Felt like cheating. The Arkham games challenge you though. Especially the Requiem for a Killer achievement. As an adult, I understand the critique of the games. They are hard or limited. It's just the way it was back then. Even the Konami one has its flaws. I even got Batman Forever later. That's regarded as a complete dumpster fire. Looking back, I see it. At the time? Didn't care. Was Batman and Robin. It's different now, because these companies are loaded and have ten times the employees. They also charge a tonne. You basically pay for a game x2, including season passes. I got Batman Returns for £2.99.
Batman Returns driving sequences on Sega/Mega-CD were by John/Jon O'Brien (aka Jobbee), who also did (most famously) Chase HQ on ZX Spectrum + Amstrad CPC, as well as WEC Le Mans 24 on Amstrad CPC, Burnin' Rubber on Amstrad GX4000 and even contributed to Grand Prix Legends! Something of a racing game expert of the time. He also worked on The Adventures of Batman & Robin on Sega/Mega-CD, which featured 3D driving (though much less known than Batman Returns), and Batman on the Amiga + Atari ST (which also featured a driving sequence). He also worked on Cliffhanger on the Sega/Mega-CD, which featured a snowboarding "racing" sequence.
I loved your coverage of the SNES Batman Returns Kim, good stuff. Fun Fact: One of the other developers of SNES Batman Returns is Etsunobo Ebisu and he helped develop the great Ganbare Goemon series also from Konami.
I remember playing the DOS version back in the day. It was clear the game was "Good" and not "Great", but you couldn't shake the feeling a ton of love went into it, and that it was almost a masterpiece. Now I know why.
Batman: The Movie on the Amiga was my favourite Batman game. Only had 5 levels but they were varied, from memory 2 platforming levels, 2 driving levels (one in Batmobile, one in the Bataero) and one strange chemistry level. The swinging mechanic was extremely satisfying, vaguely Bionic Commando-ish, and I loved the games final act in Gotham Cathedral where you fling your bat rope (or whatever it was called) at the Joker as he’s climbing a ladder to escape on the roof. He proceeds to fall off it and plummet to his doom, Hans Gruber style. I must have replayed it start to finish dozens of times. I think it was used as a pack in game to sell Amiga 500s at one point. I had an Amiga 1000 with 2mb of RAM, it was a beast, ha!
I've been promoting Batman Returns for the Master System for YEARS. It's SUCH a good game. I will say I think the master system version is better than the game gear port though.
This was a wonderful video. I was always a huge fan of the SNES and Game Gear games in my youth - and an anti-fan of the Mega Drive/Genesis mess. Always pleasant when your opinions are mirrored by someone who can argue the case so well. Honestly, I love the entire concept of exploring every single game based on a single title - and man, ‘91-‘93 were really the heyday for this phenomenon. The Addams Family movie and Terminator 2 each got at least 6 distinct base games if we’re counting handheld LCD titles. Darkman, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Alien 3 and freakin’ Hook each received 5 base titles to their names. And by now most people know that Jurassic Park got SO MANY - I count nine direct tie-ins to the movie, with four separate games published by Sega alone! And frankly, EVERY Sega version has merit to it.
I really like how the SNES game did as much as it could to stay as true to the movie as possible; many of the bosses, and even most of the MOOKS are taken directly from characters in the movie, some of which even use attacks they had in the movie (I'm pretty certain that the bomb-throwing Thin Clown is indeed the one that Batman takes the bomb from in the film). Hell, you can even replicate the "use your grappling hook to pull a piece of concrete into the Stungun Clown's head" trick at the end of the first stage, though unlike the movie it won't take him down instantly (though it still does a TON of damage). Fun little details all around on top of just being a DAMN fine brawler. :3
I had the Lynx 2 with the batman returns title and I loved it back in the day (I must be a sadist!). I still remember there was a cheat on the Bad Influence which did help me get further in the game.
I can't express how important and beloved for me is the NES version. Everything about this game brings good memories and every single element is perfect. Graphics, cutscenes, brilliant music, following the movie. I adore this game. Somehow, the SNES version never did it for me...
