It’s stressful to see all this unfold with no real answers yet. My uncle got me into hockey when I was 13 yrs old. he’s been a season ticket holder for over 20plus years. I truly hope they stay cuz hockey has been apart of his life for soo long now, he’s a hard worker, he’s very kept to himself at home, and during family events but when we go to these games , hes more open, and there’s a lot of joy . I’d be sad for him and my cousin if they relocate , it’s been a tradition that when every time me and my grandmother visit we watch the Coyotes. I hope and pray for a solution soon
Glad to see Brodie take all his skills reporting on the A's relocation saga and apply them to other teams facing the same dilemma. Goes to show that the situation in Oakland is not isolated: relocation threats are a nationwide problem, and the fans & taxpayers affected need to know how this relocation playbook works if they are going to make informed decisions about what's best for their community.
There's a few options for the Coyotes and it all really depends on Bettman's stance. -SLC sounds lucrative, but the city's infrastructure is lacking and the Jazz play in a 30 year old arena meant for basketball. I dont know if SLC is in a position for a state of the art multipurpose arena in the next 5-10 years. -If Bettman was hellbent on his "hockey in the south" experiment, Houston would be the logical choice. One of the largest cities in America and Texas is very persuasive when it comes to rooting for sports teams. Plenty of space for an arena if the Rockets are unwilling. -Quebec seems like a long shot. Not only is the Quebec province home to the Canadians, but the economy there leaves some discomfort for a billion dollar industry. -The state of Arizona caves and gives the Coyotes their own Arena as the Suns have stated they have no interest in housing the coyotes. This seems like the most unlikely outcome unfortunately. -Atlanta. For some reason the NHL cannot move on from Atlanta -KC,CLE,Hartford. These are also cities that had NHL franchises at one point and are way better fits location and weather wise to host another team. Colorado and Winnipeg have proven that bringing franchises back to cold weather areas has worked.
SLC infrastructure is not lacking. SLC supports the Jazz and they play in the Delta Center which seats 18,000 for basketball. Anyone who says that SLC doesn't have the infrastructure doesn't know what they are talking about.
It makes you wonder who has really wanted this situation to drag on this long. We know that Bettman is the front voice for the owners. It seems to me that it's the other owners who have been writing checks to keep propping up the Coyotes and, sooner or later, they're going to want their money back. I don't think it's the other owners that have wanted this situation to continue. I think it's the U.S. television execs behind the scenes.
Not sure what you mean by “proper hockey market” Miami, Tampa Bay, Nashville, Dallas, Raleigh-Durham, Greater Los Angeles are all hockey markets, and none of them are cold-weather markets Greater Phoenix is bigger than all those metro areas (except LA)… The issue is not location, it’s mismanagement of the franchise
Quebec City are ready. the arena are there, the buyer are there and the fans are there to . Revive the biggest rivality in NHL history between Montreal Canadiens vs Quebec Nordiques
@@raantaas96 ok , modern franchise. you squarehead you think you are better than us. The LHJMQ win the 5 last memorial cup. we have the betters players, the betters coach and the betters GM. sorry
No way a team in Quebec would play in the Western Conference, they're would be 17 in the East 15 in the West, some team is going to have to he forced to go west
There is currently no danger of them relocating due to Gary Bettman, he has always believed and wanted hockey to work in Arizona and has been refusing to allow the team to relocate even with people trying to buy the team and take them to other cities. Whether it be ego or whatever this has been going on for a very long time with the first effort trying to buy and move the team to Hamilton, ON. At this point with being kicked out of one arena for not paying up due to the team hemorrhaging money and having had to be owned by the league for sometime as well as no new arena anywhere on the horizon its time to admit failure and allow the team to move, this current situation cannot continue. Perhaps revisit Arizona in the future if someone builds a proper arena.
There will come a point though, where the Board of Governors will end up forcing his hand. The NHL does not have nearly the revenue stream of any of the three other sports, and rely heavily on gate receipts and parking, besides merchandise sales. They CANNOT continue to take a bath at that 4,500 seat arena, despite Bettmans hope.
@@meddyven Arizona State University may end up forcing the NHL's hand because of a lease that lasts only until the end of the 2024-25 NHL season, and no guarantee yet said uni will let the Yotes continue playing further seasons at Mullett Arena.
@@wainber1 It is laughable that you even comment with no understanding that ASU never told the Coyotes they had 3 years to play there and then have to leave. If you even paid attention whatsoever, you would know there is an option for a 4th year and additional seasons IF needed.
@@NHLCrazy2007 I dunno what's truly gone on behind closed doors but there's no doubt the Yotes are LUCKY to still be playing in Arizona after having been, at one point 2 seasons ago, LOCKED OUT of what'd then been Gila River Arena for a lack of timely payment of lease bills before said arena would, with payment of such outstanding bills, reinstate the ability of the Yotes to play there even if only for the rest of that season. Maybe the Yotes will stay in Arizona long-term but that remains far from clear.
@@wainber1 They were not locked out of the arena, only threatened with it. It was a not a good working relationship between the two parties involved and both are to blame where it ended up in a split. The Coyotes are better off in Tempe right now despite the smaller venue.
