for Hollyleaf, the lack of sunlight simply reffers to how she is trapped in the tunnels where it is dark. But this could mean so much more if you think of it in the context that Sunlight is something good and Darkness is something bad. Imagine shutting out a window of your happiness and hope, and only getting glimpses and memories of how your happy life used to be. Such powerful and metaphorical lyrics!
"I wish I could change the way I am, being back friendships I lost cuz I was scared."
Again, fabulous lyrics, don't you think? And the tone in which she sings is is so perfect.
Next, later she says "I should give myself a chance"
She has, in the previous lyrics, validated the emotions of someone who feels lonesome or scared. Now, she is telling herself but also the listeners of the song that relate to her lyrics to try to overcome such dark feelings, which I think is very meaningful and well-written.
"I'm gonna follow the code but not too closely,"
This obviously referrs to the warrior code, but it could also make sense if you think of the code as some sort of norms that people are supposed to follow. Before, the singer felt trapped by these norms, which drove her into this state of sadness. Now, she's decided that it's alright to be herself when she says that she's not going to follow the code "too closely".
When she says that "a step in the light's got my whole body shaken," she's implying the emotion she feels when she is going back to try to be happy again. It is not easy for her, and I think that this line adds a lot of expression to the song! Then, she says "but here I am, no going back," and it shows her strength in character that she won't give up. I mean, at this point these song lyrics are literally getting better than Hollyleaf's novella itself.
When I first listened to this song a year ago and when I made this comment, some lyrics that resonated with me a lot were at 3:23. The "Do they care that I am gone?" shows a lot of the character's doubt in the song, but at the "can I show them that I am strong" she is showcasing the fact that she still believes in herself through her uncertainty. I feel as though this lyric later in the song, at 3:46, "I am who I am and they might hate me, but it's all Ill ever be" (aaaahhh my favorite part XD!!!!) also goes with that. The pitch of the song goes higher a little, which seems to indicate that hollyleaf is felling happier and maybe more sure of herself. It's so meaningful, I can't appreciate this perfect song enough.
And one last thing: Notice how the art gets brighter throughout the song? How cool!! Perhaps it's another metaphor about how Hollyleaf's happiness brightens the picture. I dunno...
Now excuse me while I listen to this song on repeat 1000 times.

this is so good. the vocals i don't even need to say anything- they're perfect. dawn clearly thought of hollyleaf's persona and put all she had into making it seem as close to her as possible. the cover art portrays emotion but it's slightly bland, just hollyleaf and little scenery, which is fine because the scene i think you're trying to mimic is a replica. i love hollyleaf so i'm p bias lol. the instrumental is a little boring but it goes w/ the lyrics and expression. it's also a lil quiet, but that may be intentional. and for the lyrics, wow. you've improved so much on the lyrics. you've kept the main idea in mind while writing these fantastic lyrics, rhyming goes well, and the flow is great. i like how you kept it strictly to hollyleaf's mindset while she was going through this time. i love this piece, please make more music!

This is great, but I do suggest, just as some light critisism- I suggest you try to rhyme the words more. It would sound a lot nicer ^^
Sure, it rhymes sometimes, but for the majority, it doesn't.
You can try finding words that rhyme but mean the same thing if you still want it to be almost the exact same.
Other than that, it was great 👌
Actually, having the words not rhyme all the time gives more variety and more spirit to the song as well as a sense of uncertainty and originality.

I personally think this song suits Hollyleaf. She did do a bad thing, but she was holding in so much pain after what Ashfur did, and this song in a way could be a way of venting out her feelings. (I think there maybe a little Hollyleaf in all of us in one way or another)
