- This is the second video in a new series, sharing about my sewing machines. Today, I'm talking about my vintage Singer Featherweight 221. I inherited this machine from my great-aunt and have only been using it for about 5 months. I share the features of the machine, and demonstrate how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and a bit of sewing. Plus, I talk a little bit about how much these machines cost.
I love the sound of this mechanical (non-computerized machine so, I've included a couple minutes of ASMR style stitching for your enjoyment. This section starts at time stamp 13:02 and ends at 15:12.
To learn more about the Singer Featherweight, I recommend checking out The Singer Featherweight Shop.
They have lots of accessories in their shop here: singer-featherweight.com
And lots of information on their UA-cam channel here: / @featherweightshop

I’ve been sewing on my Singer Featherweight since age 12!
I make all kinds of garments including knits. I don’t feel limited at all. There is a buttonhole attachment and walking foot that work perfectly.
That's fantastic!
I know a few people who have this machine but I've never seen one in action. Now I want one! This is a great video. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
There is zig zag and buttonholer attatchments for the singer featherweight . I have both and they are great . My FW only goes out to quilt with groups. It's perfect for just piecing. I love that you are appreciating your Great Aunts machine. She would love seeing that.
So nice to see this video. I have a white FW that my mother gave me in 1968, and I'm still using it. I have the button hole attachment, but just made bound button holes before then. I don't have the zig zag attachment, but pinking shears are a great substitute to keep raw edges from raveling. You are lucky to have had such a generous aunt. Cheers from Oklahoma!
i just got one for use in my university dorm, the two buttons on the foot pedal are actualy designed for ergonomics, you rest your foot on the solid unmoving button(thats its purpose) then tilt your foot left or right to increase or decrease the speed, i was told that back in the 40's it was advertised as reducing ankle strain compared to pedals that have remained with modern machines, but i also know of some who cant get used to this vintage button style foot controler and have "adapters" that put a wooden pedal on top of the button to use it like a normal foot pedal.
Thank you for sharing that information! That's so interesting. I'll have to try using the pedal that way. I have pretty big feet so I'm not sure how well it will work for me. :)
@@SewDIY the Featherweight Shop has electronic foot pedals for the Featherweight, also feet, bobbins, belts, etc
I inherited this sewing machine last year and I haven’t used it yet. It looks wonderful and I now feel inspired to try it - will get it serviced first though too I think. Thank you for your very helpful video.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Have fun with your machine!
My sewing machine repair tech, who has been working in sewing machines for over fifty years & his father before him, calls that fixed/rigid plastic piece a "rest". It's a place to rest your foot in between various passes of sewing. I bought my Singer FW 221 from him after he restored it. Mine was commissioned in Jan. 1950. Best wishes.
Adding a p.s.
I purchased attachments for creating zig zag stitches & also buttonholes. A great resource for the Featherwight machines is "The Featherweight Store" which has supplies & teaching videos for those of us who are learning about this machine in more current days.
There are
Hi Susan! That's really interesting. I can't really imagine how that would work for me but I have really long feet. lol I'm sure it wasn't designed for my size of feet.
@@SewDIYy turning the foot pedal to the cable is near your heal, then you can rest your foot on the who control foot and rock your foot without getting cramp. The plus with doing this is you can feel when the controller gets warm and it may need a lil coffee break Check out the featherweight doctor She is fantastic and really knows her FW’s and also has service kits and will talk you any problems you may have, like the common issue of turning your hand wheel the wrong way and then getting a thread jam in the hook area 🤗also I highly recommend the original zig zag and buttonhole attachments. They stitch beautiful perfectly tensioned zig zags and button holes. Also any kind a thread stand will help with cross wound thread spools to save you adding any excess forces on the spool pin
Awesome machine, awesome video! Thanks!
“Beautiful” and “soothing” those are my words. Thank you now I’m even more excited about my recent purchase yet to arrive
These machines came with a buttonhole attachment and made great buttonholes!
That featherweight is in such great condition!
Yes! My great-aunt took very good care of it. :)
There are also buttonhole attachments for theses machines that work really well.♥️
Thank you for the tip!
@@SewDIY Yes, I got a zigzagger and buttonholer on eBay.
I’ve even seen zigzag stitch attachments for the Featherweight. Beautiful machine. I love it.
Sara's classic sewing has a great youtube on heirloom hand sewn buttonholes.
That's great to know! Thank you!
I just bought one of those for $10.00. It has a Case, some unknown to me parts and the Book that comes with it.
I will be giving it to my Sister who just started quilting
That's a great find! You have a lucky sister.
Button hole and zigzag attachments for all featherweights.
If you can find one for less than $500, get it. As long as the motor works and the bobbin case is in it. Otherwise, bargain it down. Nearly everything but the motor can be repaired. Motor repairs are iffy.
Agreed! I love this machine.
The tape you use for a seam guide will degrade the finish. Just sayin' if you want to keep it as good as possible. And the $1200 is WAYYY out of line for one in other than new never used condition. $500 is more reasonable for a good one, working with parts and case. The white and tan ones are more rare and more expensive.
