I find it interesting that you're #1 was your first introduction to Dinosaur Jr. And so is mine. But mine is You're Living All Over Me. Where You Been is my #2.
I’ve only listened to Farm and I absolutely love it. Therefore, I was very surprised to see it so low on the list. With Farm being as good as it is, the albums you claim surpass it in quality must truly be amazing. Guess I have some listening to do. Great video, man. Very entertaining!
Great reviews! I have to admit "What Else is New" is my favorite Dino Jr. song. And "Where you Been" might be their best... I still think of Dino Jr as part of the Sonic Youth "NO WAVE" type music, but they were something else the whole time! IMHO
I enjoyed that you aren’t necessarily a purist with Dino. There newer records are pretty darn great. The only disagreement is I would have had bug at 2 or 3 but very nice list man, enjoyed !
I’ve listened to five Dinosaur Jr. albums over the last week, so it put me in the mood to rank their discography. 12. Without a Sound (1994) 11. Sweep It into Space (2021) 10. Dinosaur (1985) (definitely raw, but has more energy and purpose than the bottom two) 9. Hand It Over (1997) (I only really like the opener; the experiments go over poorly; “Alone” sounds huge, but I think the chorus is weak) 8. Farm (2009) 7. I Bet on Sky (2007) 6. Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not (2016) 5. Green Mind (1991) 4. Where You Been (1993) 3. Beyond (2007) (a surprisingly fantastic reunion album; #193 in my top 200 albums of the 2000s) 2. Bug (1988) (#57 in my top 200 albums of the 1980s) 1. You’re Living All Over Me (1987) (#13 in my top 200 albums of the 1980s) They were one of the pioneering indie rock acts of the 1980s, which is why I hold their two SST albums in such high regard. With Green Mind, they switched to a major label and almost immediately cleaned up their sound, losing that essence that I find so iconic (I’ve always favoured their classic sound over their actual songwriting; I think there are many rock bands who write better hooks than Dinosaur Jr., but few who sounded as cool as they did in the late 80s).
Agree with the sound I totally loved that crazy blend of metal/punk/indie rock? Yes indie from back in the day took me a minute to live the stuff after that but live it’s amazing!
Music is subjective, but everyone (except Henry Rollins) overlooks the complex music, and introspective lyrics on the first "DINOSAUR" album. And the use of personas, although some of the songs on "Dinosaur" have to be auto biographical... Some of these records I have yet to listen to!! Like "Give A Gimps of what Yer Not" Never knew it happened! You are correct about Hard Core influence, especially on mixes of "Dinosaur" and "Green Mind" That was a style. I still do not like rich bass in the music I listen too. It sounds over produced to me. But your right: J. makes a lot of comments in interviews about how he could not decide how to mix "Green Mind" saying: "It was just bad in a different way each time" IMHO
When I was a young stoner skater kid in the 90's who religiously watched 120 Minutes every Sunday on Mtv, their albums from Green Mind to Hand It Over was Dinosaur Jr for me. I did not look back to YLAOM and Bug until the mid 90's and did not really appreciate them as much until I got a bit older after their hiatus and now I feel they are up there in the top 5. The 4 new reunited studio albums are quite solid but yeah, as much as I dig them, they would go at the bottom. Do like I Bet On Sky more than you. J Mascis' favorite Dinosaur Jr albums are YLAOM and Hand It Over.
I absolute love Dinosaur Jr. and love the other J Mascis work as well. My favourite Album ist Where You Been. But if you ask me in six months this can change. There are so many great Dino albums. Very consistent catalog
Interesting! I had a feeling you’d like the spit-up lineup better the way you talked about the first few albums. I have been experiencing the same thing going back, after murph and lou got kicked out j truly started to soar
Hey Jason! Just now seeing this. I wish I had seen it sooner, it would have informed my predictions for your Albums of the Year. Still might serve in that regard! By the way, your onscreen presence and confidence has improved quite a bit since you made this.
Dino is my favorite band. I love J's style of playing and as a guitar player, I really enjoy playing his riffs and solos. Not a terrible list, but Without a Sound can't touch YLAOM. J was a little lost in the 90s without the original members and it shows on that album the most imo. Here's my list: 1.YLAOM 2.Bug 3.Green Mind 4.Beyond 5.Where You Been? 6.Glimpse 7.Hand it Over 8.Farm 9.I Bet on Sky 10.Sweep it Into Space 11.Without a Sound 12.Dinosaur
I'm not saying this as a negative, not in the least.... but whenever I stumble upon one of these solo videos I am really amazed at how much you have perfected your craft within the span of a few years. Pretty much the same thing I would say about many of my favorite bands/artists.
12. Dinosaur (1985) 11. Farm (2009) 10. I Bet on Sky (2012) 9. Give a Glimpse of What You’re Not (2016) 8. Sweep it Into Space (2021) 7. Without a Sound (1994) 6. Green Mind (1991) 5. You’re Living All Over Me (1987) 4. Hand it Over (1997) 3. Beyond (2007) 2. Bug (1988) 1. Where You Been (1993)
I am trying so hard to find the album that has Tumblin Tumbleweed on it. The best album they ever made! Lol It's like they made it vanish, and never to see the sun again. It had a puppet nose curling into a spiral on the cover album. Definitely old school. If you by chance know where to find this, please let me know! Thank You :)
Totally agree Hand It Over is so underrated and overlooked. Mick and Never Bought It are killer tracks. Alone is one of the best Dinosaur Jr. solos ever. Also agree that I Bet On Sky was weak although not bad. Personally their weakest album. My list would probably be: 11. I Bet On Sky 10. Beyond 9. Farm 8. Dinosaur 7. Hand It Over 6. Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not 5. Where You Been 4. Bug 3. Green Mind 2. Without A Sound 1. You're Living All Over Me
Good list, but Ah man, Farm has some of my favorite production on a Dinosaur Jr album. The mix is as close to their live performances as they ever got on a record. I've always personally thought it was overlooked in that respect. It's like being surrounded by a fog of guitar grit held aloft by the thick bass, only punctured by sharp guitar leads and punchy pounding drums that only seem to occasionally pierce through. To me it's like being pounded by waves in an ocean of noise. That levity when J hangs on that slow transition chord in the middle of Ocean in the Way, and the rest of the song drifts away, before going into the solo, just ooh, gives me shivers. Seeing them live is like being buried in a coffin of sound. Production wise it actually gives me very heavy Hum - Downward is Heavenward vibes, though that's a much darker heavier album.
I won't say that you're wrong. I've seen them live and you're right that Farm might be the closest to that sound. Guess it just comes down to taste and I prefer a bit more clarity in mixes. Especially because J has one of the most underrated and expressive voices in rock which can be swallowed up in the wash of guitar fuzz sometimes...although I get that that's kind of the point. It's a balancing act.
