I just bought a Thomas & Betts ERG299 for a buck at the flea market.
    He wanted $2 but I didn't want to break a $20.
    Now I find out it's about a $150 tool!
    I DUN GOOD!

Came here to find out what the lo-hi gear setting did and after your vid had a good look at the mechanism. So I found Hi and Lo gear is amount of trigger force needed and is just like gear's on a bike.
Lo gear allows the tail grabber to be spring interfaced to the trigger requiring to be squeeze further but with less force and hand strain.
Hi gear directly interfaces them meaning your cable tie will cut earlier with a shorter squeeze but more force is needed.
If you wanna see, look inside the trigger as it is squeezed. Set the gun to a high setting (the 1-8 one) and use it on a cable tie without cutting the tie.
For someone like me with small hands (why all my crimp tools have long handles for more leverage and easier squeezing), I would be using Lo gear.

I would have thought that would have changed the amount of squeezes to clip off a same length zip tie. So the force adjusts? And by doing it with no drag the test was invalid? Hmmm now I need to try this. Thanks for the feedback!

Ingot this one but must be doing something wrong. Its not tightening them at all unless i can manually pull the tag to 40lbs with it still twisting

So..can we view the ERG120 as a superset device of the ERG50? In other words, if I bought the bigger ERG120, would it be able to cut all of the zip tie sizes the ERG120 does NATIVELY PLUS all of the zip ties that the smaller ERG50 does? Or is there something about the ERG120 that prevents it from cutting smaller zip ties? And I hope my question here doesn't betray my vast ignorance in some way. :-) Thanks in advance.

Only thing I can think of between the two of them the 50 has a smaller teeth grabber as the 120 has more spaced out and deeper teeth to fit in the groves of the ziptie.

LOL. I watched your ERG50 video to find out what the HI GEAR and LO GEAR buttons are for. The mystery continues...

I cannot figure it out! I think I might tear it down and figure out the mechanics.
