Walking the Straightest Line Across Scotland | World Record [Part 2]

  • Closed captions are available. I know it's tough to hear my support crew in a few places.
    I leave the perfectly placed haven of the Finnich Cottages to continue my second attempt at crossing Great Britain in a straight line. The conditions remained absolutely perfect and I wasn't about to let them go to waste! Say hello to a few new characters in my rag-tag group of supporters as I explore some of the countryside that ‪@GeoWizard‬ didn't quite reach two years ago.
    As much as possible, the line steers clear of population centres and the time of year was carefully chosen to avoid lambing, calving and crops. There is a "right to roam" in Scotland but everyone who indulges has to do so responsibly. Although I certainly pushed the boundaries of what is allowed during this mission, I took many precautions to minimise the chance of upsetting anyone or damaging the land. If you're planning a similar adventure then please do the same. I also do some pretty stupid things on this leg of my adventure. Please know that some parts were very dangerous and that I have had specialist training in many of the skills needed. You undertake such activities at your own risk.
    Thanks to Jack for his unstoppable spirit of adventure, Katherine for her legal advice (which I ignored), Rob for showing me how to jump fences, and Staff for teaching me how to hide.
    Here's a link to my first attempt, which didn't go so well

    Sorry this took so long to upload. There are a couple of reasons:
    1. I had serious knee pain in the days following this attempt. After publishing Part 1 I found out I had a torn meniscus, so I've been dealing with that... A few upcoming adventures have been cancelled as a result but I hope to have it patched up in time for the big one mentioned at the end of the video
    2. I've been travelling a lot. Some trips for work and some for pleasure, but the next 4 videos are filmed and ready to edit! (Slightly less physical than this one, of course)
    3. Copyright issues (yay). I've been holding myself to higher editing standards with each video and it's become a major time drain. To save time lately I haven't written any of my own music - like I did for the Tube video - but this led to some unexpected claims on "copyright free" tracks when I first uploaded this. That was 2 weeks ago but they've finally been released, so here it is for your enjoyment!

      You're editing is really great and the extra effort is really noticeable.
      For music, its worth doing a deep dive into the UA-cam music library as you won't run into any copyright issues at all there.
      Keep up the outstanding work! Looking forward to more adventures. 🙂

    I have to say, no exaggeration whatsoever, that this was THE most entertaining and fun straight line mission video ever! Every single element was literally incredible; the entire family team effort, the insanely good preparedness and planning, the abseil (and brilliant lego reconstruction!), the moving map in the corner throughout so we can follow your position easier and the great editing! (although maybe at a few points the music was a bit too dramatic?! haha)
    I could keep going on for days if I needed to, this is just the cream of the cream of the crop of straight line missions! To me, it’s really disgraceful that you only have 600 views and 14 comments and it shows that most people only enjoy straight line mission videos because most people exaggerate stuff way too much, but you’re the opposite to that in that you’re a proper genuine and kind guy who involves your family, and for me that’s what makes you the best! Keep at it, make sure to keep promoting this video on subreddits!

    Really enjoyed that. After a few orienteering encounters with Touch and the moors above, it was sobering to see how easy you made it look and that much of what preceded it was harder (gulp!).Excellent production.

    35:40 It was nice to hear you give some praise to Geowizard here. It irked me when the Fieldhouses were dissing him on the Wales run. Although they've proven to be formidable straight line missioners, so they've since earned the banter!
    Love your vids, like GW but with a different endearing regional accent and like 70% more wholesomeness. I just found them, but if you keep missioning I'll keep watching :)
    Edit: Wait no Berdell Score?? HAve you analysed the line since?

    Really great production value. I don't know how you overlay the map in the corner, but seeing the map and first person perspective it really cool, it feels like watching a GTA mission. Also very funny. I feel a lot of people would be entertained by straight line mission videos, and this one in particular, if more people knew about them.

    Congrats Ally. top class entertainment! The editing was superb, it really does show in the final product. Well done on the planning.
    Sticking to the theme of straight line missions, no mission is complete without a camera malfunction in the most interesting part of the line ;)
    Heal up for the torn meniscus. Do you think it was from the final leap off the castle ground?

      I think you’ve nailed it. At least that’s our working theory - it’s hard to know for sure.
      We’d thought about a second, smaller abseil there but decided it would draw unwanted attention in the city…
      Thanks for the feedback!

    Very nicely done. I tried to imagine that walk over the last hill in pouring rain (mainly because I got hit by a major rainstorm just when I was out in Culloden Battlefield), and I guess it would have been a very valid reason to abort the mission.
    Anyway, nice scenery, great editing, and some very nice memories of my first vacation in Scotland back in the early 2000's, which brought me to Glasgow, Edinburgh and... yep, Stirling.

    • @allys_adventures
      @allys_adventures  Рік тому +2

      Hey, thanks!
      I don’t know how much interest there is in a full line review but I’ll definitely think about it. You can see the Burdell score already near the end of the video just before the distance & time stats.
      For line selection I used what I think is a new technique: playing connect-the-dots with isolated hotels (places I could feasibly walk through that aren’t surrounded by houses)

      @@allys_adventures Re: some of your other videos, did you automate line selection somehow with Python scripts/open maps data? Seems like that could really revolutionize the straight-line "sport". If so, I would be interested in a video about that as well.

    • @allys_adventures
      @allys_adventures  Рік тому +2

      @@steveosborne3669, are you referring to the talk on my channel? I did exactly that for some of my city lines!
      However, I found the countryside too difficult to classify into passable/impassable
      e.g. some but not all mountains are passable, some walls/fences, not all farmland (in good conscience), so this line was planned completely manually.
