  • lower nitrates with table sugar in saltwater aquarium. this is called carbon dosing. you are feeding anaerobic bacteria sugar, which increases the population of bacteria. this bacteria removes nitrates. sugar dosing to lower nitrates in reef aquarium. how to lower nitrates. feed your good bacteria with sugar in your reef tank. bacteria will populate and lower nitrates dramatically. you must have a protein skimmer for this procedure, which will remove the excess bacteria, taking the nitrates with them. dose 1 teaspoon sugar per 60 gallons per day. many see this as a bandaid but I say it is just another tool to control nitrates. you should of course find where your nitrates are spiking and correct it at the source. I suggest you use this to keep nitrates to a very low level after you have exhausted all other means: do not overstock your tank, clean mechanical filtration, and perform water changes. I perform a weekly 10% water change on my 75 gallon tank, have removed my foam block from the tank, and always run a protein skimmer. My nitrates have jumped to 20 ever since I added a new larger fish to the tank. That could be it. I also vacuum the sand bed thoroughly. I plan on upgrading to a much larger tank in the next year.

    This actually works. My tank was at 50ppm for the longest. Once I started to dose sugar I they took a nose dive. I'm currently at 10ppm. (3 weeks in)

      cool. make sure you feed your fish less and do water changes as well. replace your filter media once a week at least. it will take about 2 weeks but your nitrates will go down. if the water gets cloudy you're fine. it clears up in a day...you just dosed too much then.

    First off Mr. Rotter great subway video that looks like my hometown of Chicago ( yes inside the city limit) and I know you moved out a little west of Chicago. I love your series. I am going into salt/reef after three years of fresh water. Going from a 40 gal to 65 with sump and all. So every bit of info I can get I'm ingesting. But you make your videos not only informative but interesting as well. Thank you

      +Anita Nunley sure no problem. you caught me online. a skimmer is great to have and if you don't have one, you need to clean your mechanical filtration (sponges, etc. whatever is catching the waste) at least once a week. that will help out immensely!

      +The Casual Reefer it works great if you need to get the nitrates down faster than normal. mine are a little high and i'm looking at why. vacuuming sand bed, rinsing foam block in sump weekly, vacuuming sump weekly, and changing out sump sock every 3 days, and not overfeeding....still a bit high. at a loss currently. i'll find the source, but sugar is used to keep it stable.

    I tried this and in my case it was not very successfull. I had more success with vodka alone and kept doing that for a year. The best solution in my opinion is NOPOX from Redsea Combined with MarineGro 1 2 3.
    No matter how hard I stock the tank with 2 times a day feeding, the Nitrates has been undetecable so I highly recommend trying that out in case your Sugar experiment does not live up to the hype :)
    Another great video here Steve. Thanks for sharing and best of success to you :)

      StudioReef Thanks for taking the time to comment and for the tip! Would I need to get the MarineGro 1 2 3 or would the NOPOX work just fine alone? I will definitely try that out after this. I checked out your channel and subscribed...great stuff there! I saw in your profile video you have a studio? Very cool....me too. I'd like to learn more about that. www.rotterstudios.com is mine. ROTTER tube Thanks for subbing back :)
      About the MarineGro. it´s a ton of different live bacteria strains that takes any trace of Ammonia -> Nitrate in a flash. It even consists of some denitrifying bacteria aswell as where the Nopox from Redsea works fine by itself in the more traditional carbon dosing way. The 2 go great together and I have tested this on my tanks for the past year with amazing results. Marinegro is also one way you can cycle a brand new tank in a flash and it claims to be impossible to overdose.
      I do have a recording studio yes :) but I work fulltime as an Electrical Engineer now, so the music comes in as a hobby to me now. I used to live from playing and making Electronic stuff but like you I also play the guitar :)

      StudioReef Thanks for the fast response on the cool stuff. I was at a fish store today and couldn't find that stuff. I'll check out online but I will keep using the sugar to see what happens. So far, after 4 days, just more algae on the glass, which is to be expected.
      I hear you on the music stuff. I'm the same way. I play and record when I can, taking on clients and recording their demos and albums as they come along. I also do photography and video and have for years....which is where this UA-cam thing finally got me....that's how it works for me. Thanks for watching and glad you like it. I really hate the fact that I have to change water so often I don't want to do that so I'm trying to find the best alternative way to keep my nitrates level down. right now I only have invertebrates and life rocks so I want to get it ready for my fishes.

