- The UK has become the world's fourth largest defence spender, according to new analysis of global military power.
A year ago, it was sixth in the rankings, according to the annual ‘Military Balance’ study by the International Institute For Strategic Studies.
It says the world as a whole increased its defence spending to over £1.3 trillion last year, despite the economic turmoil of COVID-19, but the authors warn of a ‘day of reckoning’ ahead.

Increase budget to 3% of GDP,
2019 GDP was $2.829 trillion (Source: World Bank)
3% of the 2019 GDP would be $84.8 billion, that would make us the 3rd largest spender, roughly $20 billion more than India. 3% would be a substantial amount to keep a strong Navy, Army and Air force, right now our current budget of around 2% is spread too thin meaning we cant fund all 3 branches enough, with a 3% of GDP being spent we could do that.
That would be great!

Surprisingly only during times of war has British defence spending rocketed. Even at the peak of the empire the British army as an example was small. Only during the likes of the Boer wars and both world wars did defence spending rocket including large increases in the British army. Examples can be found here on UA-cam.

We need to rely alone and move away from relying on the US, I’d buy another trident submarine in the new batch called dreadnought so we could have 2 trident armed subs out at a time, we also need a big recruitment drive, too less personnel for the 4th largest defence spender. Happy to hear it. Need to increase the Army and navy numbers.
We just need to keep manpower up and it’s remarkable how at the moment we have the smallest military in our nation’s history but have the largest available manpower pool ever. We need to push the ones who don’t do so well in school and may face turning to crime into a good discipline like the military.
You clearly don’t understand the military.
We also have fewer bayonets and horses now. We live in a time of modern warfare, we have things like aircraft carriers, drones, precision guided missiles. We don't need as many troops as in the past
Bring in mandatory service like finland etc
@Kordell Swoffer thats a good point to be honest it works in finland because of their history and having russia next to them whereas currently the uk population generally dont have the right attitude but still if we do it like finland does its sott of a win win as young ones learn good skills etc and the army gets more men and some will stay one and since it will be every year etc there will br a constant steady increase then the economy itself might see a increase in income from better work ethic etc and a gnerally healthier population

Spending versus capability are two different things .The UK armed forces are tiny .
The UK military must take quality over quantity unless if it wants to issue the draft again.
@@kamanashiskar9203 You need manpower which the UK armed forces lack as well as investment .The defence cuts have been too deep.
@@kamanashiskar9203 Its a myth that UK will retain a qualitative edge over the top 3 spenders on this list. The gap has already disappeared in multiple areas.
The infantry always has a big target on its back when it comes to defence cuts 😢 but I remember what my instructor one said “ you can bomb and shell A city into ruins but in the end, a infantry soldier is still going to have to go in, crawl on his belt buckle to the centre and then stand up look around and say all clear”
We spend money but get nothing for it. Equipment is flawed by penny pinching due to changing policy or financial circumstance. Orders announced today are later cut to nothing by a change of leadership while systems are retired before replacements are available. Manpower is either cut or encouraged to leave by poor working conditions.
Increase military size create more jobs
And more regiments = jobs 👍
there are better ways to create jobs
OK so the Chinese navy can be in more places at the same time , but the US navy displaces more water.
The USSR has a similar population to the US, so the US being richer allowed it to spend more. China has around 4x the population even poorer it can compete and it's catching up.
@@davidhouseman4328 "The USSR has a similar population to the US " you might want to check that.

