    Great video,
There is no need for "Load Shedding" in South Africa, we just need the money to be used correctly. Unfortunately we have corruption in our government so here are suggestions.
    1. Load Shedding should be used for Industrial areas ONLY. Homes do not consume enough energy to be called a crisis. Also bigger companies can afford bigger and better generators to keep the economy moving while the country's electricity is standing still.
    2. Government should supply homes with safe and secure UPS systems to power up houses and small businesses for FREE.
    3. Nuclear energy as you mentioned...
If South Africa is backwards regarding power, the only reason I see we are being held back is the corruption in our government. Even though South Africa is in debt, we still have the means to go Nuclear and supply UPS systems in homes and stop "Load Shedding"
I wish and hope this beautiful country with all its potential will put aside our differences and come together to work together and grow together.

I like your gameplan. Some thoughts of my own on it -
      1. Industrial areas unfortunately employ most people and produce most of our GDP - if they get affected by loadshedding the entire country suffers financially.
      2. Nice idea! Quite expensive...
      3. YES, but not in a shady Russian deal like the one we almost had under Zuma to build nuclear power plants.
But as you said, if the money was just used correctly without corruption we'd be far better off.
Thanks for your detailed thoughts!!!! :)

@@mitch7w Thanks Mitch, my reason for Industrial Areas is due to the fact that they can afford high quality generators to back them up when the time comes to "save" our electricity.

Note the one method to resolve.the issue. Give homes free ups. Once again give for free. You must understand the answer is corruption . I am speaking from experience from.working with Eskom. The two stations you mention are new and not commissioned due to incorrect design lack of skilled staff . The one unit at Mendupi constant problems with conveying systems. Kusile Constant commissioning errors . The reason coal fired stations built because the areas have huge coal reserves. Are you aware of the costings of nuclear power stations build , off shore wind farms , wave power , solar. We do not have manufacturing capabilities in RSA for these generating units . We have to import 90% of the systems items . Most stations have 6 units installed . KENDAL , DUHVA , TUTUKA, MATIMBA , MAJUBA , KRIEL , SHOULD IF ALL SIX OPREATE AT 100 % capacity take average unit should generate 620 Meg each unit. HENDRINA MORE INSTALLED NOT 100% SURE BUT I THINK 10 UNITS . I HAVE UNDERTAKEN WORK ON MOST STATIONS ON THE SERVICE SIDE OR SUPPLY OF OEM SPARES . THESE SPARES HAVE BEEN DESIGNED BY OEMs so when purchased and installed it should return the unit back to full.OEM SPEC. THERE ARE SET PROCEDURES FOR RE COMMISSIONING A UNIT AFTER SERVICE / REPAIR. SEVERAL STATIONS

The first thing that needs to be addressed is the corruption… there needs to be actual Consequences for corrupt officials. The biggest problem with corruption is that it’s happening in every sector in this country,, we even have people still money from NASFAS funds… students are being kicked out of universities just because some greedy people wanted some fancy cars .. 😷to be honest I don’t think protesting can change anything, people in this country have been protesting for years

I have a somewhat radical idea, break off the generation capacity of Eskom into mixed private and public generators. There after build about 16 CANDU9 reactors follow that up by creating a direct subsidy for energy saving appliances, roof top solar, wind farms and private green energy efforts. There investments can be made into desalination as a form of co generation with these nuclear plants.

I'm not very savvy when it comes to news and corru... politics, so I wanted to find out more about the electrical infrastructure in the country.
Eskom's disastrous management kept cropping up in my study material...so I became curious. When I saw an extract about the power plants that where so delayed I was confused and shocked why they decided to go with coal.
I'm no electrical engineer but coal fired power stations are so old school, I couldn't understand why they didn't go nuclear. Yes Nuclear is not the best solution (long term), but it is a hell of a lot more efficient and "cleaner" than coal.

