- Making a custom pick guard is an easy way to add a personal touch to factory instrument or a great finishing touch to a hand made instrument. This video explains how to make a veneer press and laminate three pieces of veneer to make a beautiful pick guard.
great video! the only thing most people seem to leave out is beveling the edges.
Absolutely, as long as they are measured and set up for the electric. I would make them out of 3 layers of veneer for strength.
@KuraMad2000 The tape I use comes from a scrap book store (Michaels, Hobby Lobby) and it's supposed to be very neutral and non-yellowing. Use high end tape and you can't go wrong. I've even seen some nicer double stick at the dollar store, but make sure it's the non-yellowing type.
@BigG063 I don't remember if I replied to you already about the veneer, but just in case I didn't you can find the veneer in many sizes and species on the internet or at a fine woodworking store like WoodCraft. You can get it as big as 4x8 sheets if you like, though it won't be necessary to get something that big. Good luck.
@stevevairocks1 Use a razor blade, xacto knife, or any other sharp knife. A pocket knife will work too, just be careful and cut slowly. It cuts pretty easily.
Great vid! Where do you get the veneer?
If you use double sided tape, is there any worry about any chemicals in the tape that might make the surface of your guitar change color after a while where the tape touches?
Hey man! Great video. Really instructive. I am trying to make a custom pickguard for my Breedlove acoustic. Where did you get the vinere (sp?) from? I kind of want to make my pickguard come across a big portion of the guitar, so I would need a bigger piece than those you have there.
You can make any kind of pick guard for any instrument with this technique.