Batman Returns on the Master System is a proper banger and probably one of my favorite Batman games of all time. As a Batman nerd, I'm lovin' this vid. Nice work, Kim! ❤
I haven't played much of the Mega CD game, but I will always have time in the world for that particular game's soundtrack. It's one of my all time favourites on the console.
I love the Gameboy Batman Animated Series game, glad you covered it! My opinion of a hidden gem for sure, being able to play as Robin unlike the SNES version was a huge plus. The opening of show is recreated really well, on the freakin Gameboy! Can't rave enough about this one
I have excellent memories of Batman Returns on the Master Sys. As a kid I had it day 1 and enjoyed every bit of it it was better than Spiderman on the Master Sys (another good game). Master Sys is the most underrated retro console ever, even in it's day in UK it was still uncommon. NewZealand Story, Chase HQ, Jungle Book, R-Type, Summer Games, Aerial Assault, Terminator, Asterix , James Pond 2, Mickey Mouse games(better than the MD) and Alex Kidd were awesome.
Thank you for giving the SMS version the attention and praise it deserves! It’s been a system top 5 for me since back in the day, and most people I mention this game to look at me like I’ve just fell out of a tree!
I loved the SNES version. I remember renting it lots of times. For some weird reason, though, my SNES paused whenever I pressed the X or Y buttons when i played any Konami game. It also happened playing Turtles in Time. Still had a blast. I later bought a different console and the issue didn't replicate on it.
Am not sure why thought the Game Gear version was North America Exclusive. It definitely got a UK release. I remember it being fairly popular at the time (popular by Game Gear standards at least).
The ultimate 16-bit Batman Returns game: Mix the beat-em-up levels from the SNES, with the driving levels from the Sega CD. That would be amazing. Not quite as amazing as the Arkham series, but that wasn't possible for several more hardware generations, and this would be the best you could do on 16-bit hardware.
I feel like Lynx Batman would be much better if the villains went down with a single hit, instead of requiring three punches to go down. I can see this as a Kung Fu Master clone in the right programmers’ hands. Alas, what we got was a huge mess. Also, a huge thanks for remembering Bill Kunkel and KKW.
Jeez. I remember the Amiga batman Returns game. Coming out just as the platform was starting to give up the ghost, the last thing the poor Miggy needed was a stinker like that.
Father Christmas brought me the Master System game in the early to mid 90s. I loved it. The NES has more iconic games like Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc but the Master System quality was miles ahead.
Nice to see the SMS/GG version get some love. I always thought it was one of the best versions, but it's rarely talked about outside of dedicated Sega retro channels.
great vid kim, thanks for making it I forgot how much of a revelation the Gameboy is/was, i didnt have one as a kid, we had a game gear for travel, it fascinates me how the developers did so much with so little, so much so im thinking about buying my kids one today. Brilliant
i loved the SNES game and the one on the Game Gear. Never knew it was a SMS port and was always surprised why it was soooo much better than the Genesis version. I even have the PC game and it was really fun back in the day and i think it was the only Batman game to nail the feel of Batman comics until probably the Arkham games.
Batman Returns on Mega Cd and Master System are my favourite enjoyed them as a kid and I always was jealous of the SNES Batman returns as I wished Sega had made a Batman returns game of Streets of a rage style that would have been awesome if they did back then
Great video. Thanks Kim. I have the SNES, NES and Master System versions. Enjoy them all and agree with your relative ranking of them. I also have the Gameboy animated series game which is a looker for a Gameboy title and quite fun. Glad I missed that Amiga version - by early 1994 I was enjoying the marvels of the SNES and not missing much if this is any indication.
Another great video Kim. Perhaps this could be a series where you find a film and it's complete game collection that have something interesting to say.
I had a Mega CD. I didn't enjoy the sideways scrolling parts and felt the art direction was very poor. The driving sections with that CD audio? Good times
Bring this to your attention as your editor obviously didn't see it. You you said 1999 when you meant to say 1989. Thanks for all the hardwork preserving games from my childhood
Batman returns on the lynx is less about trying to beat up baddies but instead running as fast as you can, avoiding everything you can, while saving up acid and batarangs for the bosses. I still only got to level 3 a few times because Catwoman is a bitch like life.