    • @ROTTERtube

      no more than 1 teaspoon a day. start with half a teaspoon each day for a week. you will see it drop. it is best to get nitrates down at the source but this method works great. if the water gets cloudy it is fine and will clear in half a day.

    I wanted to ask you that I lose about 1/3 to a gallon of water a day from evaporation. I was wondering since for the whole week I actually add 7 gallons of fresh water. Would that not be considered a water change because I remember mile high reefer said that he never water changes. Do nitrates evaporate with the water( I don't think so). The would still be exported through macro and skimmer right?

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  8 років тому

      +nammek a gallon a day loss? how big is your tank / sump? nitrates are not lost through evaporation, only water. water changes remove the solids and nitrates, which is why we do them. if you don't do water changes you need a great skimmer or mechanical filtration that is cleaned often. when i was using sump socks i would replace them every 3 days. canister filters should be cleaned weekly. any foam blocks, once or twice a week.

      +Rotter Tube Reef no I choose to go the nopox route over reactors and macro. macro never do well with me. always die and I didn't want to wait a month or so to see results from the biopellets as my nitrates were high and also didn't want to nuke my tank with them as I seen videos of ppl accidently do. I run gfo and purigen tho and all three works really well. I might go with the sugar dosing i get tired of buying nopox but I can manage buying this stuff every other month.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  8 років тому +1

      thanks for following up.It's just another form of carbon dosing but I wouldn't be against buying the nopox to have while dosing sugar. maybe use the nopox to get it down and keep it balanced and low with the sugar, who knows. i'll see how the bio pellets work for me. waiting for them to kick in. it's been almost 2 months and nothing. i seeded the tank with bacteria 2 weeks ago so in a couple more weeks i should be good. if not, i'm pulling it. then it will be carbon dosing only. tired of playing around. sugar rules. i got the nitrates from 80 to 20 in 1.5 weeks with sugar. it's lower than that now i'm sure.

You could start with 2 teaspoons and move to 3 each night. That is what I tried to get them down quicker...after about 2 weeks, 0 nitrates. You could use less, maybe 1 teaspoon a day, and take longer. It's up to you. When you use 1 teaspoon per 60 gallons water, your water will get a tad bit cloudy...it doesn't look bad, it's just not crystal clear. It will not harm your tank or fish or corals.

    Hi there
    I just wanna ask, dose you still using sugar dosing ??
    Dose it effect your coral or tank crush?
    Cause I heard from my local that will crush your tank soon or later
    Which that make me stop sugar dosing for awhile, and my no3 is climbing up to 50 ppm 😭😭
    Please do let me know the outcome of it

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  8 років тому +1

      +Kidtoro Lee i still dose it every other day to keep the nitrates low and prevent them from climbing. you also have to make sure you clean your tank well and rinse or replace and mechanical filtration twice a week depending on bio load. my tank has not crashed. you need to make sure you don't OD on the sugar since it lowers oxygen levels in the water. Don't dose more than 1 teaspoon per 60 gallons a day. A lot of people dose half this. You should ask the store if they sell bio pellet reactors and what they think of them...wait for their answer. bio pellet reactors do the same thing...carbon dosing. it doesn't harm corals or inverts. sugar feeds the bacteria needed to break down nitrates to gas.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  8 років тому +1

      +Kidtoro Lee you will be fine. you can use as little as you want. I don't recommend more than 1 teaspoon per 60 gallons a day. This is what works for me. A lot of people start with 1/4 teaspoon total per day. I would recommend starting slower, but I don't and my tank and corals are fine. The only thing you will notice is that your tank gets a little cloudy and your water from your protein skimmer smells more. This is normal. It means it is working. You need a protein skimmer for this.

