When this song first came out we used it in our Jazzercize class to one of our routines.
Charlie Daniels was a wonderful man. I met him on his birthday.
This came out in 1979 and was a huge crossover hit and is still played on both classic country and classic rock radio stations.
I'll be 55 in September. I saw them perform this on Saturday Night Live, the first time I ever heard a swear word on Live TV!
Crossover before anyone knew what crossover was. Legendary song.
I can't stand Country music, but this is objectively an epic piece of music.

Charlie Daniel's. Best fiddle player ever. I got to see him once in Fayetteville, Arkansas and it was so great to see a LEGEND do his thing. Very honored to have been in his presence.
The violin and the fiddle are the same instrument. The main difference is the context and manner in which it is played.
Attributed to Charlie: A violin has strings, a fiddle has strangs.
If you spill expensive champagne on your instrument, it's a violin.
If you spill cheap beer on it, it's a fiddle.
You know, years ago I once mentioned to someone that I thought the Devil's part sounded way better.
He simply replied; "well yeah, he cheated, of course it sounded better, he got demons to join in.
I was just like; "....oh yeah, huh....that did happen, didn't it..." 😆
People always go on about how the devil cheated using a backup band and all that... but he did honor the bet in spite of that, he paid up at the end.
@@MarrockV yeah that was never really a question, I guess it just surprised me because I presumed they would have made Johnny's part noticably better to emphasize that he won.
@@MonsterGaming-rh7sb Per interviews with Charlie Daniels, Johnny's part actually carries a melodic tune and is more technically difficult, where the devil's part is "just a bunch of noise" that doesn't actually require much skill. The bet was about ability, so Johnny was the winner. (Plus if you listen back half the devil's section was just the demons playing backup without him even fiddling at all.)
@@Auxana13 right, and that's the thing. I'm not saying the devil played better fiddle than Johnny, just that I think it sounded better.
To be fair, this is partially personal preference, I tend to like hard rock and heavy metal after all.
Plus like I said, he had help.
(Edit) Also, if they legitimately said the "devil's part was just a bunch of noise" then that's hilarious because it was easily my favorite part of the song. ^.^

One of my favorites from Charlie Daniels is called The Legend of Woolly Swamp....completely unique sound and story and doesnt get enough love lol

In 1984 I went to a 7 hour general admission outdoor concert in New Britain Connecticut starring Charlie Daniels, Stevie Ray Vaughn and The Allman Brothers Band. What a great concert.

This is kinda based on Southern folklore and legends. Devil Stories, or Old Scratch stories are common in the south. There is also a connection between the Devil and music. According to old Southern and Black Folklore if you go out to a crossroads on a certian day with a musical instrument like a guitar or fiddle, at midnight the Devil will show up and in exchange for your soul, he will tune your instrument and you will play like a master musician. However the fame and fortune is fleeting, because the Devil always collects his debts...usually sooner than later.

I saw The Charlie Daniels Band blow The Rollin Stones off the stage way back in the 1970s ! Great show !
~ Though the Stones made a lot of good records, I wouldn't cross the street to see them live.
Saw Charlie Daniels at the Fayette County Fairground (Pennsylvania) in '94, and it was an _excellent_ show. Charlie Daniels Band was one of the best.

Some people think the devil's part was better. He cheated though. He was relying on the other instruments. "Johnny " was playing by himself. That was why he won. Great reaction!! I am now a new subscriber. Can't wait to see more reactions.

A lot of the things Johnny was singing were tropes in old bluegrass/country music. What you said about how fast he was playing, it was common for others trying to play this to end up breaking their strings

One of the things I never got with this song is how Johnny beats the devil; I used to think the devil's bit was better, because of the weird way he plays, but even the Devil knows he's beat by solid good music played well, innovation be damned, structure and purity beats flash-in-the-pan ... there's a further clue in the vocals before Johnny's bit: '"Fire on the Mountain" run boys, run; The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun; Chicken in a bread pan pickin' out dough; Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no.' Two songs are referenced here: 'Fire on the Mountain' and 'House of the Rising Sun' both about ruination brought on by chasing the bigger better deal and pleasure ... and then the two most curious lines, which are near impossible to pick up without looking up the lyrics: one referencing wholesome rural pastoral life, and the other a polite social exchange between youngers and elders regarding social bounderies and navigating around the possibilities of simple pleasure and pain bounded by a social setting. He, and therefore his music, is unbeatable due to its grounding in something greater than gold. You get the feeling that the golden fiddle is meaningless to him; he would have taken the bet over whatever was offered, or nothing at all, and still won. In fact, the only danger to Johnny is in accepting the golden fiddle; I like to think he left it there and went home for grits and a little moonshine. This is also probably the Devil's real game: lose, and destroy the wholesome country lad with the winnings.

That instrument he's playing is called a fiddle, its similar to a violin but puts out a different sound. The devil is challenging the fiddle player to see who plays it best in exchange for his soul..
