I watched Kenny Roberts ( pole starting position) pull off to the side at (Sears Point) now Infineon Raceway...let first wave of 40...then 2nd wave of 40....then take off doing a wheely and waving to crowd...on lap #2 crossing the start/ finish line in lead... passing 79 riders under the 2 lap start of race. Amazing rider on an amazing bike....he rode a flat track version of this bike to win Indianapolis Mile...his words at the finish line interview was...They don't pay me enough to ride this thing....
It should be out lawd..which it was in a short time

This is a part of World Motorcycle History Ken ! A true icon of the 2-stroke glory days.
The TZ Factory Racers sent chills up the competition's spines, as Bill would know.
He is a worthy person to be a keeper of this fantastic machine !
    " Emotional" he says. I agree !
As a young man, I used to only see this machine in Yamaha brochures and Cycle World magazines.

@@nohaste4me Yea I was an engineer so TZ350 G barrels, heads, pistons, rings, carbs, exhausts, gaskets all for £80 brand new! from a closing down sale in a bike shop. It was obvious, design your own water pump and radiator, take a YR5 engine and graft it all on, make your own mono shock swing arm fit discs, make a car electronic ignition work, buy TZ fiberglass body work from the local race track. Paint it yellow do Kenny Roberts block black stripes and you have yourself a nice little road bike cheaper than an LC350. Did about 4,000 miles on it and sold it at a profit........fun.

What a great bike!! About 20 years ago I always bought my Yamaha parts with RBR (Rob Bron Racing) shop, a very small shop in downtown Amsterdam. He was an ex motorcycle racer, quite famous, once came 2nd to Agostini on TT Assen and fastest (212 MPH) ever recorded on Daytona. He had a bundle of these TZ racing bikes, he always told me that was for his retirement, unfortunately he passed away a few years later.

I remember Rob Bron well. Was a great driver and always in for a joke. Lots of knowledge about these bikes and willing to share this with others. Helped me out in Assen once when I had some mechanical problems with my TZ750. His racing team was called FPT, meaning For Power Tuning but he always called it Flutje Poep Tralala (this joke works for Dutch speakers only). Had a few beers and laughs with him in Aalsmeer shortly before he passed away. Good memories.

That looks to be a "C" model with the flat side chambers and non-mono shock, good for 90 hp (with proper chambers, 120-130 hp). Dale Newton had one in his collection to when he was alive and lived in Chico CA. His even had the factory copper safety wire and had only been ridden at the factory. When he passed away his sons got the collection and I have no idea what happened to them after that. I rebuilt a "D" model and raced it at Sears Point and the last race at Riverside. Very difficult to get a plug chop because of the shear speed in top gear. A writer for a motorcycle mag once wrote that the power from a Husky was like a fire hydrant: the more you opened it, the more came out. The TZ was like that too. I too have great respect for those who could hustle these around. My experience was that trying to turn the bike (18" wheels) was like wrestling a washing machine around a corner. It didn't really want to turn from straight. Oh the memories...

I always liked two stroke better than four stroke. And it has this special smell to it. That said. I have only limited experience with engines and vehicle repair. Years back, I owned a two stroke Suzuki K50 moped. 50cc 4 gears. It was the 1976 model. And it was a simple machine to fix. I remember the original cylinder had two channels for fuel, but as I were only able to source one for a three-gear version of the moped, then I had to run with three channels for fuel mixture. And boy did it run smoothly.... But yeah. It was easy to fix. So freaking simple, except for the gearbox and clutch.
If anyone want a good and simple moped, then look for a Suzuki K50 late 1970's model.

Watching Kenny Roberts extract the maximum from this bike was a true privilege. Back in the day when national champions had to ride flat track and TT in addition to road races.