I had to dose the display tank with prazi pro to kill it and now things are back to normal. the reason i stopped sugar is because you need to keep the protein skimmer going while dosing sugar and since all mechanical filtration had to be stopped while using prazi pro, well, there it is. i just started the skimmer up a week ago so i will have an update next weekend or so. thanks for asking and checking in! hope you are doing well also. i'm off to check out a new reef store. i may film there for you guys.....

    Hi there, watched you video the other day as well as others'. I have 4000 Lts Pond with 400 Lts Filter which i calculated roughly according your measurement in the US for the Sugar dose. I am in Australia. So i added about 2kg of sugar yesterday. the water become absolutely blur and dirty within the last 24 hours. The Nitrate has down from 160 to 10. so, the question is are my Kosi in danger with this dirty water? is my filter crashed? Please respond me asap. I am panicking. ..

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  8 років тому

      +Saru Nakarmi you should be fine if you calculated correctly. you should take it slow and not add the entire amount in at once. i have only used it in a reef aquarium with a protein skimmer. make sure you have enough aeration for the water. make sure there is enough oxygen in the water. the cloudiness is normal. it's the bacteria bloom due to the dosing. it will deplete some oxygen, which is why the water needs to be aerated or a protein skimmer needs to be used in the aquarium. don't add anymore. it will clear up.

    • @sarunakarmi4814

      ROTTER tube Reef Thank you sooo very much for your quick response. You are an angel. It was really bad. In fact, I noticed the black insects that stick on filter are dead. The fish did not seem very happy either this morning. which didn't seem right to me. So, I just changed the water and added new bacteria. Well, according to the calculation which says 4 table spoons for about 95lts. so it was around 1100 spoons for 4400 lt pond. I put about 1kg which did nothing at all. so i added another 1.2kg which. anyway, Thanks a lot again for the suggestion, will be careful next time. i am relieved a bit now that they seem happier. I am sure the bacteria will pick up its work again soon. please take care and have a lovely rest of the day.... it might be mid night there... lol...

      Hi again, sorry i have one more question for you if you don't mind :-). as you just mentioned before about the oxygen. Generally there is enough but as I went out, sew all the fish getting oxygen from the water fall, so definitely the sugar killed oxygen. Freaked me out. anyway, i have moved most fish into another pond for now. but must move them back in soon. So, if you know how long do you think it takes for the water to get back into normal. .... I thought changing water would lower the sugar level but it went back to same thing again... what disaster....!!

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  8 років тому

      +Saru Nakarmi i'm glad things are working out. it will not work right away, but over the course of a week or two. don't add more if you think it isn't working. 1 teaspoon per 60 gallons max, per day. that is what works for me in my reef tank. some suggest less by half the amount. thank you for your kind words. i'm sure it was midnight or something.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  8 років тому

      +Saru Nakarmi you probably added too much too soon. then you added more. what percent of water did you change? do you have a pump or something you can put in the water that adds oxygen, that will break up the surface of the water to add oxygen? bigger the better. if not, what do you normally use to add oxygen, or is there nothing that you use? within a day or 2 my tank goes back to normal. once the water clears up that is a sign it is getting back to normal. the more oxygenation you can do the faster it will clear up. we're probably talking about a day.

    you give a reason, but why do you need a protein skimmer? the dead bacteria isn't going to release nitrates bc when they were alive they metabolized the nitrate and phosphate into something completely different; into elemental nitrogen which leaves the aquarium as a gas.
    is it to remove the excess bacteria so the tank doesnt look dirty? but couldnt you you just use a smaller amount of sugar to limit the population of the bacteria

