Did Not Expect This... Resource Hive / Nuc Winter Survival Results

- Опубліковано 30 лис 2024
- Overwintering nuc bee hives has always been something I knew would be a challenge. I set a goal in 2018 to overwinter several nucs in resource hives into Spring of 2020. Today is the day I opened all the hives for inspections, and now the results are in... Check out how many hives survived the winter and see how many queens are alive. Honey bees never cease to amaze me. Welcome to Spring!

I very much appreciate how well you care for your bees. The haters are just jealous their apiaries aren’t anywhere as organized, clean and healthy as yours. You give me something to strive for with my 3 hives. Goals!
The cool thing about watching the evolution of your bee yard over the years (can't believe it's been years) is that you followed your own instincts and were able to block out some of the negative and judgemental chatter from the established bee community. Now, what I know about bee keeping could fit inside a thimble and truth be told I enjoyed your sour bread, hoop house, and apple tree pruning videos as much as your bee ones. But there's something rewarding about watching a dude chart his own course and yield such positive results.
Thanks for the kind words. I have to give credit to my supportive commenters and all the hundreds of beekeeping videos I've watched on youtube over the years. Some of the stuff I do looks different than the things 'traditional' beekeepers do, but my style is all based on logic and stuff I've seen from others. I just put stuff together a little differently. Also... disclaimer... my beekeeping technique works for me, in my climate, with my bees. YMMV.
BEE DANCE!!!! I've missed seeing that! So glad so many nucs survived!
I root for you every time you have a success! I’m a gal living in a suburb working in the tech industry but your channel brings me joy! I’ve learned so much about bee keeping from your channel and have a healthy respect for the work. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and giving those of us stuck behind a computer screen all day a fun break!
I followed your wintering methods (excluding the outer foam covers). Came out of winter with a strong colony! Thank you!
The bees lost in your front yard are kind of cute. Also did the irony that your main dead hive is providing resources for your resource nuc's cross your mind? I chuckled a bit.
If they're confused by tall trees it's logical they might be by robbing the wrong hive. I'd keep an eye on it at least.
R.I.P. 2 nuc's, Congrats on the 6 strong nuc's. Got a feeling this is going to "Bee" a good year!
Love your videos! I have learned so much while watching over the past couple seasons. Keep it up!
Congrats on the crazy good survival rates! If you plan on buying new queens to replace your deadouts, I've heard/read good things about the Buckfast bee, have a look into it. See if they interest you :) Adds genetic variety to your yard too.
I would remove the frames from the dead hives in order to stop the robbing. Even if the openings are on opposite sides .. the proximity will lead to robbers going in to the wrong hive.
3:12 - I love whenever he has one bee or more resting on him while he talks. It's as if they're there to assist him with the video, or they're like: "You have more pollen for us, Papa? : )"
13:33 - Ahhh, and there it is. And here I was worried we wouldn't get one of his classic happy dances. How could I have been so foolish as to doubt that? ;)
You must not change your ways. Its been working so far so you know what they say. If is not broken don’t fix it. 👍
I overwintered 5 nucs this winter unwrapped. Only a 1/2" homosote board and 2" insulation on top of a mountain camp feeder shim. They are doing great so far.
That yard is absolutely abuzz! Well done on meeting your goal and overwintering those nucs - I'm always amazed at northern beekeepers managing to keep their colonies alive through winters without the bees decamping to move to the south. That's what I'd do. LOL
On a more serious note, I've been telling new beekeepers that I encounter/help to watch your videos from the beginning. You easily have one of the most practical and informative channels without a smug or knowitall attitude as if your way is the best/only way. Can't wait to see what the year has in store when the season gets moving for you all.
Thank you so much. All my best to you and your bees!
Haven't seen the dance for a while :)
Yeah. That made me smile so much my cheeks were hurting! LoL
Congratulations, Jim!!!
Yay for celebration dancing!!!! My daughter called it! ❤️ She loved it & laughed so hard. Congratulations!
The bee guy that maintains our yard told me that snowberry blossoms are desirable in that they prevent the honey from crystallizing . Our land is in southern BC and we are 100% organic .
YAY, love it when you dance! :) You're doing an amazing job! Hope you all are staying healthy!
I have two silver maples next door, which is unusual in SE Louisiana. We have tones of reds. And the silvers pop a month before the reds. I mentioned you in one of videos that I'm publishing in a few days about your success fixing a LW hive. I shook mine as I've done in the past, but I should've reviewed your video first. In 8 years I think I've had three LW hives now... Glad your NUCs made it...
