    Hey Jay, I got this saxophone a couple of weeks ago, as I finally decided to get started with this life-long dream. Apparently, something went wrong during Fedex shipping and was slightly damaged. Mr. Zenderman, this company's president, IMMEDIATELY send me a replacement sax, he also took his time explaining many things about the instrument, and I was in awe with this superb Customer Service. This sax is definitely a bargain for the price! I can't wait to start with your courses and the one-on-one classes with you. Cheers!

      that's great to hear. I've heard this from so many people and that's one of the main reasons I have no hesitation recommending the Jean Paul instruments. It's great to know that somebody cares about the customer even when it's not a very expensive instrument.

    • @yourbarista
      @yourbarista 4 роки тому +13

      I also rec'd a slightly damaged tenor, and customer service was prompt in replying to my email, though I didn't rate attention from the president or any explanations. Ultimately, Jean Paul came through, but not without some frustration. I did hear quickly from two different people. The first said he'd let me know where to send the instrument for repair 'tomorrow'. Three days later I'd still heard nothing, and wrote again. I heard from another person this time, who said he'd send me a return label 'tomorrow,' and again I heard nothing for a few days. I'd heard only good things about their customer service, but with that second email I was beginning to worry. What was especially frustrating, and potentially a bit embarrassing, was that, though the sax was unplayable, it really seemed to me it was probably a minor adjustment issue. Trouble is, I know nothing about how to adjust a saxophone, so return seemed the only option. The good news is that Jean Paul did send me the return label, and the sax is now on its way to Florida. Here's hoping the repaired instrument can survive shipping this time around. Jean Paul does seem to merit their excellent reputation. Incidentally, Jay sounded great on the Jean Paul, even with the mediocre mouthpiece. I have a strong suspicion I'll still only be able to make noises few would recognize as music.

    What would you estimate the longevity of the brass to be vs a higher quality instrument?

    • @b.smitty5273
      @b.smitty5273 5 років тому +3

      In my experience as a teacher so far, they are great for my students to start on, but sometimes the arms on the larger keys can warp slightly. This mainly means it will need some more maintenance and the maintenance can be slightly more expensive due to less tuneability. Also corks tend to be cheaper so they might need to be replaced a bit sooner than and on a horn ten times the price. So if you want to start playing imho its a great option. It should last you at least a year of playing without having to take it to the repair shop. Hope this kinda answered your question :)

    I just bought one the end of last month and it took almost 3 weeks to arrive. Popped out of the box last night and excitedly put it together and took a blow. Couldn’t make but a squawk out of the horn. Few hi register know it’s nothing on the bottom end. Changed Reid‘s mouth pieces every adjustment I could think of, but to no avail. Took it to my local technician this morning and they said the body is bent. Not worth trying to adjust on A brand new Horn. Very disappointed. Tried to set up an exchange through Amazon and they don’t have a horn to exchange it with. So I’ll be sending this one unfortunately back where it came from.

    I've had the TS-400 for about a year and I can't say enough good things about it! I have been playing a Selmer Series Action II (~$7000) for 25 years and I find, to my great surprise, the sound from this sax to be superior! It arrived with a screw missing on the C key, which was quickly corrected after contacting customer service. I am VERY pleased with this instrument and find myself exclusively playing the tenor these days. Construction wise, It has been holding well , producing a lovely tone! I strongly recommend saving your money and purchase this sax.

Seems to be perfectly set up. I can play every note (that I know how to play). Quality very close to my Yamaha YAS-280. I love it. Hi, I’m in high school now and I’ve been playing clarinet for 4 years. Last year in marching band, someone let me play their tenor sax, and it was a lot of fun! Especially it being like a clarinet, only the finger notes on the saxophone are like that of a clarinet on a high register. I’m really grateful for this video because I’m so close to purchasing the Jean Paul saxophone and it looks especially promising for it’s price! Yeah! I’m really excited!

    Purchased my Jean Paul about one month ago. I did not care for the stock mouth piece, a very stuffy sound. The cork on the neck needed some sanding as it was to big. I purchased a Theo Wanne slant sig #7 with great improvement. A great sax for the price. Lloyd from Ohio