      +Ashley L Hi Ashley, thanks for stopping by! I use 2 teaspoons a day in my 125 gallon tank so that's why I recommend 1 teaspoon per 60 gallons. More or less won't hurt. So yes, 2 teaspoons is good for you, or 1.5, daily. How long have you had your tank? Is it cycled? Also, how many fish did you add at once? If you got a spike, the tank probably isn't ready to handle all the new fish. You can try buying bacteria. It won't hurt, but sometimes it just doesn't work...it can die off in the bottle. Sugar is great for keeping it under control quick, but, try to find out why it's spiking in the first place. Either the tank is too new or there are too many fish too soon...too much waste and uneaten food and ammonia...fish pee.

    • @TheAshberry3
      @TheAshberry3 9 років тому

      Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, my tank is fully cycled and about 6 months old. It has around 140lbs of live rock in it. I moved almost everything from my old tank into it as well, so a lot of the material inside has been going for quite some time. I usually add bacteria with water changes or if I add new fish, but have ran a little behind lately:/ I placed a big order, I added 3 green chromis (tiny sized), a blue throat triggerfish ( around 3 in), a small yellowhead jawfish, and a foxface to the tank at once. Most of the fish are pretty small, aside from the foxface who is around 4in. I just bought a "extra" canister filter with a uv sterilizer and added it last week, so hopefully that will help as well. I lost my pulsing xenia and torch coral last week and now a Kenya tree is suddenly drooping..I believe I will try the sugar trick! I had used red sea's no pox in the past, but this just seems safer and faster. When I used the no pox around a year ago it seemed to take a couple of months before I got any good results..I don't think my corals could last that long waiting for it. My nitrates are only around 40 now, but I realize that is way too high now that I have coral.. I have never kept coral before, so I am a bit of a newbie to all of this. Thank you so much for all the help!! :)

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  9 років тому +1

      You may be ok with those fish being added. You don't need to add bacteria with each water change. It's a waste of money. Since you're into it for awhile, you should have plenty on the rocks and the sand and the glass and in your sump. It's not necessary. Please make sure you are on top of cleaning your canister filter and all mechanical filtration! Canister filters are nitrate factories. They must be cleaned often! If I had one I would do it once a week minimum. I like to run as basic as possible. I run a sump sock and protein skimmer and that is it. I have a foam block too, which I clean weekly. The socks are replaced every 3 days. I vacuum the sump with a weekly 10 gallon water change. Also vacuum your sand! I have a cool video on that.

    • @TheAshberry3
      @TheAshberry3 9 років тому +1

      Woah, just saw your comment back lol. Sorry about that. I actually was having a custom sump built for me and then found that the way my cabinets are set up on the stand underneath my tank will not allow enough room for it to fit:/ So, I invested in two very strong canister filters. It wasn't ideal for me either, I would love to have a sump, but it just wasn't in the cards for me right now. I already watched your video on vacuuming actually lol, it was very helpful as well! It's nice to have a sense of community on here with the hobby that is everyone helping each other out and giving helpful advice on everything! The water changes I have been doing are absolutely ridiculous trying to get these nitrates down..but they kept going up. Today when I tested my nitrates are at 80ppm.. my torch coral and pulsing xenias are no more. There was something not right, so I contacted my water company and learned that they had recently got in trouble by the EPA for having super high nitrate levels..so when I was doing water changes to get my nitrates down I was only adding to the problem. What would you suggest I do about this? I got a bigger protein skimmer and started sugar dosing 2tsp today..I just wonder if I will have to dose everyday forever with this going on with my water having high nitrates from the faucet.