Excellent. I’m going to follow exactly what you did this next fall. I gave away nucs last year but they assumed the beekeeper came with it. Lol
That happy dance made me laugh!
LOVED your Happy Dance... and you DEFINITELY earn it PLUS MORE!!
congrats on the successful overwintering nucs. I've enjoyed watching your bee yard grow from 1 little hive to the booming collection it has become!
6 of 8 Nucs? Not bad at all. This video cheered me the heck up after I broke my toe so. Thanks 😀
I remember when you first started I was worried that you were going to lose the lot. Now look at you full swing and doing great congrats on getting 6 nucs through winter.
Loved the Happy Dance. CONGRATS! Good video.

Well two out of 8 isn't bad. You're accomplishing your goals. Keep it up.
Jim, I've been watching bee keeping videos for just over a year now (I've seen all of yours) and I have about a half dozen or so beekeepers I subscribe to, but I must say that you are by far my favorite. You have a very endearing way of presenting yourself and have a production style that is extremely entertaining and somewhat addictive, and that's not including all the vast amount of knowledge you have passed on through your your journey in beekeeping. Nothing beats trial and "accomplish"! All this to say, I've always wanted to 'keep' bees since I watched how happy my father-in-law was keeping his 8 hives, and now that you've inspired me attempt beekeeping (I just retired and we're building on a lake in Tennessee), I'm looking forward to getting started! Probably wont be moving into our house until lat fall this year, so it'll be spring next year before I start. I'll keep watching and learning from yours and few others, so please keep the videos rolling!! Additionally, I'm enjoying the barn build as well!!! :)
Your dead hive became a resource hive for your resource hives!
It's bees all the way down.
Congrats on an awesome over-wintering, very well done. The proof is in the results.
Congrats on meeting your goal! Your hives are thriving. I bought my first resource hive, and hope to never have to buy bees again. Good job! 😊🐝
congrats on overwintering your first nucs!
Just great bee keeping, plain and simple. And we are learning to love your bees because of your devotion to your bees. To a successful year!
That looks great! Having started last may I have been building up 14 swarms. 80 degree tuesday revealed one dead hive with dead bees on corner away from honey and a second hive with nothing but drone brood. So 12 made it! They are bringing in pollen from trees and quit the pollen substitute. So hopefully we both will be swimming in honey. Thanks for showing your ideas, gives me something to possibly adapt to my region.
Congratulations! I have learned so much about bee keeping through your videos.
If you got living bees I say do whatever works for you. there are probably as many ways to overwinter a beehive as there are beekeepers.
I LOVE THE DANCE🤣🤣🖤🖤.
Pleased it's going well. Keep up the good work.
Hey Mr. Jim if you still haven't got a name for the Vermont queen what about Vera, Victoria, and Vernon. Big V for VICTORY for surving the winter
Super excited for you and your bees. It’s fantastic to see all of your hard work and trial and error paying off. I’m looking forward to seeing what this year brings!
My favorite video today, loved the happy dance.
Good deal! Congratulations on the NUCs over wintering.
Congratulations, I only went into winter this year with 4 nucs. Lost 3 (2 were my fault) but my big hives went 9 for ten and look good. Very mild March here in central Missouri.
It looks like you have had a really good winter and your hives will be coming on strong this spring. I only overwinter one nuc this year but my plan is for 20 this coming winter. Thanks for sharing my friend.
The relatively mild weather definitely helped! Too bad the next week won't get out of the 40s, but I'm glad I got in there to make sure they were solid for the next few weeks. Looking forward to spring.

Great news! So Happy for you and to hear success for the honey bees❤ Keep up your good work. Thanks for sharing your videos 🙂
LOVE😘 how you name your queens! My hubby thought I was silly...🤷♀️💞then again, he snickered when I started naming cattle. Only took until the end of that one that summer before he started seeing the benefits. Granted, i only name the ones that are going to be around for the duration. The stockers and sale calves, they just keep their ear tag numbers.😪🤐🙈doesn't mean the aren't cared for as well as the others, but its just easier for the long term residents to learn "who" is being spoken to..and, he found that getting a bit of love and attention helps the bottom line. Happy cows teach calves to be happy and they eat more, go to the sale ready to EAT, and gain better. So, another convert.🦄😁😎😘
Have been waiting to hear about the nucs, so glad that most of them made it nicely through the winter. Keep up the good work and lots of love to your bees.
