It took 3/4 years and several battles with each other and against each other to finally open up their feelings for each other. They are more then best friends for life, they are brothers not of blood but for life.
@Niceguy yes, even without naruto being hokage. i would have also been fine with them both dying after the battle. Not everything needs a perfect happy end, or needs to show you the end. I would have actually preferred to have the show end right after it zooms out showing their severed arms. Would have made the perfect end shot for the whole series.

It was sort of a combination of fear and admiration. They admired his capabilities, but feared what he could do with them.