    Hey Rotter, how you been doing? Are you still sugar dosing or have you gone another route? I'll soon have my 300 gallon ready hopefully by feb 2018. I bought this aquarium about a month before you made this video around feb 2015. I still have no water in it because I've been collecting the gear (toys) to operate it since then lol but its really starting to take shape and looking good. So it will be 3 years by feb 2018 and hope to have it running by then. I use 6 teaspoons of sugar in my coffee and I think that's about what mine is going to take including the water in the sump = 380 gallons lol. But is there a chart for building up to that? I don't just start putting that much sugar in from the get go do I? Also, when is a good time to start dosing, when you first start cycling or after how many weeks? And yes I have a great skimmer I'll be using.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  7 років тому +1

      Hey Robert, can't wait to see that tank! you may never have to carbon dose. the trick is to keep the tank really clean via vacuuming sand, water changes, changing out media, etc etc. after all that, my nitrates are still high since i choose to have a lot of fish in my tank. what works best is 1 teaspoon for every 60 gallons. you can work up to that over the course of a couple weeks IF YOU NEED TO SUGAR DOSE AT ALL. as a tip, when you get sand, STAY AWAY FROM CRUSHED CORAL! that holds food and waste....NITRATES!

      Hi Ian, that bioload is small. How often are you cleaning out the canister filter? It should be weekly. Do you vacuum your sand? That could be another reason. If you are using crushed coral for your sand, that is another reason. vacuum your sump as well. I don't know how much for liters but if you dose 1 teaspoon of table sugar for every 60 gallons, daily, you will have 0 nitrates in 2 weeks. Do this gradually over the course of a month. You need to have your protein skimmer running while you do this.

      @ROTTERtube  2 роки тому

      you need a protein skimmer for it to work properly. A protein skimmer removes all the bad stuff after dosing sugar. For a tank that small, it's much better if you do larger water changes....which will be very easy with a 7 gallon tank. At least 50% water change weekly.

    one ? i tested the nitrate and it was 40 ppm then 3 days later i did a remodel inside the reef moving rock and a lot of moving sand i had 12 fish in a 75 tank also took 4 fish out and now have 8 fish and let every thing sit for a day later test the nitrate am at - + 140 ppm just wondering what happen if i took fish out or bc i move things around? ps little feeding 20 sec of food for fish to consume .

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  7 років тому

      if you removed some rock you also removed some bacteria from the tank. you also stirred things up. if you stirred the sand up, that's another reason. make sure you're changing your filter media often. at least once a week but if you have more fish or high nitrates, every 3 days. vacuum your sandbed. do more water changes. not sure how often you have done them. make sure you have a protein skimmer and it's running very well. clean stuff. vacuum your overflows out. clean your sump. these are all things that will help you. sounds like you aren't doing something enough......maybe not cleaning enough, to have the high nitrates. if you do all this, you could try carbon dosing with sugar or vodka or white vinegar. also don't know how large your fish are. if you have large fish in there, they are producing a lot of waste, which is contributing to your issue.

    Hmm...I realize this is old now, but I thought carbon dosing (like grenadine or vodka) fed anaerobic bacteria that convert nitrates into nitrogen gas, completing the nitrogen cycle. I think the notion that the protein skimmer removes bacteria containing nitrates or the nitrates go back in the water if/when the bacteria dies is just wrong.

      it's not wrong. read up on it. when a human body dies, it releases toxins from all orifices including the pores.

    Dosing carbon... less is more for sure when starting. Most people unless using a deep sand bed will be very limited in anoxic bacteria. But carbon dosing is a must. The main reason most tanks have low Anoxic bacteria is because there just isn’t enough food to feed them. Protein skimmers are not required for this at all lol.. that makes no sense.. removing excessive nutrients has nothing to do with feeding bacteria that breath nitrate. Carbon dosing is for no other reason then feeding anoxic bacteria. By the time water gets to an anoxic zone in your filtration or tank usually the aerobic bacteria have already consumed most of the food source. So adding in carbon give a greater food supply. Many have the misunderstanding that the bacteria feed off the nitrogen components.. the reality is they breath it in and eat carbon. Honestly the single best thing anyone can do is stop vacuuming your substrate. All you are doing is removing carbon so you then have to dose carbon in other forms to make up the difference of what you’ve removed. You tank is a self sustaining eco system.. all it really needs from you is circulation, light and aeration. The tank will do the rest. I can’t believe how many people I see removing diatoms from their sand.. that is the beginning of sand cycling. That’s the equivalent of washing bio media in bleach! Leave your tank alone and it will go through phases and eventually balance itself. Like bacterial blooms in a new tank... now a days everyone runs to the store buys a uv to clean up the bloom.. what they don’t realize is they are killing B.B. in the water column while they are looking for a h9me in your tank.. 90% of tanks don’t even need filters or sumps... they just need to be left alone.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  6 років тому

