Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that if in the HSC exam, person 4 scores 91 and person 3 scores 88; AND person 3 beats person 4 in the in school assessment, then person 3 will receive a moderated assessment mark based on person 4's external exam performance. This is why having a high rank in you in school is so critical, as a poor in school rank can be dragged down by a poor performer in the external exams.
Also please upload part three :)

Precisely. Your internal rank is crucial!

A bit late commenting on this as my child is doing the HSC so was only in primary school when the video was made. However wonder if anybody can explain the quadratic function used to moderate the school assessment results.
Also as far as I can work out, the rankings from another student's HSC mark can be used to moderate a completely different student's school mark. For example, a student, let's call them student B, is ranked #1 in school assessments but #2 in HSC mark, will have their mark moderated by the results of another student, who we will call Student C who is ranked #1 in the HSC but #2 at school, thus if Student C does well in the HSC it will be their marks that will drag up Student B's moderated school assessment mark and thus their ATAR while Student B's HSC mark will drag down Student C's moderated school assessment mark and thus their ATAR. Is this correct? If so, I cannot see how it is really a fair system.
For example, Student B is good at remembering answers to past papers in maths and the schools tend to recycle questions, so they get a high school assessment but don't do so good in the HSC because the questions are harder and more novel , whereas Student C has more inherent maths ability without memorising old answers and is ranked #1 in the school for the HSC mark, but and gets maybe a mark less than Student B in the HSC so is ranked #2 in the school assessment rankings. In that case Student C's HSC result will be used to moderate Student B's school assessment and vice versa. Of course it is difficult to design a completely fair system, but I wonder how this system is good enough for the top of the cohort at least.

I thought the top HSC raw exam mark goes to the topped ranked student in the school assessment, and then marks as per gaps to provide the rest of the marks for remainder of cohort??
So student ranked 2nd in school assessment might achieve the highest mark in HSC exam being a 95 but for school rank purposes the top ranked student would pick up that mark.
There is still the moral obligation for the teacher to ensure that the top ranked student attains highest ranking. It would be sad if a teacher who has a biase to a student places the said student with an illegitimate top ranking...and so on!
I can’t see that teamwork is essential if the top student has the potential to top both the school assessment and HSC exam? I’m not an expert and would be happy to be corrected.

So if your school performs badly and you happen to get 99, that means your score will be pulled lower coz of the poor performing students.

If a student gets the top mark in the exam say 90, and is ranked first with school based assessment he/she will basically end up with 90 for assessment which is fair. But if this student is ranked number 5 then despite coming first in the exam will get the 5th exam mark as the assessment mark say 70, so 90 plus 70 is 160 divide by 2 equals 80 the difference is given to the top rank student something she/him hasn't earned. In addition if there is a big enough gap between the top few students then further marks can be siphoned up the ladder from the students below. Getting help outside the school to do your assessment tasks to ensure you are on top of the rank order is important because if you don't t do as well In the exams you will benefit from others doing well. Not a bad trick hey!

What If 2nd rank person got 85 in the final exam, and the 3rd place gets 50 and 4th-10th get below 50 for example and the overall class mark is not very good, will the moderated mark for the people who got 85 be significantly lower, even if they got 85 throughout the year and got 2nd rank.

Hey Eddie, I'm at a partially selective high school (Tempe High School) and my rank in physics is 1st. Suppose I score 90 in the HSC assessment, and someone at James ruse (of equal ability to me) also scores 90 in physics in the HSC assessment Does my lower-performing year group mean my final mark will get dragged down due to a lower sum of marks in the HSC exam?

@moeyx_dw lol. I got 97. I understand the system better now as a tutor, and to answer my own question, there is no difference.

@@BlahBlahBlah13623 Hi Gregory. What would be the answer to your original question, if you instead of being 1st in your Physics class, you are 5th, but you and the other guy from James Ruse would have had the same 90 in the HSC?

What happens when there are 2 equals first, and one gets higher in the externals than the other. Do they both get the higher mark as their moderated assessment mark?