    Jay -- Great review and very helpful for a range of player abilities. As a long-time performing jazzer, I was looking for an affordable backup tenor. In 2020, I purchased the TS-400 directly from Jean Paul. You're right, they offer great customer service and they genuinely support musicians of all stripes. The sax arrived in perfect condition and was set up and ready to play out of the box. I encountered a couple nit-picky issues as you did, but my local shop took care of these few minor tweaks in a couple of minutes. (Surprise... I had to do this with my Yamaha as well).
    My primary horn is a Yamaha YTS-875EX --- as you know, an absolutely superb instrument. I play tested and compared the two tenors and was pleasantly surprised. This may seem like a bit of a stretch, but I can honestly report that the similarities of these two horns far outweigh their differences... especially after installing my Yamaha V1 neck and my Theo Wanne mouthpiece on the Jean Paul.
    It is now four years later and the TS-400 still plays fantastic. Other than the annual shop tune-up that all saxophones require if played regularly, I have had zero issues with the Jean Paul. If it weren't for the subtle differences in the ergonomics of these horns, the joy of playing this great Jean Paul tenor and the beautiful music it creates are certainly comparable to my professional saxophone. Thanks much for your detailed reviews on UA-cam. You are a valued resource for many aspiring and professional musicians. Warm regards, Dr. A

      For your first sax, you might want to start with an alto. It is MUCH lighter, half the price and has plenty of range -- mostly the human vocal range. It is also easier on the lower lip. Start with a soft reed 1 1/2 or 2 and work up from there as you toughen your lower lip.

However, if you are experienced return student returning after years (or experienced, trying saxophone for the first time), I think the small flaws will add up for you. Having said that, the most impressive aspect of Jean Paul is their customer service. Even when returning their sax, I thought their customer service was excellent.

    Jay, I love you so much but come on, first thing that happened in the presentation was the saxophone was put down on the wrong side. I mean obviously, you were just giving the better body shot which makes sense, but please - if you come across my message - PLEASE mention to the viewers how bad putting the sax down like that can be for the body. I have a friend who puts his tenor down on the wrong side and I have always told him not to and his YANY'S BELL BENT 😢

    Fair enough to say, that the difference of the sound is not as big as the difference of the price..!!! A good musician as you "porns" a cheap sax into the stratosphere.......!👍🚀 Well done.

    I bought the silver tenor a month ago and my only regret is not buying it sooner! I watched this video and another UA-camrs (sorry Jay!) at least 300 times before finally pulling the trigger on one. My sax arrived in 3 days, is super responsive, BEAUTIFUL, and played right out of the box. I let the stigma of it not being a Selmer or Yamaha bother me for awhile and it almost kept me from a really great horn. If you’re on the fence go for it. It does not look or feel cheap in a shape way or form and I was really surprised by the quality and mad at myself for worrying about the “brand” name even though Jay gave it his blessing. I’m starting back on sax after a 20 year hiatus and so very grateful to have found this recommendation.

    Great video and great cooperation Jay ! There is a HUGE difference between the three saxophones and a huge difference between the two mouthpieces.
    I wonder, if I want to buy a tenor saxophone for beginners, but it is important that it be professional and hold it for years, which saxophone is the best and most recommended? Again, for beginners.
    I guess your mouthpiece and your reed are meant for professionals, so here too, which mouthpiece is most recommended for beginners in tenor sax (but no less professional)? Is there a huge difference between alto and tenor in the level of difficulty? weight?
    I'll be glad if you could do some video about that.
    Many thanks in advance!!
    Victorin.

    I bought one a few months ago after not playing for a long time, per several UA-cam reviews. Well, I'm not happy with it at all. Seems everything went south in a couple of months, including sticky keys, a stripped-out neck screw, and very questionable sound with a Yamaha 4c mouthpiece and 2.0 synthetic reed or Rico thin-cut reeds. I'm going to a used Yamaha YTS 23, which I should have purchased in the first place. Maybe, you can play this Asian junk, but I can't.

    Hey Jay! Sorry, but this post is off topic because I didn’t know whereabouts to put it. I’ve been noticing that there’s a fairly new sax on the market called the Nexxus saxes. These saxes are apparently light and also appear to play very well. Can you please do a review of these saxes (both alto and tenor) and give me your thoughts? This company is based in Boston, MA. Thank you keep up your great work.

    Thank you for your review!! I haven't played in years and just got this sax today (Jan 2021) based in no small part from your review. I played a Yanigisawa T-800 ages ago so was dubious of a "budget" horn. Like you, as I examined this horn upon opening it, was impressed with how well it was set up. In fact, the only thing I could find was that the right hand keys were ever so slightly not quite closing the bis key, but that was a 10 second adjustment. Also, I found no play in any keys on my example, and had no lacquer problems. I never tried the factory mouthpiece and went straight to a Vandoren V16 T7 rubber. Oh, and I'd add that the included neck strap is sketchy at best. I would NOT trust the plastic clasp for long. Other than my chops being nowhere near what they used to, I could immediately play this horn top to bottom. It felt quite free blowing and responsive with a great, rich tone and very snappy action. The key placement in a couple spots was "different" from what I remember on my Yani, but nothing too strange. I'm looking forward to getting back in shape. I can't recommend this horn enough, and thank you for your review and other awesome content.
