  • MINIMALISM and being busy » Rejecting hustle culture // Let's discuss how minimalism can be applied in your career and life goals. I talk about being busy, hustle culture, toxic productivity, stress, workaholism. I answer the questions: "what is hustle culture?", "is hustle culture toxic" and how to be productive in a healthy way.
I've been living a minimalist lifestyle for quite a while. This means I don't need my income to be very big, in order to live my life the way I want to live it. If you simplify your life, it's possible to have less stress and practice regular self care. When we spend less, we can choose to save more, or earn less, and still love our life.
Everyone should do what works for them. Please take from this video what you can use, and leave the rest. :)
When are we good enough? How much money and status do we need, in order to be seen as succesful? And what are we willing to give up in order to achieve that? Is being constantly busy, tired, stressed, an overworked workaholic necessary? Are we lazy or unambitious if we choose to want less, need less?

I'm currently on maternity leave and people are constantly asking me when I'm going back to work or why I don't study during my leave. I just want to be with my daughter and appreciate her first years because I don't want to miss her developement.

Yes! I can believe that. We are programmed to work and work. Strive for the house and car and expect to relax when we retire. But who is to know how long we will have. It’s better to strive for a balance now. Don’t wait. Yes work but enjoy what you love along the way. Don’t put it off until retirement. We may not be able to do what we love when that time comes. I’m in my early 40’s and I’ve realized this in the last few years. I don’t want to be a slave to my things.

@@tippytoe1250 If you have 10 years of free time at once, it may be boring, especially if you don't have energy to do what you wanted. 200 years ago people raised 6 children and they had enough free time every year from November 15 until March 15. In the last 100 years or so, people became crazy, because they are unable to work less than if they had 6 children (read Industrial Society and Its Future).

Totally true. I adopted three years ago the hustle culture and fast forward more than two months ago I developed an illness. Still recovering but getting depressed since I don't know I will ever recover. I sacrificed my family, friends and my life for something I now have doubts if I even want.

I attended the funerals of too many friends who died too young from stress related illnesses. They kept putting off their future happiness to "someday". Sadly, that day never came. Money can't buy you self- respect, happiness or love. Sometimes you just have to stop and listen to your heart to find your inner dreams.

This spoke to me so much I teared up.
The last two years I convinced myself that the key to happiness and success would be fully adopting the formula of hustle culture. When it didn't work I just piled on the guilt and told myself I wasn't trying hard enough. I hated almost every second of it, the highs were few and made the lows feel even lower.
I gained 20lbs, thousands in debt, my anxiety spiked immensely, I became depressed. I didn't have time for my friends and family and when I was with them I was so full of the constant guilt of what I "should" be doing that I wasn't really present. I lived in a state of burn out and feeling like I wasn't enough.
I'm so glad I finally came to the realization that I didn't HAVE to do what everyone was saying I should if it didn't feel good. I'm also so grateful that I've found this channel, because you truly provide me with a feeling of inspiration rather than the previous guilt and fire of what I thought was inspiration in the past.

To listen to this wise young woman gives me hope for the future. I grew up in Sweden in the 1970's. My parents lived in a minimalistic way. My father allways said that it isn't the income that makes you rich, it's what you choose to spend... My parents had no high income. My mum stayed at home and took care of the family most of the time. Despite this my parents had a good savings on the bank when they got old. I use to remember these 1970s saturdays when I woke up and was completely free to do what I wanted. Nowadays most people don't live like this here in Sweden. They are very busy with achieving different goals even as kids. Sports and other acivities are making them busy. And the parents strive to pay their high morgage on their expensive houses...

Even though i have a college degree, I work construction. I'm a carpenter. I went to construction because of the time off. Generally, once the job is completed you get laid off. I can't handle only two weeks off a year. I used to spend all my free time just recovering from work. I had no time to work on myself.

    First question:
    Hi, what is you name?
    Second question:
And what work do you do?
The first question is just politeness, we probably forget the name. But not their job. We define people by their job. No wonder everybody is obsessed about their work. It's the most important social status thing

In Latin America (I am Mexican) we have this habit of wanting to work harder and thus have many things. This not only causes us to be very busy; but also, we use the little time we have left to buy things. Which generates a vicious circle that is very difficult to get out of.

I choose to live frugally so I don’t have to work 50+ hours a week. I struggle with feeling like people are judging me as lazy. Being busy makes me stressed and anxious. As an introvert I need time to decompress and relax. I wish more extroverts understood this. It’s especially hard when it comes to jobs. I mean think about it, you end up missing days and going back to square one anyway. Better to spend less money and have more free time. It evens out. I mean, if it works for you, you do you boo. But it's not my cup of tea. So glorifying it is really unnecessary, we already have a lot on our minds and constant pushing is just too overwhelming. My parents worked too hard for too long and in the process they forgot to enjoy life, which I found really sad😢
They were always saving for retirement, so they didn’t get to enjoy the simple things like a coffee out together etc. As they were always saving for the future.
Mum retired at 57 and dad was 60, but they acted far older than their years, they were worn down by life, and always planning for the future not enjoying the present.
They lived to a quite good age mum was 80 and had dementia for the last 6 yrs of her life 😢and Dad was 82.
Unfortunately by the time they got to retirement they had forgotten how to enjoy themselves, and really didn’t enjoy life at the end.
They become bitter I think because they realised just how quickly their lives had gone and I think in hindsight they were questioning was all the saving and working hard really worth it, I felt they were learning that lesson too late.
I really learnt a valuable lesson from this, of course it’s important to try to safe guard your future if you can, but life is for enjoying as well.
It’s the journey through life that’s important, it’s all the simple pleasures not just focusing on one thing to the detriment of everything else.

