My name is Joe Penny. I have been an actor for over 40 years...Holly Powell is putting out some very important information here..Holly's Presentation is excellent..simple..clear, not confusing, therefore making it very easy to grasp. The clip I found that left me saying YES!!! YES!! YES!! to was her segment on what to do in an audition. I would call it the do's and don'ts ..Thought it was superb!!! Especially for young actors starting out!! WELL DONE MS POWELL!!!

Joe you're not going to believe this but last night I watched you crush your scenes on Sopranos! It was the first time I'd seen your work and I called my gf into the living room to show her your scene at the bar when Victor Musto confronts David Scatino (Robert Patrick). Epic. Thank you so much.

Joe Penny --actor for over 40 years..I have made comments before--and no I do not know Holly Powell. never met the lady. With that said..I have now seen Ms Powell's other you tube pieces on the plight of the actor..specifically her you tube videos on how to approach a cold reading..how to blow them away with your reading..how to present yourself to the casting..producers etc..who may be in the room.. and what most actors especially beginners need to learn and be aware of--NO WHEN THE MEETING IS OVER!!!! Do not dilly dally after your reading with small talk you can irritate them and very possibly loose the job....Look for their verbal Q's like ...That was great thank you so much for coming in..etc..etc etc..when you hear these Q's..they are telling you the meeting is over..Thank them for there time..( very nicely of course) and get out of dodge.!! On to the next audition..The for mentioned Ms Powell has talk about this in the videos I have now seen. I heard Ms Powell say something that also was right on the money..being in so many casting sessions myself over they years..I know this to be a HUGE DEAL!!!!
ACTORS--Many times your 8x10 is the first thing they see especially if your a beginner and do not have film on yourself..also if your not a beginner and don't have film on yourself ( a reel )..every situation is a little different I Know...My POINT IS THE FOLLOWING!--When you go into the casting office your 8x10 picture should look just like you...not an over digital --touch-up version of you..IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE YOU!!!! I felt compelled to add a comment tonight because 40 years of experience..Well let's just say I've seen a few things. There are some really good acting coaches out there..and of course there are those who are not so good...they can hurt an actor who's just starting out..meaning you can be taught some bad habits...
Holly Powell is an excellent one...she's teaching the real stuff..the what really happens stuff...Again I say--WELL DONE HOLLY POWELL

Thank you very much for posting this, I really needed this to handle my nerves. Going into acting and everything seems so big, but these videos really help put me in the realm that I haven't faced yet. I feel much better after watching this.

I wish I'd watched this before my pilot audition on yesterday. I had an audition for a sitcom and I was trying to make my character into what I was told by sitcom gurus here in Hollywood what her type would be. This is why it feels so Foreign to me.

Madam your lessons are great but can you tell from beginning , how and where we can sign in for an audition , what is recruited for it , and even if we are accepted for an audition what will happen next?

Black girl definitely seemed to fit the character more - temperamental and a lil crazy.

The goal of an actor is to be as conversational as possible with a written script as you are when speaking to someone in a real life situation. Overacting happens when an actor tries too hard, speaking louder and emphasizing every word spoken. It happens when an actor isn't paying attention to what they are actually saying...worried only about getting the lines right. The tricky part comes in with the "tone" of the script, comedy or drama, and whether it is a stage play with an audience or on camera for a film. If a stage play, of course the audience has to hear you, so of course you need to speak louder. And your gestures will be larger. But, think of it as just needing to be heard, as if you were talking to someone who is standing at the other end of a big room. If on camera, you don't need to be loud to be heard because the camera is close to you and microphones are picking up your voice. And the actors you are doing the scenes with are standing close to you. So just speaking in a natural conversational way is enough. And a lot of movement and big gestures are not needed. Hope that helps a bit.
