This video was a life saver. Just by switching to a larger brush, my swatch went from 19 streaky colors down to 2, and I have 2 fewer transparent paints to deal with. And since this video is a year old already, I have the 3 Shades of Gray kit to fix those. Thank you, Melanie - you are my go-to video mentor for PBNs!
Thank you so much for your feedback!! It helps me to know that it works for you as much as it works for me. It’s so important that other viewers know that I’m not just making these videos trying to sell my wares 😂🥴, but that these tips REALLY do make a huge difference. Thank you for commenting about your experience! 🥰
Thank you for this video! I was pulling my hair out yesterday with some extremely streaky paints. I don't know why I didn't think about the brush size to eliminate the stroke marks. 😳 The family of Gray's looks wonderful. I am so looking forward to their arrival. Thank you for all you do!
Thank you so much for the feedback!! I think visually seeing the side-by-side even convinced me that what I had been doing actually did work. Sometimes I wonder if I just “think” things are working, but in this case, seeing was believing. I cannot wait to get those Gray’s in people’s hands! I think they will be the literal “Survival Kit” everyone needs in their PBN arsenal.🤞🏻So happy you found this video helpful!
Thank you!!! I love receiving this kind of feedback, Dolores! I appreciate you watching my videos, because I know I’m always dragging behind on my content nowadays to design new products to aid us in our “PBN journey”…so I hope you’ll continue to stick with me while I work on some new videos and some new products! 🥰❤️
So wish I would have found these video's, especially this one, before I completed other PBN and felt they weren't as nice as they could have been. Wish I could repaint them. Thank you so much for sharing all these tips and techniques! I'm so happy I found your videos.
What makes this video the best is the quality close up camera work. I can see every stroke of your paintbrush as if I were present with you. Two suggestions for improvement. It's best to change only one variable at a time so we can be sure which one is having the effect. When you flash written material on the screen, leave it up a little longer for us slow readers.
This was so interesting for me as I am new to this art and am awaiting on my canvas being framed (custom)which I know is going to be expensive. Interesting about the gesso too, I will try it. Thanks Melanie!

This is going to be the best Christmas ever when the kit and the new brush bundles arrive!! And thank you for a super informative and helpful video!! You help us all to "Enjoy the process" so much more. AND allow us to "Love the results" also! Once again I love these!!!
Thank you for these tips as I found them really helpful. I have been painting for over a year and wondered why some paints were streaky. I just thought it was normal and just kept applying more coats. Your tips given here will really help to make my paint by numbers even better. Best wishes from Newcastle, Australia.
Oh my gosh I am totally doing this, and have been using the small brush for painting everything just because I thought it was better to do the outlining and get more of the detail. I guess I was scared that if I used the larger I would not do so well on the lines
Using the largest brush for the cell is definitely a huge help! I noticed a difference immediately. If you have tried that now, have you seen a difference?
Have you made larger flat brushes for big cells? Like a sky one you don’t want to do Flow-method as know using that big “craft” brush don’t see using it. So use my largest flat brush (paints not streaky) but can have streaks by to many brush strokes. Ty.
I haven’t made a large flat brush, because there are so many larger flat brush sets available on the market. The only reason I designed my line of brushes was because there were no adequate, affordable detail brushes for paint by numbers. If I knew mine would sell against the competition, I would DEFINITELY design my own line of larger flats! That’s the set I’ve been wanting to do next for a long time.
@@MelanieBsCreativeStudio I may be tad biased but still have the white brushes (first ones) & still using them! Can’t say that about any other brushes bought so far. Wonder in a survey how many ppl would say? Being small business have to pick what will sell more. Ty.
I recently had an experience with My Paint by Number that was like this. Over 1/3 of the paints were transparent and/or streaky and they had rolled the canvas but not wrapped it or enclosed it in a cardboard tube or anything, so it was battered in transit. Their response was to "just iron it" and when I asked for a refund they said I would have to pay for return postage (from Australia to USA) and if they agreed that the set was not up to standard they would provide a refund. Which effectively would mean I was out of pocket for the set and the postage, because what company agrees their own product is not good enough? And then there's other times when you send people a photo of the paints received where one is missing and they immediately send you not just the missing paint but an entirely new set of paints because they want you to have a good experience and be a return customer! It's just mind boggling.
It’s so hard to know what shades, because they look so light until they dry. The lightest gray is very light, so it’s tricky. That’s why I wanted to create my own kit. Taking the guesswork out of it will help everyone feel confident, I hope! ❤️
Great video as always!! What a great place to come to improve your pbn!! You make it so easy to understand and apply it ourselves! Looking forward to the 3 shades of grey too!!
So glad I found your video. I just started a new pbn today. I only used 1 color and a small amount, so I'll gesso it tomorrow. I previously painted Edgar Degas's Dance Class (Michael's). It turned out horrible, not just bc I didn't know u were supposed to Gesso the canvas, but the paints they sent with the kits were the wrong colors for the tutus😠😖. I was so disappointed and didn't finish it. What a waste of time and money. It's too bad, as it's one of my favorite paintings. One good thing is that it came with a poster, so I'll just frame that.
Clear gesso alone may not fix every problem, but I guarantee you there is a solution for every problem! The initial reason I started my channel was to help others avoid that level of frustration by sharing the things that I was learning, because I do get so frustrated. I didn’t want others having to go through that, because I just want everyone to be able to get a sense of mindfulness and “zen therapy” out of our hobbies. 🥰
omg, I am almost finish a nightmare pbn. It was given to me as a gift from my son so I feel I had to finish it. The paints were awful, so many non covering colours. The canvas was poor quality and the lines to paint were hair thin. Even with the thinnest of brushes. I have never used so many four letter words under my breath. lol. After doing the last one which was Schripper and it was so easy and perfect and enjoyable to paint. If I wasn't so determined to do this, I would have thrown it out along time ago. So frustrating .Thank you for this video. I basically have to paint over each colour.
I still don’t get very even corkage when apply my gesso but must use my left arm (and right handed) & went over twice but can still see & feel spots I miss? Tried the black foam brush but got black things on my canvas so stopped & used a real brush. Ty so much for these tips! Can’t wait for the set of flat brushes as love the 10/0 small one but for larger spaces need a good set of those kind 🤗!
I’ve been stalking FedEx anxiously waiting for the flat brush set to arrive!! It’s killing me! That will be my “go-to” set for sure. I am already looking into a new larger flat brush set…because I now see a greater need after doing this video and seeing this canvas. Oh, the “work” never ends of the creative mind. 😂

Thank you for creating this video...I'm a visual learner too. One question I have is: I received a canvas with a background color for each cell. Now would you gesso it?
