Go check out this big band called “central Washington university jazz band 1” they do two renditions of Skylark, one with their lead alto Lucas Simpson and another with Dick Oats as a guest artist. I won’t bias you with my opinion but you tell me which of the two had a better set of that same chart when you’re done.
Heck while my mind is moving, cwu jazz band 1 also did one finger snap, again with Lucas Simpson lead alto taking a solo…you tell me which alto did the best over this chart when you’re done. Also, not only for comparison sake but genuinely I think you’d love CWU ‘s arrangement of one finger snap they did their thing with that tune
@@lennyappleton2840 I thought Oatts sounded beautiful on that recording, and Simpson sounded great as well. Would probably prefer oatts just because of the maturity he can play a ballad with. Not that the other guy can’t, its just with age comes experience. Its hard for us young cats to play ballads because our minds are all over the place. I would much rather hear veteran cats play ballads. In my original comment, I was talking about uptempo playing, which is a whole nother thing

Excellent solos by Terell and Emmet. Never forget how great Freddie and Herbie were.
The interaction between Emmet and Kyle during his solo... so intense! And then a killer drum solo too! OH man what a band.
This band is one of the best I heard from Emment's collection of top musicians. Dick Oattts and Terell Stafford are playing so well - and their solos are just plain grooving & "hip" - Kyle Poole and of course Peter Washington ...so relaxed and happening! (Pete Magadini)

They just went a little looser/freer w/the rhythm n time signature