The most annoying 'low on energy' alert has to be in NMK's GunNail arcade game. If you're playing casually it's innocuous enough, even if it makes you want to just kill off your ship at that point. If you're playing for score however, it's obnoxious, as you score more points when you have no shields left, but that also coincides with the alert sound.
I had a feeling in the immortal style of Les Dawson, the cornucopia of bat plaudits and celebration would end in the bum-notes and sniggering accompanying the amiga game. My mate got it for his birthday and we sat there screaming with laughter. Biggest disappointment for me was Fred Gray's music. He composed for the amiga *exactly* how he made music on the c64. It could almost be an unused track from Ocean's 'The Caped Crusader'.
Another great video Kim, thanks for sharing with us. Did you ever play Dark Seed on the Amiga?? I always wonder if you played it as a kid...it's one of mine and my sisters favourites from back then...along with Apidya and Moonstone.
I would love it if they released a Batman game collection which had the good 89 Batman, returns, and animated series games. Like how Konami did their turtles cowabunga collection.
Mega Drive Batman Returns I've always found to be pretty average, but I feel doesn't deserve the hate it gets. The music is actually pretty good on some levels and the gameplay is fun once you get the hang of it. The hit detection is poor though, and the gameplay can be frustrating especially in the latter stages. But it's not a bad licensed game.
I think it’s much preferable to the Master System version because the Game Gear game gives Batman A LIFE BAR. He can take MULTIPLE HITS. Feels so wrong for friggin’ Batman of all people to go down in a single hit like a chump.
The Sega Genesis version is the reason I broke my first console at 5 years old. It irritated me so much that I slammed my controller into the system, and it never turned on again. I still hate that game to this day.
Batman Returns and Final Fight CD, best games on the Mega CD by far, but man, the Batman Returns soundtrack, best OST on the MegaCD? I even played the pretty bad Platform game almost all the way through because hearing that music was so good! lol
Wow I'm going to check out that Master System version. I loved the two Shinobi games on the Game Gear back in the day, they were basically my favourite game gear games.
How many movies based on Star Wars are there, really? Sure, there's a hell of a lot of them based on the overall franchise, but how many tie-ins to the first movie specifically? There's the 1983 arcade game, a few 8-bit side-scrollers and Super Star Wars for the SNES, but I can't think of much else. The arcade game got a lot of ports, so if you count them all individually that beefs up the number quite a bit, but it still isn't huge.
I remember seeing the screenshots for the Amiga game in a preview feature, must have been in The One since that was my Amiga mag of coice. But I had moved on from the Amiga by the time the game came out so I never played it. Guess I didn't miss much. Absolutely loved Batman The Movie the game on both C64 and Amiga, though. Back when you were a kid and htey idea that you could PLAY a MOVIE seemed like witchcraft. I can still hear the music in my head.
Master System Batman Returns was the very first console game I ever played. Speccy 89 Batman was the first game ever. Amiga Returns is possibly the worst Amiga game I played at the time
I had the Tiger game, and compared to other Tiger titles it's one of the better ones. Doesnt say much but was a good time killer. It's got 4 levels where 1 and 3 are with the car and 2 and 4 are a static beat em up - and you fight catwoman and penguin after each 2 levels.
Given their pedigree, it's a shame Denton Designs weren't able to make an isometric style Batman game, perhaps even something that harkens back to the original Batman game from 1986.
The only one I played was Batman Returns. And that was purely because I loved the film, loved Denton Designs earlier stuff, loved my Amiga, and, managing to miss any reviews, I thought any combination of the three would be awsome. Sadly, I was wrong.
I had the Genesis game back in the day, and I always found it enjoyable. The mechanics were admittedly sloppy, leading to frequent frustration; but the atmosphere was great, and the levels interesting. I still enjoy playing it occasionally today.
26:30 that is strange, since I own a Batman Returns cartridge for the GameGear for years, and certainly haven't imported it from the US. Also, Segaretro lists an european packaging.
