Hey Daniel, another thought on reducing the physical bloat of the game is I have moved to creating standee for all the enemies. I print them on sticker paper and put them on cardboard and use plastic stands. So no more consternation over unpainted minis or worrying about storing them or if I play the game somewhere outside my house carrying all these things or breaking them. It's so freeing! I'm doing this for all Games that have minis from now on.
I will be printing all of this. Have to say again ... this is my favourite series of videos ever. I'm loving the game .... and now I see what Hexcrawl is its a no brainer. I've stopped backing kickstarters and started buying SoB :) Wish I'd done it earlier
I just recently began exploring SoB and hadn't planned on trying HexCrawl (seemed like too much to add to a game that is already pretty complicated and a lot to remember/manage), but after watching this I don't know how I can NOT give HexCrawl a try. It sounds amazing and your videos on it have been a fantastic resource so far which has made it look a lot less intimidating (thanks to your explanations of everything). Thanks so much for this video series!
Great set of videos for an awesome game! Please make a playthrough video using Hexcrawl, there is a big interested on seeing a video with Hexcraw! Thanks !
I have not tried it yet but appears to be exceptional work. The overland portion kind of reminds me of how folklore managed the world map. If so, that is a good thing. Just starting Brimstone and this series has been very helpful...but has not curbed my completionist tendencies...
Great video! You do a great job of selling this to people who may be intimidated by adding variants. I hope before you wrap up that you consider providing a summary of the other house rules and variants that you think make the game more enjoyable. I know you have mentioned them in places throughout your other videos (like leveling up only *between* missions, if I remember correctly) but it would be nice to have them all together in one place somewhere for later reference.
This is insane... I've been creating a game, just for fun, for me only and it is so much like hexcrawl! I have a overworld (using mage knight tiles), and a system that you have to roll dice for every movement points you use to travel and you can trigger little encounters (using a small map tile from an other game). Then, when you reach a mine for exemple, you enter and explore it (using map tiles from descent/gloomhaven). The games then transform into a dungeon crawler using minis from various games and I still had to "create" the monsters. I was doing this because I wanted a game with exploration like mage knight, but with dungeon crawling part like descent. I just bought Shadows of brimstone and I stumble on this video. I guess I'll be using this!
Great video. I've really been enjoying this series and this one has me excited to try out hexcrawl. It's interesting to hear that you have been using hexcrawl with forbidden fortress. I might have to go down this route. I'm part of a group that are converting the old West stuff to feudal Japan and it's looking good. A while to go but it will be nice when it's done.
For me, the Eastern and Western have always been two sides of the same genre coin. Ever since watching things like Red Sun, The Master Gunfighter, Sukiyaki Western Django, Zipangu, Yojimbo, Seven Samurai, For a Few Dollars More, The Magnificent Seven, The Dagger of Kamui, and Samurai Champloo, I've realized that the cowboy and samurai represent similar things in mythological storytelling. I mean, I was already playing a samurai character in western SOB, so introducing the Eastern worlds to explore was just a no-brainer.
Again a very interesting and very well explained episode for SoB. And just one I was not aware of. I really have to check this out. I’m already checking where I can print those massive books 😊 It’s crazy, that in a lot of examples fans bring so much value to an IP and, in the end, do not get the appreciation they deserve, because hey it’s still SoB from FFP. It’s because fans love those games by heart and try to make them better with dedication as the producer very often only care about the money (and produce more of the same content over and over again). Anyway... Just one question to Hexcrawl: As I have only a small subset of the whole SoB stuff, can I still experience the whole Hexcrawl content or is it then limited in the one or other way?
@@TheDungeonDive yeah it definitely seems like a solo d&d option for me. This made me think of all the geek gamers solo rpg videos. I wonder if she's played SoB
I have just the core set for City of the Ancients. Other than the downloads for this Hexcrawl adventure, do I have everything I would need to play this "amazing" expansion? Tokens? monsters? etc.?
Do you think Hex Crawl is good for a group or best left for solo? Wondering how the book keeping goes with one person managing it while the other three sit around.
I just checked the Adventure Book for revised edition of City Of The Ancients (which I just purchased after watching this series) and it contains an identical map (without the hex grid overlay). Did Flying Frog use the map from this HexCrawl document, or did this HexCrawl build their map from the Flying Frog Adventure Book map? Just curious.
Having spent quite a bit of time with Hexcrawl, I'm going to have to disagree with you. I honestly think Hexcrawl hurts the game. If you have several expansion, the game is already very fiddly, adding Hexcrawl just makes it unwieldy to me. The loop of going to town, and returning to the dungeon is perfection to me. That being said, I still use extra content like the human enemies, mutations, and injuries, but overland/questing portion i found is just too much fiddling for me. I also use expanded travel events and the swamp village. These all enhance the core game loop without adding to the complexity.
For me its all about creating persistent towns and populating the towns with NPCs, creating stories with those NPCs and connections between the towns and basically turning the game into an amazing solo RPG. I start to explain this process in the next video. For me it doesn’t add fiddlyness, it adds immersion into the world, which is what I want.
Completely agree, hexcrawl makes the game too complex. We play all-in, without any houserules, and the game is perfect as is! But I can understand why some would like this.
Hi Daniel. Just had my Hexcrawl books printed up. For the overland map tiles. Do you feel they are a necessity? Is an A4 print OK for these if so. Many thanks as always.
@@TheDungeonDive sorry, I should've been more clear. When I go to print these books, the background (especially the borders) end up using a ton of ink. How did you get yours to not really have a background?
Been looking forward to this video, Daniel. Great job as usual. I couldn’t find the file for the town and mine sheets in your video (where it gives you the list of town names). Any idea what the file name was?
I downloaded *HexCrawl* when I got SoB back in 2017 after being disappointed with the 'arcade mode/one-off' nature of the game. Then, I put SoB on hold for a while as *SoB Adventures* hit Kickstarter and I wanted to add the new stuff to the game (not to mention build a crossover campaign between SoB and *Skull Tales* using the 'Conquistador' set). Feeling (again) a little disappointed with FFP on how long it is taking them (still) to develop and release Adventures, I sent my HexCrawl to the printer, so I'd have everything tactile-ready to start my campaign. And then... *Zombicide Undead or Alive* happened and I wanted to use all those hero minis in my Weird West campaign (cuz...heavy victim count + tons of hero characters = great variety). But, I'm not gonna wait another year (or more) for Z:UoA to arrive. I got *The Few and Cursed* as well, so I'll start playing with 'Redhead' and see how far I get! One thing is for sure: EVERY scenario-driven game should have a campaign mode and HexCrawl is not a bad model to start with!
I don’t do TLDRs. Have to watch the videos, or don’t. Your choice. If you care about what I have to say, you will watch. If you don’t, don’t waste your time and just move on to a different channel. Thanks.

Alright this might have me back on the SoB story despite the organisational challenges.
Haha. It’s so worth it. With Hexcrawl you’ll see how easy it is to turn SOB into this kind of amazing solo RPG game.

She has. I know because I sent her some files for it. I'll be doing a lot more on playing this like a solo RPG.
Thanks. Does anyone know of any sites where people made this into a book or binder for purchase.
Dear Sirs :) I am so New, and from Denmark :) Maybe anyone can send the link to the download, i would like to studie it :) with regards Martin
Will it work well with new Viking set if that’s all you have? Or really need western set?
It would probably be best to have at least one western set for the mine tiles.

What size is your hex crawl map?
11 x 17

11x17

I'd say Hexplore It: Domain of Mirza Noctis.
