As a non-Korean speaker, I appreciate David's effort to explain all the word plays and how hopeful this song is despite the global crisis. As expected, BTS always will always shed light to a very dark topic. No other group can elaborate mental illness/health this way. Thank you Bangtan, you never ever disappoint. Amazing as always! 💜

bbygang also said in his video essay that when RM says "I'm ill" he could also be saying that he (RM) is such a workaholic to the point thay he becomes work itself, so it could be interpreted as "I'm 일". It's a really interesting wordplay.

And I’m ill in 90/00’s hip hop culture is a synonym for being dope, sick or cool. Ergo Nas’ “illlamatic” album - and we ALL know how much RM likes (Big) Nas 😊

‘it’s got j-hope written all over it’ - Sound of Consequence ! j-hope was the main composer on this song and you know the song would have such variety when it has hobi on it! it’s such a cool song, i personally love the word plays and the very 90s vibe that it has! Thanks for details :D

The whole idea of this song was suggested and put in the table by j-hope. He mentioned it even how the "DIS-EASE" name comes to his mind and the meaning in his interview in Weverse and as the top writer of the song, I truly appreciate and thank j-hope for bringing this topic into the light bcuz it what people is suffering in their own conditions. Also, you can feel j-hope style of music in dis-ease, talking about deep/meaningful messages while having bright beats. And the old hip-hop beats!! j-hope composer did an amazing job there too.
Anway, thanks for the video and everyone say, THANK YOU J-HOPE for creating another masterpiece.

This is one of the many reasons why I fell in love with BTS.. that they openly talk about a taboo topic, criticize the society for its wrongful doings and still make it sound hopeful & not offensive.

sometimes I see some people recommending bts rappers and they don't mention jhope. I think it is very disrespectful because they all have their own "color" and they know what they do, rap is not a competition of who does it faster or stronger. I know that everyone has their tastes but I hope they can also give Jhope a chance and recommend him too because his lyrics, although seen in “funny” rhythms, are very deep and have very deep meanings as well, he can give you that ray of light that you need in your life and prepare you to be able to see things with more positivity and move forward despite everything.

From the absolutely immaculate wordplay by hobi and joon to yoongi's dark yet true take on the world to the overall production of the song.,its just absolutely beautiful and flawless. J-hope's artistry is kinda underatted and dis-ease just goes to show how unique his perspective is and how much of an amazing artist he is!! He really outdid himself and am sooo proud. Dis-ease is my #1 favourite from the album and its probably gonna stay that way for a long long time.

Yeah, this song deserves more recognition! BTS never fails to give us songs that expresses themselves, something so real, something so relatable. It came into my life just exactly when I needed it
I swear i was so sick and tired with all the songs trending that time,, they were all love songs and all about hope and i dunno it just made me feel more like crap cuz despite all this people are feeling all those love while I can't even see any hint of that in my life. Then there comes dis-ease and I am hooked in it after hearing it for the first time. I was able to kind of grasp the main message of the song, and it touched my heart so bad that it rised up to my personal charts. Watching this just gave me more evidence and proof of the main message that I was able to understand upon hearing it for the first time. I was able to find comfort in this song, it's just so relatable and I totally felt the connection, I can even use this song to express myself rn. They are just so real, and so human, and it takes a lot of courage to voice out what's really happening. BTS never fails to give me all this comfort whenever I needed them, that's why I stan them so bad!

I really appreciate you explaining this for the non-Korean speakers in the room. One of the things I love about BTS is that, even though I don't speak the language, their performances always make me feel something. This is one of my favorite songs on the album as well. This and Telepathy were the two that I kept hitting repeat for the first day I listened to it. Understanding what the lyrics say really helps me understand why I am hitting repeat, if that makes sense.
And the song reflects my situation during this pandemic even though I am in a completely different situation from them. My job has continued as normal because I am an essential worker, but I live alone and haven't seen family or friends in person for months. I haven't gotten an actual hug since March, which causes a whole additional level of dis-ease.

in addition to all the meanings the title could have, it is also (of course) a reference to the covid-19. basically bts/jhope really expressed how they feel rn and critiqued society WHILE making a fun reference on the current situation.

Thank you so much for your effort to ensure that non-Korean speaking audience would understand all the hidden meaning of the word play.
Out of all the verses, I love the bridge the most. It gives me that pump up feeling every time I listen to it. Now, knowing the meaning, I'm amazed by how BTS's sincerity can unbelievably be delivered to the listeners even when we don't understand a word. Coz I've been battling to relearn of who I really am and accepting my true self, my weak self. And it's as if the bridge talks directly to me. I'm so grateful for this song.

'Dis-ease' is actually my favorite track from BE; I just instantly fell in love with it.
When J-Hope gave his explanation about his song and said that it also meant "bottle", I was like "this makes perfect sense, 'cause bottles are fragile, too. If you drop them, they break. If you drain them, they'll be left empty and hollow. If you fill them up too much, they won't be able to contain any air, thus drowning them." But bottles can, in the same context, be the enemy. Don't drink too much "coffee" and make it your "rest." (note: I'm not making any assumptions or pointing fingers, I'm merely amazed of the many ways one can interpret this song)
Anyways, I apologize for this long comment.
Again, thank you and stay safe.

That I you for doing this explain and for adding some more context to this song. Ever since I heard it, I fell in love with Dis-ease. It’s a great song and has so much meaning for me.

I have 4 top songs on the BE album. 1) Dis-ease; 2) Telepathy; 3) Fly to My Room; 4) Blue & Grey. I love all of the songs, but for me, these four songs - I could listen to them over and over and not get sick of them.

This is the best explanation I ever saw. Thanks to one army who recommend me this video. As a non korean person it's hard to understand bts lyrics as their lyrics consist of word plays, idiom and may things. But when the lyrics broke it become more beautiful than before. You explain wonderfully. BTS are not only a good artist but also spectacular lyricist. So what I got it (I assume) basically songs start with them referring to their insecurities, in the end they conclude with nothing last long like new day new morning.

I truly relate to the verses that J-hope sang at the beginning of Dis-ease. I also suffer from the habit of measuring my productivity in order to feel happy about myself. Being productive and focusing on beneficial work is definitely good, but allowing most of your self-esteem and happiness to rely on it is not.
I also love this song because I believe that diseases of the heart exist. Not mental or physical health diseases, but plainly illnesses of the heart. For example, not feeling satisfied with daily life as it is and feeling an emptiness, hollowness, or anxiousness inside that is otherwise filled in by work, is a disease of the heart. In my opinion, it can only be cured by spiritual faith.
Atlas, thank you for this amazing review as always!

“i’m ill” could also mean “i’m 일” like the number 1 in sino-korean so “i’m #1” as BTS is so successful and technically number 1 in so many areas this also makes sense, RM tends to use really thought out wordplays so i wouldn’t be surprised if he also intended this.

Thank you David. But Koreans are not the only ones with a mental illness stigma. The United Stated has that same stigma that if you seek help you are considered weak, crazy and someone not to socialize with. So the Asian culture is not alone in this. Here there r a lot of people who are tryingnto make everyone aware that its ok, dont be ashamed, please seek help. Thanks. I love this song. The boys did great with it.

Same in Germany, physical illness is sth people understand, but if your soul suffers, noone really respects your disease, sometimes neither the own family.
