  • Keil shows us an example of what an expansion index is. A soil expansion index is primarily used when a swell test isn't required.

    It looks like the consolidometer apparatus that was put in the bucket prior to adding the water isn’t the 4” one that was shown in the beginning of the video. Is the one that was submerged the smaller 2.5” one used for swell? I’m trying to figure out the best way to “inundate the sample” with just using the 4” kit but the Astm is a little vague when it comes to this step.

    I would love some more information on determining the degree of saturation for the initial soak prep for ASTM 4829. How do you find it? Do you just run a proctor and go a bit drier (maybe 2-3%, like with a remolded swell)? The method is very unforgiving (50 +/- 2%), and a prep mistake can cost 3 days. The internet hasn't been helpful in my search. I may be using it wrong.

    Sorry, but I must say this video is completely useless. Came here to see the test performed.
