  • We are facing huge problems in the world today, civilizational-scale problems. However, we cannot solve them using short-term thinking. If we want to move forward into a different future, we must adopt what Ari Wallach calls the “longpath.” Ari shares three ways of thinking to approach the major problems we’re tackling.
Applied futurist and innovation strategist Ari Wallach is CEO of New York City based Synthesis Corp. and is Fast Company’s expert on emergent macro-trends in business and culture. Combining a grasp of new technology and business models with a broader understanding of social, political, economic, and demographic transformations, Wallach helps leaders understand, and shape, the future - of their organizations, their industries, and the world.

Thanks Ari, capitalism is short term and egocentric. You are proposing long term and humanitycentric. Great to see you trying to change our focus, I agree, it is highly necessary.

Shortism might be a product of a society evolving faster and faster. The mayas predicted this in their calander and saw that conciousness was accelerating over time. There are so many things happening in this age and it will only keep increasing if it doesn't come to a halt.
This creates a lot of uncertainty about jobs, future of the environment and puts us under constant stress and automatically in the state of shortism.
We really have to revise to what extent we want to automate everything and still be able to give everybody a job and a feeling of purpose. Solution probably would be communities that focus less on large scale production and automation but are more productive by craftsmanship in any area.
    What are your thoughts?

NextGenAge short-termism could possibly be linked to media and technology, in a way that we want things faster now a days. more so than say 20 years ago, which was only 1997!(man I feel old). example, how many times has some one tagged you in a video and you started to watch it but realized it was 4 minutes long? so you stop watching and say "I don't have time for all that". I think that could be a form of short-termism. this talk really does a good job of explaining the bandaid type of governing that is going on and has been going on in this country since the late 80's.

belac snrub I completely agree with you. Social media in general is also a place where there are large contrasts of what people have and don't. The richest and the poorest are all able to see what they have and because most people compare everything this is quite harmful. In the future we will probably see a lot of people leaving social media and the compulsive use of smartphones, it's really an global addiction which has unseen impact on our health.

*This guy needs to run for president. We need more intellectuals and philosopher types in office rather than reality tv showmen and businessmen. Time to try something different.*

The US is full of young fresh highly talented and intelligent people.Sadly, the system needs to change before they can get into power.
One thing is for sure, these old grey hair wiggies need to go.

Short-termism is all about greed and power. Like the "sandbag" idea, or "putting out fires," the speaker says, short-term strategies can work, but they operate upon a foundation made long ago and is usually crumbling due to age. "Firefighting" is the most inefficient and expensive way to deal with problems, usually costing many times more than a one-time large expenditure to fix something right. But the since the bandaid fix cost is spread out and hidden over many years, quarter to quarter results still look good. Spending the necessary money to fund long-term innovation or do something right the first time will cause revenues to drop and that means the stock price drops because investors start to worry. Same is true for innovation. Only minor innovations can be achieved in three months. And this is why instead of truly new innovations, we instead just get the next generation cell phone and automobile, which are only some new feature built into an old idea.

The goal is simple. Kardashev 3 (or whatever may lie beyond it) and all that it entails.
That said I think on scales of say 10^80 years (1 followed by 80 zeros) When the last black holes are evaporating from hawking radiation. A low power computer running a simulated human mind could use the power of a radiating black hole, But I'm not sure how we can survive any longer under known physics.