Being too busy is a choice. One has to self examine and peel away the layers as to why they are keeping themselves so busy and what they are running away from. In most cases it is insecurity through allowing peer pressure get to you. You are fortunate to have moved past this phase at such a young age Vera! Your messages will help others. • @curiousone6435

This is simplistic and slightly insulting, to be frank. There are some who have nobody to depend on but themselves, and there are others who (in addition to that, perhaps), have others counting on them. In a nation with no safety net and no worker protections, job security, and economic equality, some people have no choice but to work 2-3 jobs to put food on the table. Think of single mothers who don't/can't work high profile jobs, can't get maternity leave, and have to sacrifice income if their child gets sick or their car breaks down. Think of immigrants who are poorly treated and poorly paid, the types of industries they work in. The problem with hustle culture isn't that there's something wrong with individual people in it; the problem is that nobody can or DOES fight back to demand justice in such systems in order to secure a greater quality of life and abundance for ALL.

Bacaus of that my husband thinks, that not working after work on our new build home and not working on Saturday is waste of time. He thinks, it is almost outrageous to go for a walk for 30 min in a week day... This is very tiring, I want to enjoy my life, I want to live and not work 24/7 and drop dead some day, or be so sick and stressed from working, that I can't enjoy anything in life.

About a decade ago I was right on the brink of severe burnout, I knew this and had to make a choice. I chose to give up that stressful job, which initially I had enjoyed, but had gradually over the years become a burden, as I was always being asked to take on more and more, to always reach for new targets which kept going up and up every year.
Because I did achieve these targets and because I was working so hard, long hours, no breaks etc, I actually became exhausted and so unfulfilled and a victim of my own success.
I took on a couple of different roles but began to realise that there were things I wanted to do outside of work.
I decided to retire, cut my cloth accordingly, which was actually easier than I thought it would be.
That was the best decision, as I have my time back, most of my health back and I am happy to have realised that working too hard for too long can be detrimental in the long run, to mental and physical health

I love the beautiful meditative images you have included in this video too. I noticed that I felt calm and I breathed when looking at the beautiful images of waves, leaves, birds and so on. I also noticed that I didn't feel that way when I watched the images of someone working, haha. That speaks volumes to me!

    A 20-year old aspiring screenwriter here 👋
Ever since I decided that I wanted to write meaningful screenplays, that vision had been distorted by the ideas of hustle culture. I would put such strict rules and deadlines on myself in order to see “results”. It really ate at me mentally and it manifested in ways I couldn’t see until I allowed myself the space to relax and go about things with the flow of the universe. At my age it’s easy to feel that you’re getting left behind by your peers that are taking the college route, everything seems so clear for them. That made me want to “hustle” 100x more. I’m starting to realize why I chose this for myself and it brings me confidence to say that it’s from a place of love rather than competition. So to all those who’ve read this far, thank you and I hope you’re all enjoying your unique journeys ✌️

Totally agree with this! thank you for sharing, Vera! I work for a big tech company, and it is quite an intense work environment. A few years ago, I was working over hours all the time, trying to get promoted fast, climb the ladder, etc. which led to burnout (3 trips to the ER, one month off work). And that was when I decided to change my outlook on work. I moved from Ireland to Switzerland, and promised myself to be more respectful of my boundaries (work life balance). At the same time, I met my partner who happens to be 17 years older than me, and it changed my outlook on life even more: I decided to start pursuing FIRE (Finance Independence Retire Early -- though for me RE stands for "Relaxed Employment"), and decided to work towards a retirement from corporate life at 40 (in 6 years now). With that in mind, I changed so much my outlook on what does career mean, and what I want my life to be. I doubt I would say "I wish I had worked more" on my death bed, so instead, I want to focus on what I don't want to say (I wish I had spent more time w/ people I love, taking care of myself, spending time in nature, etc.) and this feels so good to step away from the grinding mentality!

These will acclaim you as a successful person and remember the time and talent and simple sacrifices you made on their behalf. No need to rush through life but live it each day. I thought becoming a Substitute teacher would be easier than my other office jobs I've had, but honestly it's not. I have to wake up at 5am and be at work by 7am. Working with children in schools these days us stressful. I'm considering becoming a vlogger. I'd rather wake up after being well rested at my age. I'm getting up in age and have experience in life and things I think I could share and be helpful to others. Thank you for sharing!❤

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, yes I can imagine being a teacher can be a very stressful jobs, and it's actually a field where burnouts are very common. Teachers are so important and I feel they deserve to be treated well and fairly. If you ever do start a vlog, then I wish you all the best!

