LYRICS: Eyes on the water, between the continents. This is Laurasia, it smells so different. A strong breeze blows out here. The ocean is pitch black. Let's not seek shelter. I wanna freeze and smell your neck. Soon everyone of us will be dead. In the great scheme of things it makes no difference. It's all the same. But let's not get sentimental... Eyes on the water, between the continents. This is Gondwana, it smells so different. A cold wind blows out here. The sea's already dead. Let's get in the water, let our bodies be the last. Feel the cold. Feel the night creep up to me. Let's stop and wait until we freeze together. And rest like this forever. Creep inside my bones, where you have lived since the day that we were born. Since the day that we were born. Sea level rise: we'll be among the 5%. We'll survive The Great Dying, there is no denying. You and me, the chosen few... because that's how we've got to know. And that's all we gotta know. I am not here but you can still write me, like in the beginning. You’re no longer next to me, but this is how it’s always been: you were a ghost before you became real. That’s how we got to know. That’s how we got to know. Now that you are not here. Now that we no longer talk. I can't stop to remember how you've been offended when you realized that I'd kill to relieve a load. Yes I'd kill to relieve a burden. Feel the cold creep inside. I am losing you to your fears, grown way out of scale. Yes it's true what they say: I don't love humanity... not a bit. But I do value empathy, while retaliating iniquities. Sea level rise: it's the beginning of The Great Dying. Soon it will be over. Long time to recover: 30 million years. Yes I'd kill to relieve the load. Yes I'd kill to relieve a burden. I am not here but you can still write me, like in the beginning. You’re no longer next to me, but this is how it’s always been: you were a ghost before you became real. That’s how we got to know. That’s how we got to know. Contemplating, trouble-making, even now... the air is getting hot and dry. Sticking to your skin and your open wounds. The sun burns us alive. That’s how we got to know. That’s how we got to know. That’s how we got to know.
@@ThirdfishThe singer is nuts. He crowd surfed twice. On the second time, he randomly handed me the microphone to hold as he climbed up onto the balcony of the overlooking second floor and I didn’t know what to do😂 then he dove into the crowd and landed on my head
I love how he sings "sea level rise: It's the beginning of The Great Dying Soon it will be over Long time to recover: *30 million years* " Gives me chills every time..
The review I read about this track spoke of the lyrics being like a monologue by the Earth to us. The mix of poetic yet frank, relatable terminology woven beautifully into the instrumentals in the final two thirds of it continue to captivate me, even on multiple listens. The cyclical nature of this track reminds me of the ebb and flow, and impending rise of the oceans, the cycles of our planet, and how insignificant we are in the great expanse of time - as highlighted by this passage of lyrics: Sea level rise It's the beginning of the Great Dying Soon it will be over Long time to recover 30 million years The moments of silence before a transitions from quiet to loud and vice versa are ingeniously structured such that you never quite know where the song is going next, even towards the crescendo at the very end. This musical device feels utterly appropriate: Our future is unknown.
I am listening (metal) music for 20 years. Not that kind of pose/entertaining metal. The true artistic and composition metal. And this track is the best one I ever heard. Without even thinking of it. I don`t need to think of it. I feel it in my bones and listening it with tears in my eyes. The ancestors that experienced this once. It`s written in me and everyone. Thanks to this track, and this band I`m feeling some beatiful and ancient feelings written in my DNA. Thank you The Ocean Collective.
The "what he said 'cause I ain't spelling that" chart is a diagram that shows the different time eras that the earth has gone through. Y'know, age of dinosaurs, ice ages, that kinda thing. The song talks about an extinction event that happened in the Paleozoic era (also the name of the album)
I love the way you guys layer your music into something that resembles two land masses crashing into each other, shaking the Earth to its core. Causing massive waves of hot, molten magma to shoot billions of light years into the universe in all directions, turning the very moon into a tiny star. You are everything good about music, and the emotion it can, and SHOULD, induce. Every album, nay, every song, is a metaphysical experience! Thank you for making music that truly is ART. EVERYTHING beautiful, horrific, and awe inspiring about life! Long Live The Ocean!!🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
How did it take me this long to realise my favourite song got a fullassed music video?? Fucking siiiick. Also: I think this might be the best song they've ever written
Its the best description of the dystopian earth I've seen in metal in the longest time. Poetic, grand, unforgiving, lull at times and full of mourning for a tender loss...almost like a dystopian anthem.
I have done exactly the same, but after a month of daily listening I need some palate cleansing, otherwise I will ruin my enjoyment for this badass album.
What a perfect clip to accompany the song. I love style, and I love how halfway through the colours change, from the cold grey (freeze) to red (heat, burns).
Literally almost everyday for 3 years. Along with most of their tracks on a weekly basis. I literally have to take full weeks of not listening to them just to explore new music so I don’t get carried away and burnt out lmao. Hasn’t happened yet though
I've always been interested in palaeontology, so the title drew me in. First time I heard the song my reaction was, meh. But I came back. And I've kept coming back again and again. Now months later I still keep coming back, and the song keeps getting better every time. The beginning and the end are chill-inducing!
That, my friend, perfectly illustrates what the best music does to us. It slowly grows inside of you, until you can’t remember what you felt, or even how you ever existed, before hearing it. Its power to invoke pure and raw emotion is what truly makes something ART!
Check out their other albums - 99% of their stuff is Earth-science based. They cronicle our understanding of the Earth/its history etc, chronologically through the various albums ...eg. Heliocentric was followed up by Anthropocentric - and speak of Ptolemy/what people used to belive about he world/universe etc. Is Science metal :D
How the song builds to the last two minutes, is just beautiful. The blending of vocals, and even the washing out of sound to inspire the intensity; few songs get this this ramped up.
Contemplating, trouble-making, even now... the air is getting hot and dry. Sticking to your skin and your open wounds. The sun burns us alive. That’s how we got to know. That’s how we got to know. That’s how we got to know
This is the only metal band that I have spent money on to get their music. Listened to the majority of the geologic time scale on the way home from a business trip
Definitely my favorite song from the album, and the visuals are beautiful. Actually fascinated me enough that I ended up reading a paleontology book on the Permian extinction event haha.
Can't stop listening to this album. Saw them on the Progfest tour in Australia last year. Didn't realise at the time what I was seeing, I just knew i needed to dig deeper. Stunning.
C'est toujours un vrai plaisir d'écouter The Ocean, j'ai eu la chance de les voir en première partie de LEPROUS... il y a un bon moment à Biarritz... Je prends beaucoup de plaisir à jouer ce son à la batterie... merci !
I cant´t get it from my head for at least a month...it is masterpiece in every possible way. The story telling...the monologue of the Earth to life, which she doesn´t really carre about. It is just the cycle, no matter what happened and what could happen.
What makes this 10000x better for me is that the lead singer looks just like my manager who is an actuary... Just makes me smile imagining him singing this! Awesome song!
Guys, I'm going to see you in a few days in Resurrection Fest but the organization kinda screw it because you are playing at the same hour as Slipknot. Quite angry and disappointed with them. Good video, btw.

Chills every time I listen to this song, especially live when I went to see them. One of the best bands around rn.
What I most love about this, is that the song and album themselves feel prehistoric. So damn well made and produced, what a beautiful band.