As a kid, I was a huge fan of Batman Returns on the NES. I spent countless hours playing it. Additionally, no one mentioned in the reviews I read or watched that this game featured multiple endings. My young mind was completely blown away when I accidentally discovered an ending different from the one I was familiar with. When I upgraded to the Sega Mega Drive and got Batman Returns, my excitement was through the roof... only to be met with disappointment. The game had larger sprites, and it did a decent job of capturing the dark ambiance of the movie. However, Gotham in this version felt so empty. In the NES game, there were always little details in motion, like flickering lights and subtle animations that drew you in, making you feel like you were really there. The Sega version, by contrast, felt barren and dull. I also disliked the soundtrack. Back then, I wasn't familiar with the term "hitboxes," but they were just awful in this game, truly frustrating. I’m relieved none of my friends had the SNES version of Batman Returns. Seeing that version might have been heart-breaking for me, knowing what could have been. I was a huge SEGA fan at that time...
Thanks Kim - great stuff. As always :) A video in which the reluctance towards Amiga Action is visible once again. Why? It intrigues me to death - in Poland, in the early 90's, Amiga Action enjoyed exceptional esteem (for many reasons, although the main reason was its relative availability - one of the few British gaming magazines that could be purchased in Poland at the time). Articles, advertisements of Amiga Action - literally - sold pirated versions of Amiga games in Poland (in short). Very often Amiga Action was treated almost as an indicator of how a magazine dedicated to video games should look like. That's why I'm so curious as to why this periodical was sometimes despised in the UK. Can you elaborate on this (a video about Amiga Action by you would be something special!)?

@@Kim_Justice thank you, I've watched it twice already and looked up more about him each time I watched. Hoping that Barry Horowitz video makes it up here one day, the guy's great.
Hi Kim I'm sorry but your wrong about batman returns on the game gear it did come out in Europe I brought it with some Christmas money at a toy's R us in Sheffield back in the day and I completed it a few times if I remember
Did you play any of this rather large collection of Bat games? What was your favourite? Have a shout in the comments, and many thanks for watching. :)
The supernes one
@chanel6nus This comment is far more boring than that video was.
I owned a couple of these. The Master System one and the Mega Drive one.
I picked them up cheap from Cash Convertors.
I was just happy to be Batman in a game and smash stuff.
Back in the day, you just played a game and were grateful to have it.
It was hard, ridiculously hard. Ultimately, it makes you a better gamer.
I remember when games first started to have save points.
@chanel6nus Nope. Really isn't
I have it on Game Gear and im from UK, I guess it eventually got a release here

I wish that Factor 5 had been the ones to develop Batman Returns on the Amiga and Mega Drive. It could have been a great riff on the Turrican games.
Bataero? Was called the Batwing
@@fandangobrandango7864 Haha yes! Knew Bataero didn’t sound right 😂
I've been promoting Batman Returns for the Master System for YEARS. It's SUCH a good game. I will say I think the master system version is better than the game gear port though.
Batman Returns is my favorite Batman movie of all time. The SNES version is the best of the bunch.
me too! my cousin took me to see it the 1st day of release ,I think I was 10 yrs old.
Gets better and better and never gets old 👍
1. Batman Returns
2. Batman Forever
3. The Dark Knight
Nostalgia, I know...
I'm a mook? What's a mook?
The Master System is underrated for audio, the Sonic games all had fantastic soundtracks too.
The Snes Batman Returns is probably my favourite mainly cause i love side scrolling beat em ups! I have love for the Sega Cd version too!
I love both of those but the NES version needs love too! Amazing soundtrack & great 8-bit beat em up
I had the Lynx 2 with the batman returns title and I loved it back in the day (I must be a sadist!). I still remember there was a cheat on the Bad Influence which did help me get further in the game.

Awesome Video. I especially love the usage of the C64 Sid Tunes from the first movie game during the Amiga game segment
Die Hard has had quite a few games made based on it over the years!

Quality work as ever, Kim!
Nice to see the SMS/GG version get some love. I always thought it was one of the best versions, but it's rarely talked about outside of dedicated Sega retro channels.
It is strange that its not discussed on the local news; down at the pub, or at Mothers Saturday Sewing Circle. Notable in its absense.
