Wow that was brilliant from Greg and Colin. Really good to see you both again after all these years. I grew up in Hulme half a mile from the Reno. Loved the all-dayers in Manchester early 80’s. Wednesday night in Legends and the Hacienda. Spin Inn records on a Saturday afternoon. Great memories. Heard Mike Shaft on the radio this morning! Best wishes to you all!
After watching again, Colin Curtis was, and still is, our Larry Levan, our Ron Hardy, our Frankie Knuckles, our David Mancuso. To those that know, Colin Curtis is not only a pioneer of black music, he is the most influential DJ and one of the most important spokesman for soul, jazz and house music.
I was there in the early 80s at legends in Manchester. Without doubt the best music sound and lighting system I've ever been too. Greg talked about a few white lads in the club. I was one of a group of friends that enjoyed being there. Watching the black guys break dancing. Never any trouble. The best times. I miss them times very much
I was there mate, every Wednesday and you’re right never any trouble. Everyone was so into the incredible music, dancing and atmosphere. It was sacrilege to booze up and act like an asshole, it’s not what music loving poor inner city kids did, particularly if you were local to the area and in tight knit posses where many knew who you are. Couldn’t show your face if you did.
Spin Inn was a great place to pop into in the early 80s, I got my mission brief from Mike Shafts Taking care of business Piccadilly radio show on a Monday evening. Tuesday Id turn up and rifle through the Spin Inn list of floorfillers on the counter and demo a favourite I heard on Piccadilly radio. Then later curse my dads cheapo hi-fi for not living up to even 20% of Spin Inns high end sound quality. Wednesday night at Legends made up handsomely for any disappointment with home sound reproduction, that club really was something else. First time there in early 1982 I was totally blown away by the magnificent New York skyline style lighting, clever and deceptive floor layout and killer sound system. With Greg Wilson at the helm, it was heaven for jazz-funk and electro enthusiasts, and I made my pilgrimage there every week for at least 2 years. It wasnt until I went to Peppermint Place Blackburn and The Palace in Blackpool in mid/late 80s that I felt the rest had caught up a little. It is great to see these famous DJs revisiting these hallowed sites that played a very important legendary era in music, they were very special times in my young adult life.
Great documentary .. is there a longer cut? My era was 82-83-84. Spin inn records back then was a slice of cake shaped hole in the ground ... club next door (by then) was Cloud 9 .. Spin Inn had a superb sound system, on which they'd demo your 12" of choice ...Those electro imports never sounded as good on your home system after hearing them in the club or on Spin In's sound system. C-Bank- One More Shot, Klein and MBO -Dirty Talk, and Q - Voice of Q were hugely important records for me.
Worked there briefly in 85 to 87 ish top atmosphere on Saturdays Kenny Harry Mike damn remember the 50p 12" box on the counter with the dodgy tunes nobody would buy lmao I left and russ started there shortly after that they moved to the underground market name change too
Yep spinn in confirmed the shop to be in the 80,s I had the blessing to work there for a while Ken russ Harry & Gary were a great bunch of guys walked down there the other day to see the shop looking at the front view gave me chills remembering going down them stairs me& my mate did a graffiti piece on the wall leading down the stairs with the spinn in logo does anybody remember the piece ?
Greg used to occasionally get coaches organized for the Wigan Pier (Tuesday night) regulars to travel over to Legends. I used to get home at 3am and be up for work at 6:45am. That would kill me now!
Seeing Nigel who used to be the manager at the Playpen with his dad jumper honestly cracked me up. Need to do a reunion at some point and bring all the old heads and crews together, Tomlin, Foot Patrol, Broken Glass, Buzz, The twins, etc.
cool 66 year old. I was in to this culture, then and now. I never D J in a big way .Mainly Concentrating on collecting the rare and white imports, that I still have today. I have some rare Marvin 45s, unavailable then and now 45s. In the days. You took your 45s to the clubs knowing the D J would not have the record and he would play them on his set. I was always asked ,where I got the records from and could they keep my records till next week. No chance. I am still, to this day. Passionate about all kinds of Music and I mean all kinds. My wife, of 46years together, loves the music I play, every day!. In all kinds of format, vinyl,mp3, Dolby cassette, UA-cam, Dab. The mix is endless. Vinyl and Cassette are my preferred format. OHhhhh , yes. D J and radio legend MR ROBBY VINCENT.
13.33 is ‘Jazz Carnival’ by Azymuth. Released on Milestone records. There’s version off the LP ‘Light As a Feather’ and a brilliant 12” . Completely awesome tune !
I wish I’d kept at least 1 copy of the top floor fillers that I took from Spin-inn every week in the early 80s. Looking back I joked about how they couldn’t be making much money if it was handwritten… On reflection they couldn’t be more characterful, and valuable artefacts to have in your personal box of sentimental stuff. The ignorance of youth knows no bounds…
