I think the one woman was referring to the expression 'I am hot.' Sometimes my students in South Korea say that meaning they are feeling overheated or the weather is hot, but it can be misinterpreted to be referring to the person's appearance. BTW as a fellow Jack, I appreciate our name!

@@jordandthornburg I didn’t get that bit either. Marx, socialism, communism aren’t quite the same. And as economist Richard Wolff pointed out ages ago, China is govt-regulated capitalism. Many US tech companies work with and have offices in China, much Western manufacturing is outsourced to China, and Western companies have investments in China (notably ex-MP Jacob Rees-Mogg earns money from his company’s Chinese investments)

I think it was Michael Hudson who said that to the Chinese "Marxism" is another word for "politics". China tried actual Marxism decades ago, briefly, and it didn't work because it's an awful system.

I taught English in Thailand and this came up. It's all about context. The circumstances and tone of voice make the intended meaning obvious.

It was so strange since China doesn’t have a communistic economic system at all and that was Marx’s main idea. It’s quite confusing.
