If you press down on the dpad you can spectate your fellow props whilst still alive. If you press right or left on the dpad you move the camera whilst still alive.
My go-to spot on Ambush is hope I get a low profile object like a paint can and head to the garbage dump area to the left of the prop's spawn. Then I hide in one of the patches of grass in that area. It seems really obvious, but you'd be surprised. In first person, it's hard to tell if sometime is in the grass and most people won't even think to look down.

@David Williams that would be unnecessary and probably OP. CoD4’s maps are big enough and have enough “decoys” already. It’s easy and fun enough being a prop in MWR. The reason they had to have decoys in WW2 is because the maps were so small and there wasn’t enough clutter on the ground.
