excellent video; thank you for NOT continuously mugging at the camera like so many other talentless buffoons on UA-cam who call themselves "influencers" you sir are a no BS doer.
One of the better designs I have seen so far because it seems very stable and the guides are only on the inside of the rails so you can pass road crossings and track changes.
An excellent design in concept and execution. If I may add one small suggestion that would lower the parts number and speed both the fabrication and set up times: Instead of the four floating Rod Clamps to hold the two Connect Rods, construct four-sided tubes that the Connect Rods would telescope into and be held with a set screw at each end. This would eliminate 16 each of the ISO 7089 - 8 - 140 HV, ISO 4032 - M8 and ISO 4762 - M8 x 40 (parts #7, 8 and 9 in RK0002-01-0002_side_guide_001.pdf) as well as having to drill 32 holes for their placement. Instead, just four threaded holes or welded nuts for the set screws would be required.
Brilliant Design! One thing I noted, I think you'll get less noise if you change out those steel bearings for roller skate or skateboard polymere wheels. I love the flexibility of the design, well done!
i really like this version... i'm keen to ride with my son, or friends, and this adds the ability to bring one's own bike, easy convertibility, and, stability... i'd suggest, or may add for myself at least, a couple mounts for the front wheels (Yakima style?) on the cross-members, and, perhaps, a seat-post 'hitch' with connector, (and a 'smart caster'?) so rig can be towed by one of the bicycles? that said, most will likely DRIVE to the rail ride... so, i love what you got going here!! thank YOU!!
Here in the UK, many old railway lines have been converted to cycleways. I like this idea better, although I think a seatpost suspension will be needed for long journeys. :D
As an owner of a rail bike, I must compliment you for your work; best design I have seen yet. It solves a few problems that I have with my rail bike. One improvement I suggest is to add a platform for your poor little doggy to ride. Well done! Can you tell me where you are?
Hello. Thank you for your nice comment. It probably doesn't look like it from the video, but there is a lot of space for improvement. Of course you're right. Poor dog. That was a mistake. I'm not taking her to the rails anymore. I'm from Nesovice, Czech Republic. The abandoned railway we're on is here: mapy.cz/s/holuvebuta
@@RobertKocian It's a shame that we are on opposite sides of the planet. It would be fun to get together and swap ideas. I am in the PNW, up in the corner of the 48 lower states. If you have watched any of Peter Hoffman's videos, I have been on some trips with him, and a number of others on abandoned US rails, also some active roads by permission, with track warrants, believe it or not. Great adventures.
Congratulations on your work Robert! Greetings from México. I would like to know if this design is ok for riding "solo". This means with only one bike. I am not sure if my wife will want to ride along with me always, so I am considering that sometimes I would be alone with my dog. Thanks for your help! Mario.
Hi Mario. Honestly I never tried this on long distance. Just a few meters. It works for shrot distance. Of course the main idea was both option. Single biker or double biker. But, I have no experience for long travel in single. Sorry.
Do you think that this design would be better if the you made it longer (with more space between the wheels), or are you happy to build it the exact same way if you do a second one? Thank you in advance for your reply. If it were longer it may track more accurately, but it may not do curves as well.
Hello Steven, Yes I do. I have second version but only on paper. In the CAD of course. It's not builded and not even tested. If you are interested, I can send drawings for viewing.
I like the dolly. Why is it so noisy? I don't think you need pneumatic tires (rails are perfectly smooth), just solid rubber to mitigate noise from there.
A motor car, or put-put(pop car) as we call them, has steel wheels and sounds like that. These are some motor cars: ua-cam.com/video/XCwDnirGz3Q/v-deo.html
You do beautiful work but i dont understand why steel and not aluminum. Probly for strength. Its not too much material so maybe the weight is fine. I believe youre a great engineer. I dont understand why the back wheels stay on the tracks.
Wow, it really exist. Hey, perfect idea. I tried a few 3d flex print and some others plastic attempts. But it doesn't work. Every broke. Nylon bearing is ordered on aliexpress. Thank You 👍
Noisy. Try Teflon skids instead of bearings and raise the height of the platform so you can clear the tall weeds. Otherwise it's a good design for either a pair of riders or for one rider to go get another rider.
This seems like the most stable and sturdy iteration I've seen yet. Great work 👏 I bought Mr. Bently's railbike plans but haven't gotten around to building it. Would you happen to have a spare build I could purchase from you?
Hello, If you mean existing parts, I don't have any. Just this prototype. If you're interested in the plans, you don't have to buy them. Look at the video description. Thank you for the compliments. But there's still a lot of space for improvement. I'm presenting this more as an inspiration.

Hello and thank you for the nice comment. Yes, that was the goal. To get through the crossing and the turnout. But the stability isn't so great. 😊

Yes, that's a good idea. To hell with manufacturing, but tightening 16 bolts is a pain in the ass 😁

for less noise
you could use
rollerskaterwheels
instead of bearings
Ya, those steel bearings are way to noisy ! It was driving me crazy just watching the video ! skateboard wheels would work great and they're durable !
Very nice! Like the adjustments ! Maybe try that with an electric bike! Way too much fun!!!!

Love it! Lowes sells grade 5 bolts that wont bend after use (bike axel). Look in the automotive bolts section. ❤
I like everything but that NOISE! Could skateboard wheels or something else plastic, quiet…be used?
Yes, the bearing noise is annoying, but it fits in the track switch. A plastic something would certainly help.
That noise is good!
That (skate board wheel) would quiet up considerably ! Nice thought !
Here in the UK, many old railway lines have been converted to cycleways. I like this idea better, although I think a seatpost suspension will be needed for long journeys. :D
They have rubber wheels which absorb all shocks on the rail. So no suspension necessary. It would be needed if you use steel wheel.
Jste borec! Zdravím na Jižní Moravu!

Noisy is the side guide bearing. Metal on metal. And yes, it's annoying. But it fit in a track switch or a crossing. A skate wheel won't fit.

the rear wheel need guide wheels too.
how does the rear wheel not slide off the track? i feel like if u shift your weight too suddenly or something u may slide the wheel off ?
Yes you can. Especially if his steering is not locked.
Wat if a train comes ?? This is dangerous and legal ??
this is the best design I've seen on the internet, the link for the plans isn't working anymore though
You do beautiful work but i dont understand why steel and not aluminum. Probly for strength. Its not too much material so maybe the weight is fine. I believe youre a great engineer. I dont understand why the back wheels stay on the tracks.
I think I would be using an electric bike on both ends , and making a box in the middle for the dog to ride along .

Em sealed bearings need some thick O Rings or something. GREAT project/Hobby Craft, just that sound would drive me CRAZY lol.

Hello and Thank Your very much 🙂
Hope your solve the noise problem, would ceramic bearings do the trick?
Not yet, but I'm considering.
Cool does it have to have two bikes or does it do good with one ?
One is enough. I hope so, haven't tried. But I suspect my son didn't tread much. 😀
Is there something in the design that locks the steering to keep the back wheel tracking?
No
Agreed. But they won't fit in the railroad switch.