Good. And strengthen defence ties with Aust/NZ, and put pressure on their governments to go up 1% budget spending.
Australia spends 2%, NZ 1.1%.
Auz is ramping up defence spending & capabilities, being very aware of the threat of China in that region.
@@2bingtim Too late and not enough. Deterrence is everything.
Why do they want to cut man power when there buying new equipment someone’s got to use the equipment?
There is an awful lot of old equipment that needs to be replaced. No need to have manpower if you still dont have modern equipment to go round in the first place.
@@BoarVessel-BCEtruscanCer-xy7et Hence why you surplus the old equipment to offset costs of newer equipment. Despite the BS gun control the UK and Europe have. The people can still buy everything else.
This is why it's called phasing out equipment. It takes time so you prioritize the units that need it most and who can field test it. The US has been doing that for decades if not centuries. That said, the UK has been gradually cutting it's army for decades and at the rate they are going, they won't have enough manpower to cycle out crews on their warships.
Don't worry Russia spent 70 years trying be to out spend the USA didn't work did it .
And now America is dying and in civil unrest. So your point is? Russia has been around for heaps longer. Russia will still be around when America gets wiped off the planet.
@@bh8671 The current Russian state has been around since the 1990s mate, Soviet Russia was around since the 1900s, the US as a state is much more "stable" and has been around a lot longer.
@@HistoryHeadChannel Yup
Let Europe and the USA have large armies. Churchill was right and so have past generations, we need a large navy to defend our interests. We depend on it. It’s vital.
Up to 3rd now.
Probably be back to 4th seen as Germany is going to spend 150 billion on defence
We still need to spend more. People don't appreciate the armed forces until they need them.
Indian military pride of india 🇮🇳
Your defence budget is only slightly larger than that of the UK but you have a population over 15 x larger than that of the UK. Your budget is a joke.
India would be crushed by the UK.

British loooted trillions of dollars ,we are rising from ashes .
@@mrdarren1045 nice ioke .
At the same time between 2019 and 2020 the U.S increased its military budget by almost the same amount as the entire UK defence budget!
The USA spends more on defence than the next ten highest defence spenders combined, including China, Russia and the UK.
It's the Modern weaponry and Vehicles,Ships etc that makes it great and hit way above it's Level, The UK is the "KHABIB" or "GSP" of the UFC, not heavyweights but Incredible fighter skills!
Whilst China, India, US, Europe etc build up more capacity - UK spends money on drones in hope that soldiers will not be needed.
When the technology ceases to work or cannot dominate the ground - soldiers and marines will still be needed to go in and secure it.
Will we have enough remaining...?
What makes you think China and India aren't spending on drones and tech just as they are spending on large body of troops? I've done some analysis of what the Brits plan to field technologically and frankly, its comparable to what India plans to field or is fielding. Obviously UK still has better SSN, SSBN, MBT and fighters (F-35) than India or China. But not much beyond that. Artillery, Infantry, Heptrs, Destroyers, Frigates, Air Defences, India and China are deploying more technologically advanced systems. The myth that UK has better equipment will soon be busted as well.
So many people here have no idea how modern warfare is about technology, not the number of soldiers and tanks.
Haha
@Kordell Swoffer so you think its about numbers? oke
Even more people don't realize that UK's tech edge has almost completely evaporated and they are beginning to lag, barely keeping afloat thanks to tech collaborations with Europe and USA.
this is good although ill be honest when i look at our numbers its kinda depressing .. in my head i play a scenario of what if U.S and China go into conflict because of things they believe (both want to be super power and believe in different things ironic since in ww2 they were close allies) what if (i'm not saying it will putin says things i like sometimes says things i dont like cant make my mind on him sometimes he sounds for peace sometime he sounds like he is toying with the idea) but what if he was to attack while U.S and china are busy i feel we could be much better prepared even if its a bit over kill what we need surely its better to be prepared than under prepared and fighting just to survive and trying to play catchup (since a lot of our factory work etc is mostly abroad now).
You mean attack budget right?
India has a space programme, nuclear weapons and spends more on it's defence than Britain, yet Britain gives aid to India. Just let that sink in.
and India invests Billions of Dollars into Uk generating huge employment in the country. Not that India can actually do something productive with a few million $ of Aid, but the relation helps Uk sustain its economy. lol
Plus the aid money they spend can only be spent on British made stuff, so it ends up back into our economy anyway
You obviously have no idea what 'aid' is.
@@Alex-ni2ir