      dude, when the anaerobic bacteria die, where do you think all those nitrates are going to go?! BACK INTO YOUR WATER! the protein skimmers takes care of this by removing from your tank. it's reef tank 101.

    • @fishrrelaxing9361
      @fishrrelaxing9361 6 років тому

      Rotter Tube Reef dead bacteria are consumed by worms, snails, etc it’s biology 101. Once everyone stops thinking of their tanks as a tank and starts thinking of it as a full cycle eco system they will come to realize all that fancy equipment and media purchased over the years was a waste of money when all that was needed was proper live rock and live sand. Many tank keeping concepts are backwards. The biggest one being water turnover of 6x-10x that many strive for. The most successful tanks I’ve come across run 1/2 turnover with good aeration and circulation. You need dwell time to filter water which makes fast flow counter intuitive to proper filtration. Skimming proteins is yet another counter intuitive concept. You are doing nothing but removing food source and preventing micro and macro organisms from reproducing to a high enough level to self sustain and full cycle a tank. The only reason a skimmer would be needed is to help for the first 1-2 years of a tank while the eco system seeds and populates. During this time you should be slowly reducing skimming and eventually it won’t be needed at all. The last major no no that is again tank keeping 101.. cleaning substrate. Just like skimming you are doing nothing but removing food and carbon for micro and macro organisms. Nature solved all these issues millions of years ago. I’m not sure why people want to reinvent the wheel? Most of these problems we are self creating then having to buy things to correct them which is nothing more then a crutch preventing nature from doing its job. Yeah a tank won’t look visually appealing for the first couple years.. but it will properly correct itself in time and need nothing more then water top offs and circulation. Don’t take my word for it.. there is a reefing club/group in San Francisco area that keeps tanks exactly like this. They have nothing external to their tanks. They light their tanks mostly with sunlight by windows, have no sumps or other external filtration and have just a couple powerheads for moving the water around the tank and aerating it. There isn’t even the need to feed. It’s a complete self sustaining system. The only thing needed to be occasionally added is some minerals because it’s a closed loop and no way for new minerals to be introduced.

      @@ROTTERtube Right on! I have an older deep sand bed with a depth of 4". I used CaribSea aragalive oolite Fiji pink with just a bit courser grain dressed on top. All kinds of worms and microfuana. Worked great while it lasted.
      Unfortunately, after some equipment failing and fish dying. I took a break from the hobby, just running a fishless lights off aquarium on a canister filter. Perhaps that caused much of the fauna to deplete. I dont see all the worm tracks nearly as much. Do you know if there's a way to reseed live sand with all those beneficial critters? Or is it better if I rebuild with new sand, saving all the water minus 20% with old sand. I need to move the tank to the living room anyways but this is my dilemma.
      Sugar dosing does help, but I haven't gotten to the point where its within parameters. Then thinking... does a DSB eventually get old and need to be changed? no signs of abnormal black or decay even underneath the tank. Do you know if new live sand cause a cycle?

I know some people run it all day and it even gets rid of ich in you tank. The powder is very cost effective. I only run it after I feed my fish for about 2 hours and sometimes longer. I thought my corals were being bleached but I found out my starfish was eating them. I also wanted to know how long it took for your nitrates to come down through sugar dosing.