I actually have trouble with dealing with other people’s busyness. I work hard (teacher) but on my days off and in the weekend I love to just do “nothing”. I feel like I need to go out, be social, have adventures because my close friends and coworkers never have a weekend like me. And the comment “oh, I wish I could! That sounds like heaven!” when I tell them I spent my weekend reading, makes me feel like a boring lady.

I'm not as busy as I'd like to be because I'm not in grad school until September. So im using this time to develop better habits, enhance my resume, practice regular self care, read more, cook more (vegan), and learn to prioritize my productivity.

I totally agree with you! And the distraction of Instagram, Twitter fb etc adds to this idea in our culture that we must be a part of something, showing or doing something all the time etc. It's everywhere and it's so important to step back from it. It really helps for me to take weekly (at minimum, ideally) breaks in nature.

You bring up many good points. I watch videos of people who work 80 hours a week and hardly sleep worries me. I can’t see the value in accumulating money and things if you drop dead from stress and a heart attack. Not saying this will always happen but our bodies will rebel if not treated correctly. I am struggling with the thought of starting a business with the thought of balancing my life so nothing suffers.

I absolutely reject the hustle life. I think for some, it's not possible to have a life that's a little slower, but if you have an opportunity to relax, take it!
I graduated from my masters program in July of 2019. I went back home to spend time with family and friends and I'm just now thinking of applying for a job. I'm glad I took the time to work on my mental health and my wellbeing. I spent time with my friends and family, traveled, and made memories. That to me, is worth more than hustling and burning out.

The place I work considers ‘busy’ people to be a bad thing. The aim is to be working on tasks only part of your day that way if something breaks or comes up you are available to help and if nothing comes up we consider that day a win. If a task or process becomes a time suck then the system is broken and we need to find ways for it to be more efficient.

Since you've asked, my opinion is that the word 'work hard' that makes me not like it. Ironically enough the key to success (to which definition is a personal thing to ach individual) is doing that productive thing that you like. That way you never have to work in your life, yet get paid for that what you like to do.

I work far away from home it takes me an hour drive to get to my work place i found my self spending 90 % of my time at work even if want to simplify my life i couldn't because am stuck in my 9 to 5 job well i get out of the house at 7am and get home at 6h30pm now am burnet out and want to quite the whole thing and start over from scratch. And trust me i did every thing from journaling to gratitude listes to minimalism in order to have a healthy lifestyle but that didn't save me from burnout beacause i was telling my self stay positive stay focused and no matter what get up show up and do your best yeah i actually hang that quote by the bed when it was so hard to get up in the morning when my body was so sore and telling me to stop, those quotes sometimes are encouraging this hustle culture and we see them everywhere and you fell guilty if you don't live by them

Loved the video,Vera. I think hustle culture is like cigarettes. You get hooked on the whole idea and it will kill you. I have spent far too many years working 70-80 hours per week without have the time to realize the "good life" was always there for me if I would stop to appreciate it.

Was a type of consuption that I don't know how explain, but I didn't feeling happy in always want do more and have more work and money if I don't have time to enjoy my life. For now, I am becoming more confidence and I am changing my unhealthy behaviors. Thank you a bunch for your help!!! My life is becoming much better /o

Great content! I have exactly the same feeling. People don't say no to work, friends, unnecessary activities and end up being rushing all the time. If they don't have more things to do, they do more things to do. I welcome the idea of minimalism in my environment, however, in my everyday activities too. In my definition minimalism is about being aware and conscious of how we choose our space, time and money.

I worked at a roofing company that I knocked doors for. They where super toxic about always having enough "revenue generating" points. They would bitch and complain if you didn't meet your quota... So I ended up just faking a lot of it. I was so glad when I left. I'm still in the same industry with a different company and I'm way way way less stressed. I even get to make time for myself to lift in the mornings now.

I grew up as an only child to parents who were always busy. Thus I spent a lot of time entertaining myself. Also I have ADHD- so I did not learn social skills. My parents were always telling me I could do better.
Thus I struggled growing up. Unfortunately- that’s what I knew. I hope I was better at raising my son. I spent more interactive time with him.
You’re children will grow up and leave- don’t miss the opportunity to know who they are.

Something I was just talking with a friend of mine yesterday only.
It is indeed very important to take time for yourself and your well being. Working hard and hustling is good but not at cost of your physical and mental health.
It's good that a person loves working hard but someone else schedule and work ethic might not work for another person. Everyone should be self aware and walk their own path which suits them best instead of being blind folded by everyone who is pushing this culture.
What I do like from people like Gary Vee is that they do mention in their speeches that this is something that he loves to do and this might not work for everyone, it's good to know that he is aware of the fact that people can start feeling unstable and unhealthy, both mentally and physically by following work ethics like this.

I totally agree with you, being always busy doesn’t mean that we are living a productive or more meaningful life. In fact the hustle culture gives rise to stress related health problems. As a doctor, I can emphatically say this, as I see so many patients with what we call “life style diseases”.
