what happens when you try to rush up a cinematic universe just to get some big bucks without giving thoughts on actually crafting a GOOD MOVIE. The Dark Universe is bound to fail BIG TIME.
Sell that damn name to DC. lol Dark Universe..
Glen Wang Dracula Untold was supposed to have stated the Dark Universe off but failed, guess that is why they have gone for bigger named actors this time in Cruise and Crowe to try and sell it better this time out but it looks just as bad as Dracula Untold!
I think I’m the only one who actually liked this film and thought it was good. Am I?
No I loved it.
Let's not forget Van Helsing and The Wolfman, Chris.

I agree. I watch most of this reviews with my chromecast, and everytime I play a video from Chris I have to remember to turn down the volume. Besides, I never got the whole explosion thingy, it doesn't seem to match with his calm down way of speaking.
I'm still wondering if you'll do a face reveal at 1 mil

"which one mummy 1932 or mummy 1999 or mummy 2017?"

Regardless of what you said in your review, I have to go see it because I'm a huge Tom Cruise fan.
I like and add to favourites even before watching; I call it the Stuckmann effect
The DORUK you've been Stuckmannized
I enjoyed the Mummy film with Brendan Fraser from the 90's. I'm not gonna act like it's a masterpiece, I mean the effects for one thing have aged really, really poorly. But it's enjoyable for what it is. The second one was meh, not as good as the first but ''okay'', but yeah I'm with Chris the CGI for the Rock was amazingly bad. And the third one with Jet Li was just plain crap.
It's fun to watch on a Sunday morning
Chris is like 2 weeks away from 1,000,000
Chris, great review, would have also loved to have heard your opinion of Universal bringing out this idea of a Dark Universe to revive all of their classic horror movies (the mummy was the first in the lineup). Personally, I think they made this movie in the trailer look more like a giant action movie with a tinge of horror, not the great horror dark gothic evil movie that they were maybe aiming for. It's the first one so I can't go too hard on it, but I hope they take reviews from this movie and help to improve the others
Scorpian King hilariocity review please!!!!
Oh God yes
I thought Dracula Untold was an ok movie.
hey Chris, could please you review koe no katachi ( A silent voice) ?

I have no desire to rush to this movie for a few reasons.
First, I like the Brendan Frasier Mummy. A great popcorn adventure movie.
Second, I really wanted to see them do the original 1932 story. The story of the bad guy being a man who puppetmasters the mummy as a weapon.
Third, I have not seen this movie, but seeing the 3rd trailer, it looked like the trailer gave away how Cruise fights and stops the mummy. C'mon guys, you don't spoil the ending of the movie in a trailer.
I'll wait for Netflix and a night of complete ennui.

Almost 1M! Pure Awesomeness Chris!
Chris. I'm surprised you haven't made a review on Van Helsing ( and it's Hugh Jackman). It's such a fun movie!
No cute Librarian/Archaeologist to bounce off the Male lead? No buy!
CHRIS GREW UP WITH THE MUMMY
Ohhh Noo....
@Wesley Huang I love this movie
If i think brendan frasers mummy trilogy is one f the greatest trilogies of all will this ruin it?
For context, I have not seen the - 99 Mummy in 15 years. I loved this movie for a nice Christmas movie. Mostly because I love horror and Sofia's Mummy was awesome. I loved her Siren-type of lure and her story.
Now, there were a lot of confusing things about this movie, but at least I got a badass villain and Tom Cruise being something else than just a very typical hero. Would love for him to explore a dark/asshole kind of role further because we are very used to him being the good guy.
Mummy 4:Electric Boogaloo
"You're gonna stab me, you mean intentionally?" Tom Cruise shoulda known better.
Sofia Boutella as the Mummy was fantastic. Hopefully she'll return for the role in future movies
I don't know if most people realized this while watching the movie, but Set (or Seth) is actually the god of Chaos and War, not death. The death god is his son, Anubis.
the way you make russell crowes character so mysterious and it was a pleasant surprise it can only mean he is playing an older version of rick
Before watching review: I'll definitely watch it
