Cody Walsh same key definitely, but not the same style. Listen to the original and you’ll understand she overdid it completely and killed the emotional aspect of the song with a riff/run in every damn line. Stevie actually sings straight for most of the song, adding a riff or 2 in each verse but the runs come out in the final chorus.

Pretty sure Stevie sang in that almost overwhelming style of melismatic singing. Since you’ve listened to Buble’s version who is a very simplistic singer, hearing a lot of runs in this version must have caught you off guard.

KingofMeereen Stevie May indeed sing with loads of melismatic riffs and runs but......(this is something people seem to get confused) he doesn’t do that in this song AT ALL. He literally sings this song clean up until the final chorus where he lets it all out mostly because of the emotion behind the song.
Mariah messes up this version with the constant runs and riffs. It was almost like she was saying “hey look at me I can riff and run” she completely missed the emotional element of the song in its entirety

The woman always comes across so bitter and jealous of Mariah in every video. Would prefer if the guys did reactions alone.
Mariah Carey has vocal nodules since she was 7, and that causes an airy texture to her voice, and sometimes when her vocals are really tired when she belts, sometimes there is an airy squeaky sound that comes out of her as well. It's not something she can control or tighten up, that's just the very nature of her voice. Most of her life she has been trained to sing with and around her nodules. I think that's what Ovela meant, that Mariah can blend into any given atmosphere. It's because Mariah in excellent vocal condition can be powerful and piercing, but when her vocals are tired (or recovering such as this performance) she has free manipulation of her voice to sing other styles of singing such as singing in the alto range.

Buble’s version is way more easier and simpler than Mariah’s version. Mariah did a tribute of Stevie Wonder & Stevie did the EXACT same version as her with all the riffs & runs. You definitely should listen to Wonder’s version, since It was a tribute to him.
That's one of the beauties of Mariah's voice, it's so versatile people can like either the airy, sharp or bold tones she uses, there's a tone for everyone😊

I've watched this performance probably a thousand times in the past lol But what I love the most is how skillful and controlled her lower register is...she's giving us texture, runs and melisma and this proves that Mariah can blow you away in a song even without belting and hitting super high notes!

It’s airy because her vocal chords aren’t connecting properly. Usually people do exercises to fix that but Mariah works around it :)

She may not have the greatest lows but she's a soprano singing a tenor's lows even though they're airy it's impressive!

Mariah has really amazing low notes. Her voice is naturally raspy hence the airiness. She has always classified herself as an alto that's why she has these deep, strong vocals. As an alto, she is amazing at hitting them high notes too. 💗💗💗

I think it is fitting that she did runs through the whole song - Stevie Wonder is known to be an amazing "runner" and I bet she's doing it just for him. She's also intentionally using softer-airy tones as a style choice. She is able to do low notes that sound a little more full.

This artist is alucinante, she is by far the best vocal technician, she handles marvelously the low and very high notes, she is a mix of Franklin and great classical performers, a magician, I'm a fan since 1990 and I stay at every concert, nailed by its accuracy.