I want an explanation of how a power plant deals with demand
The output of power needs to remain at 60Hz meaning a turbine is not allowed slow down
The reason that power stations explode is from over voltage. Each light switch and geyser and oven is a small bit of continuity which reduces the resistance between points live and neutral and that will caused transformers to heat up and explode (plugging in a 2000W appliance to a 20A breaker will trip the breaker because of the low resistance)
But the solution is... Not connecting more households to the same substation or ringsub.
    Loadshedding looks suspicious to me

At 12:52 “that’s bullshit!” seems to capture the entire problem. Edited: looked up the production of energy by fuel type and according to IEA, South Africa is overwhelmingly coal generated electricity. The blackouts make no sense to me, it implies corruption and mismanagement on a wide scale. Let me hazard a guess that the utility has an elevated purpose to provide political patronage jobs, revenues are impacted by high degree of theft of electricity, and government officials take their share either above or below the table?

The pollution could be resolved if the precips had been maintained emissions would be reduced. Our stations use coal because most stations built on coal fields. When run in a manner that full P.M is undertaken like it was in the past we would not have load shedding. We have direct knowledge undertaking service for Eskom . Unless the new COE is allowed to clean up the underhand dealings that prevail on most stations outages will be on going.

    • @michaelroebuck1340
      @michaelroebuck1340 2 роки тому

We work on several stations or undertake work for them on service. The stations most have 6 turbine sets , Tutuka , Kendal, Duhuva , Kriel , Kusile Mendupi, Majuba, Matimba , Matla.Kendal. Lethabo, are around say able to.supply around 610 Meg each if fully operating capacity. Grootvlei also 6 units Komati same. Hendrina more but lower output. This station is one of the older ones. A major problem is when services undertaken they often do not use OEM PARTS. THIS OFTEN LEADS TO FAILURE ON RESTART. Specifications are very tight on rotary plant slight incorrect clearances can cause failure because incorrect lubrication to totary parts. Various reasons given from buyers or other involved but in our experience it involves corruption. Some times openly blatant other times those involved will make an argument why local made parts installed. Kusile / Mendupi years behind commissioning dates and massive problems when commissioning. Mendupi recently blew up a complete unit. This will not be ready to bring back on service for more than another two years minimum. All parts must be imported. We do not have manufacturing facilities here to supply parts for the Gen Sets. Same Applies on nuclear sets. These are imported from France. Delivery by sea most part not off the shelf parts and technical specs very high. I assume you are aware that several stations shut down over 25 years back because Eskom advised we had over supply of power ,???? Some recommissioned at high cost because not decommissioned in a correct manner , water left in pipe work which caused millions to replace. We do not have staff , coded welders , qualified engineer staff. Corrupt buyers and service staff. One error or poor service methods used when mothballed. No quick fix for Eskom. Agree that stations are a disgrace on manner of cleaning removal of ash. Our coal is of high Sulphur content so if ash gets wet you now have additional problem turns into sulphuric acid. Which eats steel causing failures on parts of plant. Incorrect quality of coal , causes damage to boiler grates. Have seen on some stations that poor quality coal turned into what looked like volcanic glass and had to call in special list teams to blast this out of boiler grates. With over 50 years service on rotary plant I have seen things on Eskom Plants that scare the pants off me. Report these and risk your life. So do not truvialise the mess Eskom is in. There is no quick fix but it will take hard decisions by top management, engineers who have high ethics , not afraid to face up to their colleagues who are known to be corrupt, employment of staff who can make hard professional decisions and not be afraid to stand up to those who support and are corrupt. Make no error it is not one person on site but consortiums who are involved both here and overseas .

41.66% less development & maintenance = 41.66% more liklihood of breakdowns & failures.
41.66% more breakdowns & failures = 41.66% more liklihood of loadshedding.
AND SO THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL CONTINUES TOWARDS COLLAPSE!!!
When are we, the people, going to take matters into our own hands and at least sue the government & escom for failing in their constitutional obligation to provide the consumer with uninterrupted energy. I repeat : their CONSTITUTIONAL obligation!!! C'mon people. Lets get this done!!

Oh man! You can imagine how those reactors look inside. Here by us we have people working around the clock cleaning the reactors. it is also very dangerous work. You have to dress like you are going to the moon and only 15 minutes p/p is aloud to work in the reactors.
