- DMVPN Explained | VPN Tunnels Part 4
GRE is fantastic, but lacks the scalability needed for a large network. Point to point tunnels require a lot of effort, and are complex to maintain and troubleshoot.
DMVPN on the other hand, does not need point to point tunnels. It uses multipoint GRE to lower the overhead. Additionally, it will dynamically allow spoke routers to register themselves with the hub routers.
This relies heavily on NHRP (Next Hop Resolution Protocol). NHRP finds efficient paths through NBMA (Non-Broadcast Multi-Access) networks. It works with DMVPN by controlling the registration process.
Over time, DMVPN has been improved on. Phase-1 is the original type of DMVPN. It’s simpler to understand, so we’re starting with it here in this video.
In the next video, we’re looking at Phase-2 and Phase-3, and how they are used to improve DMVPN.

I just hope you already know how invaluable your works are here on this channel.
Keep the great job up.
Thanks, that's really nice of you to say
Just watched parts 1 and 2. You answered my main question which was about spoke to spoke traffic. I don't get time on the routers so it's nice to see all the steps involved. Great job!
Thanks for watching! Glad it was helpful!
Great help! The illustrations and basic animations are great enough to understand the concept ! I recommend this video to others :)
Great explanation have been preparing for my ccnp and.. got many doubts cleared..kudos.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You did a great job in explaining the way it can be understand easily.
wow very useful, i was trying to learn the same since 2-3 days and I can now learn it finally in 10 mins!!
PLEASE KEEP RELEASING CONTENT LIKE THIS IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A VIDEO LIKE THIS FOR WEEKS
Glad to help

You're welcome! Thanks for your kind words
Love this channel. Nicely done.
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback!
Nice explanation
Wow your way of explaining is Awesome Brother, to the point with commands examples, you just cleared the doubts, Just Subscribed 😊 Thank you very much!!
you're very welcome!
Thanks for this great video on DMVPN!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is awesome
Thank you boss man.
Thank you, great series :)
Thank you!
Excellent video. Congrats!
Thank you!
LOL i like the plants and the moon thrown in there for aesthetics
Trying to keep it interesting 😀
Have you configure a dual dmvpn setup?
And btw, what about the LANs behind the spokes and the hub?
Will they be part of the next videos on other versions of DMVPN?
Yes, we will touch on these in video #2, especially when we talk about phase 3 and shortcut routes.
We'll have a special video on routing with DMVPN in the future (but I haven't written it yet).
Your doing great work.
Are you using VIRL?
Yes, this one is done in VIRL. Other platforms like gns and eve should be fine too
thanks for tutorial
one question if we need configure dmvpn or vpn we need certificate
If you configure IPSec, you may need a certificate. GRE and DMVPN are for the tunnel, and are not encrypted by default. Adding IPSec encrypts the traffic.
They support using PSK and certificates for authentication. So, yes, you could use a certificate in this case if you want to.
@@NetworkDirection thanks for answer? how i could find certificate for IPSec
You would need to generate one. You could get a free certificate from someone like letsencrypt.org/
Why did you configure tunnel destination to hub explicitly on Spoke-2?
that's the way it works. The spokes have to know where to find the hubs.
The hubs don't need to know about the spokes, as the spokes will find them and register themselves
I don’t understand what’s the difference between spoke and normal router also what’s a hub router?I really would appreciate if someone could help
These are DMVPN terms.
A hub router is a router that other routers connect to.
Spoke routers connect to the hub router
If you drew a picture of what it would look like, you would have something looking like a star or flower. The hub router is in the middle, with spoke routers connecting to it
How I can do that in a real environment?
Waiting for phase 2&3 video
Still working on phase 2/3. It should be out in about a week.
