  • After fighting all season long the Seattle Mariners will unfortunately come up short in the 2023 regular season. With their path to the playoffs clear the Mariners could not get the job done and clinch a playoff berth for the second year in a row. A long offseason awaits us.

    The Sonics have been to the playoffs more times than the Mariners and they haven’t existed in 15 years. Let that sink in…
    Sonics (1967-2008): 22 playoff appearances
    Mariners (1977-present): 5 playoff appearances

      The wild card with 2 teams didn't even start until the 2000's. There's been teams that have won over 100 games and still missed the playoffs in the MLB. They didn't even introduce the 3 team wild card until recently and Seattle wouldn't have made the playoffs in 2022 without it. Meanwhile 8 teams in each NBA conference make it. You could have a losing record and still make the playoffs in the NBA

      And comparing Seattle a mid to low market team for the first 20-30 years of existence to the yankees dodgers and Red Sox the 3 teams with the largest payrolls is insane. You can't just put numbers side by side with the best teams of that era and call Seattle the worst when there's been way more dysfunctional baseball organizations now and in history than Seattle.
      Like I could pull up a struggling NFL team and compare them to the 90's cowboys or 80's 9ers and come to the conclusion that they're the worst because of that but why would I compare a team to the best teams of all time and call them the worst it doesn't make sense when there's obviously been way worse teams and longer droughts

    After watching all the mariners games this season, it's hard to not recognize how bad Scott Servais really was at making decisions regarding bullpen choices and pinch hitting. We lost at least 16 games solely based off of that. Nitpicking aside, our bullpen got worse after the deadline. Offense is boom or bust, and that's just not sustainable. We need a big signing this off-season. We can't waste our talented core by not upgrading a few spots. Their window is now.

    • @jefffinkbonner9551
      @jefffinkbonner9551 Рік тому +2

      Exactly. I used to think that Rooftop guy was harsh in constantly criticizing Scott Servais’ decision making, but he’s absolutely spot on. Rojas and Canzone were nice acquisitions on their own, but not necessarily worth loosing the most solid bullpen piece that couldn’t adequately be replaced. The holes that Rojas and Canzone filled were ones that they should’ve had filled by opening day, not after wasting half a season middling at 500.

    It feels this season has been a massive disappointment. To heck with it, this team has been worse than the 2021 M’s. This is for a couple reasons.
    1. They went cheap in the offseason
    2. They forgot how to be clutch
    3. The pitching is thin in depth
    4. This team couldn’t find its rhythm until August, and became exhausted in the last 10 games
    5. The AL got a lot better this year
    Feels like a punch in the gut. Simply an above average team, not a Playoff Team. Please don’t take 20 years to make it again.

    two biggest problem IMHO is the front office being more worried about year under contract then quality players (no disrespect to Canzone and Rojas) but trading your closer just because you only had him under control for a season and a half was stupid. It set us up with no experienced closer. Then add Scott Servies 's poor game management, baseball is situational but you also have to look at the quality of your team and play the best players on any given night. And I will also call out the players themselves for not playing up to their potential. after August they seem to have gotten to relaxed until they were backed into the corner then pressed to much, too many swings at bad pitches especially early in the count cost them big time.

Frankly, the Mariners had a better team last year. I expected them to make some moves to improve their position this year, but that didn't seem to happen. Both the Rangers and Astros made some key changes at the end and it paid off. Astros would not be in the playoffs if they hadn't gotten Verlander. I like the front three of JP, Julio, and Cal. Other than that though, and maybe Teoscar, I think everyone else can/should be replaced or swtitched up. Ty hasn't had a great season and seems to be the exact opposite of clutch. He went what, like 2 months without a homer? And Geno isnt the power hitter he was two years ago. I love the squad and the chemistry they have, but its time to pay for a few big bats.
    Any thoughts?

      Ty was one of Jerry's better bargain bin moves and shouldn't be thought of as a perennial All-Star candidate like some seem to do, and we got lucky with Geno (Winker was the big piece in that trade). Pitching shouldn't be hard to figure out once all the injuries heal, but it's time to stop treating this like 2021 (that Sewald trade still ticks me off) and sign+trade for impact instead of value.
      As for Teo, don't expect him to stay. The FO did him dirty in his 2023 arbitration, they may as well have directly told him he was a rental. Frankly we ought to expect them to just plug in Kelenic & Canzone so we're pleasantly surprised at any bats they happen to acquire, but then again now's the time to move people like Trammell & France, so who knows.

      "Teo is a great move and i hope we keep him around" don't expect it, the FO did him dirty in his 2023 arbitration and I doubt this season gave him faith in them for the coming years. Can't blame them for Wong's implosion though, hopefully between Rojas & Caballero we don't have to do much to sort out 2B and can focus on getting pure bats.

    For all the times I was mad at Scott Servais this year for mismanaging big situations, I kinda wonder to what extent Dipoto is the one making a lot of those calls. Didn't even think of this until Locked On guys talked about it, but if he gets fired or his position within the organization changes, he'll be a scapegoat. I hope all the players take this offseason seriously and go train like JP did. Firing Scott, while def on the table, won't solve much imo.

    Pain......

  • @Dman425
    @Dman425 Рік тому

    The starting pitching was overall exhausted. Remember we lost 2 starting pitchers from last year. Which means the relievers are tired also. 2 of their starting pitchers could of helped in the bullpen this year.
    And, I will defend Dipoto forever for not signing any of those top free agents who had a descent seasons. But, they wouldn’t of made much of a difference this year.
    Yes, you can nitpick and pick whoever you want that overproduced this year like JD Martinez. But, if you look at the numbers for both Pollock and JD Martinez last year, they were very similar. There isn’t one person or GM who thought he would do what he did this year. He seemed to be declining.
    The same goes for Wong. He was at best signed as someone who will be a decent 7th or 8th hitter in a lineup. The good news with both of those guys is, they were inexpensive and they aren’t stuck with them forever like some teams like Texas will have with some of those guys(whose skills will eventually start declining in a few years).
    This really comes down to the economics of MLB. It’s a mess. It’s been a mess for 30 years! They didn’t implement or a salary minimum or a salary cap for teams. So, owners can do whatever they want with THEIR team. People seem to forget that they can do whatever they want with THEIR business. If you don’t like how they operate THEIR business, go find another team to root for! Us whining and complaining that ownership isn’t willing to go balls out on payroll isn’t going to change that. It is what it is. You gotta work with what you are given in life, right?

    In the end, this season is entirely on the ownerships failure to address glaring offensive needs in the off-season. Changes are needed, but what changes will Stanton be willing to make? Servais will more than likely be the sacrificial lamb, justifiable, perhaps. The manager’s position is only the tip of the iceberg that is dooming this franchise.
