  • In this silversmithing tutorial, I go over my process for setting an "irregular" shaped turquoise stone in a ring.
    To secure my piece during the stone setting process, I am using an engraving block ball vise. Here is the link: amzn.to/3HsFWRU

    Wow you’re amazing! Beautiful!! I’m 17 and have started silversmithing to pursue my dreams of becoming a jeweller. I have so many questions and having some form of a mentor would be life changing. I was wondering as my first question… what’s the difference between fine silver and sterling silver? Are those the two types of silver or are there more?? Thankyou 🤍🤍🤍

    • @SpiritMountainSilver
      @SpiritMountainSilver  Рік тому +1

      Fine silver is 99.9% pure silver. It does not tarnish much however it is too soft and malleable to use IMO. Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper and is much more suited for jewelry making!

    Do you use sterling silver or fine silver for your bezel wire? And what gauge? Thank you!

      Was going to ask about the vise, and if there's a particular one that's good to get.

    Worked like a champ! I have the little one of those engraver's blocks... I'm guessing it would help the same way as your big one. Hope so.

      I’m sure it would! 😃 Regardless of the size, they are such an upgrade from the normal ring clamp!

    Thank you for the tips. How would you use the engraver’s block if you were setting a pendant as it wouldn’t fit in the same way.

    • @SpiritMountainSilver
      @SpiritMountainSilver  2 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to secure a pendant with the engravers block. Usually what I will do is close the two top pieces of the block together and simply rest my pendant on top and hold it in place as I set the stone!

    Love your work and your videos - very helpful! Question for you - before you set the stone do you anneal the piece to make the bezel easier to push over the stone? I'm thinking it must have gotten very work hardened - especially if it was put into a tumbler. Thanks!

    • @SpiritMountainSilver
      @SpiritMountainSilver  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you so much, I'm glad you found it helpful!! And I do not anneal the piece. I usually use 26-28 gauge fine silver for the bezel and I have found it remains relatively soft and easy to work with, even after being work hardened!

    Hello! Those are beautiful stamped embellishments! I am really struggling on that part. I am stamping into sterling silver… do I need to be using fine silver for the embellishments? Do you have a tutorial on the products needs to add those embellishments?

    • @SpiritMountainSilver
      @SpiritMountainSilver  2 роки тому +2

      Hi there! Thank you so much❤️ I like to use sterling silver for stamping, however I also anneal the silver first so it’s a bit softer and easier to work with. I also have to stamp it multiple times usually, but be careful doing this because you don’t want to double stamp the impression in two different locations! I’m going to make a video on how I make these- I’ve gotten a lot of requests for one!
