Yeah he and Ted Bundy are some of the most interesting cases, but Jeff more for sure, it’s odd because he is very honest, shows remorse, and even shows some shame and guilt, he also explains how it’s his and only his fault for the things he’s done, all things out of character for a psychopath or even someone with anti personality disorder, very odd, it’s hard to put a finger on him and give him a specific diagnosis, that’s why I think there should be some scale representing socio/psychopathic and anti personality disorder tendencies because it’s not as simple as “he’s this”

I agree with Ross. Like there's always a loophole or some small thing that could've helped, but in the end, they still did disgusting things. The abuse and past of killers can be tragic and sad but it definitely doesn't justify their actions. It's simply an explanation, not justification.

Very well said. And with the new Netflix show it really humanized him in some parts. (Spoilers ahead) Especially when he was hesitant to kill Tony. You could really tell how he didn't want to do it, but the temptation was just too powerful. I definitely feel bad for the child that he was. Having divorced parents, being bullied, and having no friends must've been incredibly hard. But as you said, his past can be sad but it doesn't justify what he's done.

The difference with Dahmer and other serial killers is that for the most part he wasn’t sadistic towards his victims when they were alive. He apparently didn’t like the act of killing and got it over with quickly and was sadistic in a way towards their remains. He didn’t relish in evoking pain from people. Compare that to Ted Bundy for instance-he drew it out while they were alive and loved tormenting them. Maybe Dahmer could have been helped.

I dont know. I think the Dahmer was described as charming and magnetic, not as much as Ted Bundy thou. But in this movie he was such a wierdo and outcast when the most interesting thing about serial killers is that people don't expect them to be evil, they act normal, they are charming, they are social. And clearly Jeff in this movie was not normal and everyone knew. I would've like to see him being more manipulative with his friends and girls and not everyone's puppet. Anyway, the movie was ver refreshing and who can resist Ross? he is so handsome.

@HarmonyLife No the charming, manipulative killer is more of a movie cliche. Everyone who knew him as a teenager has described him the way he’s portrayed in this movie. People who knew him later as an adult said he was friendly enough and didn’t seem the type to hurt anyone, but he was never described as suave or magnetic. He was considered reasonably attractive by guys in bars and clubs but he usually lured them in by offering money in exchange for photos.

Here’s an idea, FilmRise, maker of “Mu Friend Dahmer”:
Make a 3-5 minute clip of Ross Lynch with older makeup on and a less “clean” look, reenact a famous Dahmer interview, and intercut scenes from THIS movie into that re-enacted interview as if he is having flashbacks. It’s be a fantastic way to market your movie in the future.