Congratulations, 6/8 is a very good result. Greetings from Germany.
Those are some very healthy NUC's, it looks as though you are going to have an extremely good year again!
That's great news Jim, congratulations!!!
Congrats!!! That's great news, I'm very happy for You and enjoyung this new season you are about to start, so I'm tuned for the coming episodes! 😊
Great new! 6 out of 8 is great numbers! Keep doing what you're doing.
That's great man that's six new colonies time to grow.
I love the videos you put out. I have copied your overwinter method this year and all five of my hives here in Iowa have survived winter and have lots of resources left as of March 10th. Keep it up it is much appreciated and helpful.
Cant wait to see the spring and fall flows
Yay Queens! :-)
That maple is dropping pollen to the ground hence why they are down low. YAAY BEES, so happy for you! Never doubted! No criticism here, I've always thought you were implementing wise choices! Great job! Smiles and blessings...Go Bees!!🐝
Good to know the silver maple feeds the bees. I have a huge number of them in my subdivision. Maybe put a swarm trap up in the maple and see if I can attract a swarm! Later -- When the maples open in Minnesota! :)
Dance needs works .....room for improvement lol.cracking to see such good results kudos.
So great to see how well all of your bees overwintered!!! Fantastic!
My two hive made it and look amazing. But now it’s a blizzard today... THANKS CORONA VIRUS... kidding...
It s a blizzard though... 30 MPH winds and snow falling sideways... ugh!!!
So glad to see all your girls looking so good!!! Well done Sir, well done. 🐝😎
Hooray!! The return of the happy dance.
This is my first year doing bees. I have 2 nucs coming in june and I love your videos!!! They're super informative and I love the over wintering insulation. I live in wny so I was afraid of them all dying but will definitely be using all these tips
So excited for you! I’m so happy that you’ve got such strong nucs!!!
Hey you did it man! You were hoping for 4 but you were blessed with 6!
You’ve done a great job maintaining and growing your apiary. It’s been a fun journey to watch. Now I’m interested to see how you maintain a strong apiary without it getting too big leading to swarming or other issues. I know you’ve done your research. You always do.
I'll do my best, but I'm not swarmphobic... If a hive swarms, it's not the end of the world. I'm going to set up a lot more swarm lures this year, but I've come to find that the bees know exactly what they're doing and all my hives that have swarmed early in the season have left behind AMAZING colonies that have turned into monster hives. It's the LATE swarms that really decimate a hive and then they don't have time to rebuild.
My silver maples are typically 2 weeks ahead of Reds.
I think you are doing a great job, I am learning so much from you.....keep up the great vids....
I'm so excited for you and your nuks! You had such a great winter. Can't wait for what spring brings you.
Ha the "haters" can go fly a kite. It's working. I'm up the road in NH, I have 2 hives and I did almost exactly what you do for winter prep. A little less outer insulation, but vivaldi boards and sugar on top. I am 2/2 this year and one hive was real weak going into winter. It works. My hypothesis is that moisture is often overlooked or at least not stated as the culprit enough. I really think the vivaldi boards work exactly as they should.
Congratulations
Also nice to see that you insulated them. I think that is key in the northern climes I am going to start some modified layens hives this summer and see how they do. Local bees only!
Congrats!!
Congrats. That's awesome. I plan to try overwintering nucs at end of this year.
its good to see how far things have gotten since that time you dropped the comb lol. If i was to do bee keeping id do it that same way as you do with burlap and all it looks like it works really well i couldnt change either.
looks like you are doing very well. Keep it up!!!!
Cool stuff 👍🐝🐝🐝 wish you luck for the year
Awesome news! Looking forward to this new year!
Well done 6*8 .
I over wintered both my nucs in a 5 deep and 5 medium config. They made it because I modeled what you did. I insulated and Vivaldi boarded with burlap. Fed sugar with pollen every 50+ day just to keep an eye on them.
They didn't just make it, they came out so strong, I worried they would swarm. I added boxes below (thank you Ian ).
Won't ever do it any other way. Less worry. Less stress.
In zone 6b. 2000 feet. Western North Carolina.
Thank you for another fun video I'm so excited to get my first nucs it's almost time!!! I only hope I can match your success winter is tough in our state ...