Love your channel Kim - you are a very talented broadcaster and your style IMO is completely unique. Always great to see another video from you.
great vid kim, thanks for making it
I forgot how much of a revelation the Gameboy is/was, i didnt have one as a kid, we had a game gear for travel, it fascinates me how the developers did so much with so little, so much so im thinking about buying my kids one today.
Brilliant
Thanks, Kim. The Mega Drive game of this film was good fun!
i loved the SNES game and the one on the Game Gear. Never knew it was a SMS port and was always surprised why it was soooo much better than the Genesis version. I even have the PC game and it was really fun back in the day and i think it was the only Batman game to nail the feel of Batman comics until probably the Arkham games.
Let's also not forget the mega cd batmobile game has end of level guardians...according to Dexter Fletcher anyway
The GG game was one of my favorites from my childhood. Tough but fair.
Batman Returns on Mega Cd and Master System are my favourite enjoyed them as a kid and I always was jealous of the SNES Batman returns as I wished Sega had made a Batman returns game of Streets of a rage style that would have been awesome if they did back then
I looked up old SMS Batman returns reviews and am surprised to find they thought it was terrible!
Awesome vid as usual Kim
I’ve genuinely never played any of these. I’m gonna start with the Master System version.
always tried to save the girl in the intro sequence for batman returns genesis because my older brother would say that I could
I still have that Tiger handheld! I loved it when I was six years old
The Mega Cd soundtrack is phenomenal.
My two favorite Batman Returns games that I continue to play decades later….the SNES beat em up, and the driving levels from the Sega CD game.
Great video Kim, love the way you sound with your storytelling. Thanks for the episode ❤

Great video as usual.
You really do a service to the retro-gaming community. As my mother would say: "Cheers, big ears!"
Your mother is a real wit.
You're the greatest Kim :D looking forward to this!
Batman returns on the lynx is less about trying to beat up baddies but instead running as fast as you can, avoiding everything you can, while saving up acid and batarangs for the bosses. I still only got to level 3 a few times because Catwoman is a bitch like life.

I would love it if they released a Batman game collection which had the good 89 Batman, returns, and animated series games. Like how Konami did their turtles cowabunga collection.
Genesis Batman Returns is very nostalgic for me, even though it sucks.
Once you get used to the controls, I loved the Lynx version and it's challenge
Batmobile on fire, speeding through the frozen woods is a great Image, to be fair.
IMO, Adventures of Batman & Robin has even better looking driving/scaling graphics on the Sega CD.
Mega Drive Batman Returns I've always found to be pretty average, but I feel doesn't deserve the hate it gets.
The arcade game got a lot of ports, so if you count them all individually that beefs up the number quite a bit, but it still isn't huge.
brilliant video I enjoyed this.I like drawing these characters as well.
Had the master system version as a kid. Played the shit outa it. Got to the penguin riding a big duck but never beat it
I remember seeing the screenshots for the Amiga game in a preview feature, must have been in The One since that was my Amiga mag of coice.
GINX TV should be trying to sign people like Kim up for their station.
Great video! That snes Batman returns was so damn fun!
You have spelled your name wrong.
great vid, I need to swing by the twitch stream and hang out again sometime
Very informative and intersting video as usual..keep up
I had the Genesis game back in the day, and I always found it enjoyable.
Also, Segaretro lists an european packaging.
great info/video, what music plays in the end?
Had the Tiger Electronics handheld, was a lot of fun at the time!
going to have to fire up the mastersystem - never heard of this game being good on it :)
cheers!

Far out! That point 'n click looks great!
BATMAN RETURNS ON SNES IS THE BEST CHRISTMAS VIDEO GAME OF THE 16BIT ERA.
I used to rent that Mega Drive/Genesis version and yes it have some experience how bad it was.
Great video! Unrelated video question, what happened to the great Dr death video?
It will be back. Just need to get rid of the various blocks from WWE.
@@Kim_Justice thank you, I've watched it twice already and looked up more about him each time I watched. Hoping that Barry Horowitz video makes it up here one day, the guy's great.
Batman returns for snes is one of the better beat em ups for that console very underrated game
