MTV were not racist, they played the Specials twice on their very first air date, and they played several black artist before MJ in 1983, became the first black artist to be placed in heavy rotation. She was not one of the first females to break through either. Donna Summer, The Pointer Sisters, Tina Turner, Shelia E, were among the first and had multiple videos played, and in heavy rotation as well.
How rare is it for someone to have the face and body of a supermodel and once in a lifetime voice? Not to mention her charismatic personality. There will never be another Whitney Houston

it's odd MTV. bc. Downtown Julie Brown she's Black? Whitney now that I've seen things about her & she can be very mean spirited whether it's bc of the Drugs? Idk but her & her mom making fun of Paula Abdul who's actually middle eastern? saying she's off key? she can't sing! & most of her videos have blacks in them!!! then she hates Janet Jackson!!! bc she's jealous bc Bobby & her where in love!!!!
It's a stupid comment, because MTV didn't have to play the video, they could do what they wanted. But they were always going to play top video on their weekly countdown. She just bitter because her first 2 videos (which were ballads) didn't make MTV's rotation list (thus were not played by the station).

It boggles my mind that this very talented lady who sang on some of the most popular 90s songs (can’t forget Everybody Everybody and Strike It Up) is so unknown only because of her weight at the time. Omgosh same. I'm an insomniac and here I am. I was always a fan although at this time as a young kid I listened to rock, but I always admired and recognized Whitney. She was undeniable and very motherly too. Definitely had a soothing voice.

Great interview! Definitely one of her realest, and most opinionated interviews. She had a lot to say and elaborate on. And didn't hold back. Love when she said she loves it when they have NO CHOICE but to play her and not deny her. She really took pride in that and that point.

ogkush1916 The Heavy rotation barrier came down in 1983. MJ was the first black (male) March, Donna was the first black (female) August. Whitney didn't get played in Heavy rotation until mid january 1986 with How Will I Know, which was the 20th video by a black female artist to be placed in heavy rotation; 2 years and 5 months after Donna. By that time, Donna was the first to have 3 consecutive videos placed in Heavy rotation, The Pointer Sister and Tina Turner also had 3 consecutive videos placed in Heavy rotation, Tina did it twice having (6) videos in total, Pointer Sister (4), Sheila E had (2). Those are leading faces (black females) when it comes to breaking down the colour barrier on MTV. NOT Whitney Houston, Whitney also was not prominent on MTV. Her first 2 videos didn't get played on MTV, then she had 2 videos played on MTV. Then, it was 14 months before she had another video in rotation, videos for Didn't We Almost Have it All & One Moment In Time, were dropped after 2 weeks in rotation . Her 3rd album had the first video played on MTV (IYBT), the subsequent 4 videos (did make MTV's rotations list) were not played on MTV. It would be another 2 years before she had videos played on MTV. Tina Turner and Janet Jackson were prominent black female artist on MTV, like MJ, Madonna & Prince. That just how things went...

However, I was a teen in Brooklyn, and we had MTV on day and night and we watch mainly because of Whitney and Michael. Her first video on MTV was You Give Good Love in and we ran to the livingroom everytime it came on. She was so different from anyone else that was out there, so yes she was groundbreaking.

I want to share what I think is her most phenomenal, most powerful and most exhausting (in a great way) love performance. It's a 1986 live concert performance in London (a cover version of 'I AM CHANGING', from the broadway show Dreamgirls)
She unleashes the FULL WEIGHT of her superhuman vocal prowess for over 10 minutes. It is a true vocal spectacle that NO-ONE can top. Luciano Pavorotti himself would approve. She gives you Broadway, operatic grandeur (both male tenor and female operatic head notes) and fiery gospel (her root) all in one earthquake/tsunami of a live performance.
You MUST Set aside 15 mins of undivided attention, put your headphones in at full volume and take this roller-coaster thrill park ride of a vocal performance. You may need to sign a waiver first! It is THAT ridiculous and unreal. I'd love to hear your reaction after listening.

Whitney was extremely intelligent and well spoken, especially when she talks about music. Her best interviews were when people would ask her about music and the industry. She was a brilliant musician and one of the best to ever hit the stage

And that is part of what made her so great. As good and confident as she was in her own ability she was still able to genuinely appreciate others. True confidence tampered by true humility will always be outstanding. IMO a person like that can always be inspired afresh and never fall into the trap of comparison that (especially in the arts) has the tendency to kill creativity and growth.

I wish she would've replaced all those Bobby Brown mentions to Janet Jackson. Control album was huge in 1986 and she was definitely one of the breakthrough black artists on MTV.
The break through artists are from 1983/84 until MTV changed to a top 40 format in November of 1984...not 1986. But Janet was definitely a prominent MTV artist like that of Madonna, Prince and her brother.
Actually, Control is more of an second generation of MTV (Along with George Michael, Bon Jovi, Paula Abdul, etc.). It would probably make more sense if she had mentioned Sade Adu or Cyndi Lauper.
Janet is my girl and Control is my fav, so I thought so too.. but then realised it was released in 1986. But the era being talked about is specifically 1983-1984: Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Donna Summer, Whitney Houston etc

When the interviews would focus on music Whitney’s genius would come out. You could tell she really knew her stuff (both about music making and the business side of the industry). I think she would’ve been an excellent judge on American Idol or one of those shows

No disrespect to Bobby's artistry, but I don't know if he should be mentioned in the same sentence as a Michael, Madonna or Whitney with regards to MTV's impact. This was pure evidence that Whitney was conscious of his insecurity, thus placing him in the same caliber as herself.
Bobby was a huge star in the late 80's, and that is the era she was talking about. I'm not a fan of Bobby's as a person, but his impact on R&B and Pop music was enormous during that time.

Thanks for posting this. Just to give you younger crowd a bit more of context, in 2001 MTV released a huge special for MTV's 21st anniversary where they went through the history of the channel, pop music and music videos up to that point. There were appearances by guest stars like Mariah and Whitney, and this whole interview is where MTV got all the Whitney appearances from. I wish I could watch Mariah's interview.

It's mindblowing to think that she was that stunning and beautiful despite all the cigarettes and drugs that she did in her life. One might assume that with the type of toxic lifestyle that she had, the damage would be quite noticeable but she was truly a beautiful woman up until her last years. Gorgeous woman!

Ever song is like a great painting. It has to tell a story. It is composed of light and dark colors. Mrs Houston was the amazing voice if the 1900s no one could touch her. She reached down inside the heart and moved all your emotions. I can't command the English language well enough to express her greatness with singing. She will always be my favorite. Sure do mess hearing her on the radio. I'm sure she was burnt out by forty five years old. The whole world will suffer from her absence.

You can look at her early interviews and see that. She didn't do her interviews high. Not even in the interview where she cussed Wendy Williams out or when she did the Diane Sawyer interview even though people think they know what goes on in someone's life because of gossip.
So effortlessly ! This is why she is the greatest singer to ever exist . Even any singer will tell you that . No one can compare to nippy . NOBODY ! this right here (Which was a rehearsal) To hear that voice live on stage in all its wonder was truly something to witness. Actually, she sounded better live than she did on recordings, if you can imagine that. Live, she had more freedom to express her feelings, and she was able to improvise much more. And the power that came from her voice was amazing; in my opinion, the physical effort that she put into every performance was unequaled.