Just out of quarantine boredom -plus a fractured knee cap-(tripped over a #^%%> amazon box -(I waited 3 days to go to ER because 1) I didn’t think it was a huge deal-2) I hate hospitals and the pandemic increased that anxiety. But the 3rd day I woke up and the area around the injury swelled up to nearly the size of a volley ball. ER!!!
Anyway -off topic. I have some good “medication “ and relentless malaise -so I started movie binging whatever was free on UA-cam. This movie picked at random.
Like the majority of anyone who followed this case - I knew quite a wealth of knowledge about the horrific crimes. I think I my continued interest really kicked in when I saw the now legendary interview with Jeff and Stone Phillips. Wow. I was totally unprepared for the content of that interview. Jeff -like many serial killers we’ve come to know-had a personable demeanor. Polite. Very forthcoming. It wasn’t uncomfortable per se to watch - even when speaking of his actions- he is matter of fact -but not malicious.
I guess the real stunner there...was his dad. Who appeared to be supportive, caring, loving -and it was evident he carried enormous guilt and regret-that he didn’t help his son more.
(The last comment on that “aftermath” subject Is there is a widely believed rumor his parents were either indifferent or distracted with their own foibles-that they didn’t recognize any signs of trouble. But Lionel Dahmer DID repeatedly over many years starting with Jeff’s adolescent years try doggedly to help his son. The mother -also seen in that Dateline classic....was a neurotic nutjob who owned nothing of the entire saga. Pfft
Ok so this movie. I watched it - and all I can say first -is, it Is riveting. But not in the way I expected.
After viewing -I tried to do some other tasks, mundane paperwork, for instance -and my mind just seemed consumed with the movie. So I watched again.
Here is my honest opinion. It may not be popular opinion - it probably will piss people off
But watching this film - I was so engrossed in the superb aspects of the timeline, the spot on feel of that era, (I’m 4 years younger than Dahmer ) And the incredible -just jaw dropping work from every actor in involved. Nothing overly melodramatic-but nothing watered down. Ross Lynch.... is never heard of this young man. But he truly is the only person who I think could disappear so completely because of that. He studied his character so well. He carried himself -the hunched posture, the bottle thick glasses -the 70’s feathered hair. And the often ambiguous expressions. Jeffrey Dahmer apparently didn’t smile much. ( I can relate ) but when he did -it was like the sun came out for a second
Now the unpopular opinion. After watching nearly back to back -I realized what made the film so compelling.
Because right up to the last few seconds -when you see Jeff driving off into the twilight-picking up a hitchhiker-and the credits roll, if you can suspend imagination for a moment, this film could have been anyone’s experience in high school. The feelings of insecurity, isolation, the pain of family dysfunction, the established cliques that every high school has.
The feeling of not belonging anywhere.
But Jeff DID have friends, he did have a father at least that tried to encourage him. Although -later, like during the dateline interview, Lionel Dahmer remarked that had he known his son was having attractions to the opposite sex, he would have tried to change him through therapy. Pffft.
Jeffrey Dahmer was a memorable person -from the class of 78’ @ Revere High School. Had he never been heard from again -he wouldn’t be one of the invisible, non distinct kids. He had forged this zany reputation as a prankster-he had a club named for him!!!
A very powerful film. And definitely a different light.

  • @kaitiedaddezio4030

I think as spectators of the film, we have to keep in mind that while there is room for an explanation - maybe even empathy, for Dahmer's mental health and difficult struggles growing up, we cannot glorify who he was. There is absolutely no room for justification in what horrific crimes he committed. Yes, I do agree that he needed help, and I understand the extreme difficulty of mental health issues, the alcoholism he went through, etc., but while some may wish these issues were better portrayed, don't let these issues overshadow what he did. It is merely explanation - not justification, and this explanation opens up conversations revolving around these topics, but keep in mind that many of the victims' families, friends, etc. have to live with the fact that he murdered their loved one. We have to remember the victims' lives ended just as we watch a film about Dahmer's life. These are just my opinions, and please let me know if I said anything that is disrespectful or insensitive to the victims.

Most people don't talk about serial killers and the details about them because they were so gruesome and unfortunately there are many many cases now and it's always a difficult subject to talk about because no one knows if they were actually insane or they just wanted to. And most parents don't want to explain to their kids that the world can possess people who do this.

  • @jadynwagner1758
    @jadynwagner1758 4 роки тому +11

i also want to address the vile few of you who glamorize dahmer because of his past. there's a big difference between empathy and sympathy!!! it's okay to empathize and try to understand what they felt, but sympathy is pity. don't pity a SERIAL KILLER. you can feel bad for their past but don't say "they did what they did and it's all their parent's(or whoever/whatever happened) faults.". no one will ever understand the true psyche and reasons people kill people. Also i'd like to add that humans truly are individually unique. there are people who have experienced the same amount, or more, trauma with worse/similar mental issues and don't do this. you people need to stop coming up with brain facts and trying to convince yourself and others why him, and other killers, kill. in the end it's murder and assault and it's disgusting.

There's been allot of attention on Jeff Dahmer's situation lately that really needs tho be turned around to the reality of it. He stated he couldn't even live with himself and let that black SOB kill him. I'm not gay or bi but I'd happily befriend him & help him any way I could. I'm soooo upset by this whole thing. We'd be the same age now & Jeff had innate opportunities that would have proved him valuable to society had he been steered in the right direction and allowed to blow off this accumulation of bad thoughts & what others are saying about him being evil & a monster. I had a few dreams about him that were so REAL!!