Great work on everything
Thanks!
Huge fan till the end of time
I've definitely learned since watching your channel and then getting my own bees that beekeepers can be pretty mean to each other for doing things differently. It's crazy. I like the advice so I know I have options.. but ultimately it comes down to what you want to do and if it works. Which is exactly what the prez of my local bee club kept saying.
Mr. Jim sorry to hear that 6&8 nuc died I was hoping that they did like mine didn't hear anything from them and then checked on them and they were alive but 6 out of 8 ain't bad
Well done 💕🐝
Woo hoo!! I've never been this early!!! 🤓🤓🤓
Well done! I love you to try the double queen hive model. Just pop a queen excluder on resource hive and a medium on top.
I tried supering a couple that way last fall in hopes to get a fall flow harvest, but we had NO fall flow last year. I'll try again this year.
@@vinofarm Thanks for you answer! :) I remember when you uncovered the surprise 2 queens hives. I was so surprised because I always thought 2 queens would kill each other. I remember thinking: "Jim throw a queen excluder between the two queens to make sure they do'nt meet and see what happens." After the video I googled "two queen hives" and saw it is a thing, especially up north. I was wanting to ask my uncle about them (he was a pro bee keeper in Winipeg Canada) but he pasted away before I did. I'm really looking forward to that experiment. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Germany
Your beard looks full on spring ready! 👌
Nice job. You should do a full episode on what mite treatments you implement over the season. It’s a significant factor in the successful overwintering of bees, especially in view of the role bee fat bodies play in longevity and bee health.
I post everything I do. This is it:
Mite Treatment: ua-cam.com/video/68nP0GTbrDo/v-deo.html

Vino Farm - looks like we do the same thing: apivar strips in late summer (August/Sept.) then sublimate OA when little to no brood. I use apivar in March/April. I haven’t had to do anything during May, June, July. I haven’t lost a hive for 2 full seasons applying this method. Seems to work.
😂😂
When are you installing, mini mics and cams into the hives, so we can permanently spy and listen to the hum?
Just kidding, great to see things so positive there...
I would like to get to know him personally because he seems like a cool person to hang with.😎🙂🙂
The waggle dance wasn’t perfect in this case 😂
I don't think waggle dancing coordinates include elevation!
Vino Farm It’s funny picturing the bees flying all around bouncing off each other thinking I know I counted the turns and wiggles correctly where is the pollen and nectar? Just like when the GPS says you’ve arrived at your destination but you don’t see it anywhere so you ride around in circles. The bees are just amazing the way they communicate with each other 😲
@@vinofarm Correct. Direction and distance only.... That we know of.
I am one for four hives this year. Have you thought about trying out Saskatraz? They're becoming more and more popular in Minnesota. The hive that survived was a Saskatraz. It's been my experience that the Italians have a tough time making it through the winter.
I'm finding that the breed of bee isn't as important as the management of what you have. Key things to address are mite treatment and hive strength. Next, I am a big believer in moisture management with vivaldi boards and insulation. I'm finding that winter survival rate is similar across breeds so long as you have good management, but the breeds definitely perform differently as far as honey production goes. I'd be interested in trying Saskatraz, but it would be more to see how they differ with honey storage. After a few generations, my bees are becoming 'vinofarm' mutts at this point.
I’ve been following you because I live in Alaska and I did all the same things 2 of 4 alive. This is my first year. One that died was wrecked by yellow jackets and the other went queenless late season and I think that there wasn’t enough brood to hatch and didn’t make it. I’ll do all the same things again next year. Keep it up love your videos
I did a few last year, they were weak but turned out my strongest last year. Last year was real cold and harsh.
i told you. Believe in yourself.
Oh yes that reminds me! I am under the impression that the bulbs you planted a year ago last fall never came up last spring. Did you plant more or might they come up this spring? We can't do bulb plants in Florida - unless they are dug up each year and put in a brown paper bag and refrigerated for so long then put in the freezer for a while and then etc etc. - I've never done it but there is a recipe and some actually do it.
I'm sure there is more than one tree popping lol congrats
This is the only Silver Maple I know in the neighborhood. Everything else is Red Maples and they're a couple weeks after.
I dont know if you have any. But around us daffodils and snow drops are blossoming this time of year. You might want to see if those will grow in your climate
Izices Daffodils are still underground. Snowdrops were popping up through the leaves in the woods a few days ago, but no flowers open yet.