Just looked up the Glendale arena. Certainly they lose on the Coyotes dates, but they still get a pretty decent amount of events in there from WWE to boxing to arena football to concerts.
29 years left on the 30 year no movement clause suggests that they have plenty of time left. I am positive the NHL will allow the coyotes to play in the league on a backyard skating rink with zero attendance.
@@ront769 It's an issue from an NHL standpoint, but the provincial issue is an interesting point and can be tied to the P.M.! 'The deficit will take care of itself.' HA!
What about an outdoor arena for them? We could use the old Phoenix Rising stadium. The weather is mild enough to support season long outdoor hockey. It might be a little pricey to keep the ice to spec but would be a great spectacle to watch.
Utah is a great idea, and have a facility. Now the Jazz and the other teams that play at the Delta Centre, need a new building so build a new state of the art facility that all the teams can share like so many other cities. At least Utah could accept an NHL team right now because it can put a NHL ice surface in.
As a long time Panthers fan, im all for hockey in the sun belt. However, this coosb show in Arizona has gone on far too long. The NHL board of governors need to put their feet down and say enough is enough. It's time to end this
It's time. Phoenix Coyote's franchise has struggled almost as long as it's been there. It was to the point where Winnipeg Jets fans were going to wear orange to make them feel at home when they visited. (Because the Coyotes rink at the time had orange seats.)
Coyotes need to move to Oakland. Have the city pay for renovations to Oracle arena, as long as they are willing to get a Stadium deal done within 5 years.
Unfortunately you won't get the actual facts from either the owners or politicians' side. They both want to blame the other party even if "numbers" are publicized because they'll be manipulated. The biggest question is the league office: Does it feel it needs the Phoenix market? Obviously it will do it's absolute best to save Toronto, NY, Philly, Boston, Chicago. But I feel it's iffy on Phoenix.
YOU NEED TO SEND THAT CUBAN AMER. OWNER BACK TO CUBA HOW DID THEY OWE THE GLENDALE ARENA OVER 2.3 MILLION IN BACK RENT WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING, THAT'S BS
I feel bad for the fans there but this has been turning around for too long. The Yotes organization has been scrambling but it's only smoke and mirrors. We heard SLC with Ryan Smith in making things happen. I believe it. Bettman and the NHL rather have it in Houston since it's a bigger market but they were too greedy. Clearly the Houston group walked away. Under Bettman, Quebec City will never get it's chance. Quebecor group should focus all their effort into getting a PWHL franchise first, fill up the Videotron Centre, and make Bettman bite his own nails by missing the boat (Mtl vs QC in hockey).
They are an embarrassment to the league playing in a college arena!! Disgraceful!! Move them to Canada first and then get rid of WOKE Bettman!! Destroyed our game!!
I agree trying to be like football and Basketball A huge cultural mistake ,Take care of your loyal fans ,stop chasing different cultures ,basketball is wretched ,football scripted and not enough qbs Baseball bloated and thinks it's still king . IF hockey gets its stuff together could end up #1. Eliminate some teams
About time. I know there's passionate Arizona fans, but enough is enough. This just keeps getting increasingly cringy. Come up with a solution now or relocate, because this can't be sustainable.
It Utah seriously looking for an NHL team in Salt Lake, I would caution them on having anything to do with Alex Mararello! I'm not saying the Arizona Coyotes. Simply Mararello has screwed the State of Arizona, The City of Glendale AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THE FANS OF THE COYOTES. If UTAH wants a team, find an ownership to buy the Coyotes from Mararello. The City doesn't want anything to do with Mararello. I'm a resident of Glendale and the residents are now stuck paying taxes on an empty arena. Residents and Politicians are weary of anything with Mararello. FANS LOVE AND WANT THE COYOTES, THEY SIMPLY ARE THROUGH WITH MARARELLO! Truly sad for the hockey loving fans here in the Valley of the Sun.😢
I remember the Hockey Guy saying that the Coyotes have until 2029 to figure out their situation and that Gary Bettman will not consider relocating them until 2029.
It’s always sad to see a team relocate but (no disrespect to the current fans) but Phenix has never been a strong hockey town. How many kids in Phenix wake up early in the morning to go to hockey practice? How many parents flood their backyard to give their kids a private rink (or volunteer to maintain the rink in their community park)? These are things that build passionate lifelong hockey fans. This is something that Bettman has never understood. He looks at the size of people’s wallets, not the size of their hearts (once again, no disrespect to the super fans, there just aren’t enough of them).
@@fatman1288 That’s certainly true but I don’t know if that’s enough to create a loyal fan base. Many will likely only go to games when their team is in town.
Utah loves winter sports, and currently they only have the NBA and MLS. I could easily see Salt Lake City become similar to a city like Winnipeg: Small market, sellout crowds
@@andrewheitmeyer9945 They also sold out more than 330 consecutive games until Covid hit. When was the last time the Coyotes enjoyed such support? Much of Canada has been hit hard by current inflation.
This situation reminds me of the last year of the Montreal Expos, when they played half their home games in Puerto Rico, and everyone was waiting for the inevitable announcement of a relocation.
Dude, I grew up watching the Expos. We would go every other year, as we lived over 5 hours away. But still, to this day, it remains some of my fondest memories. It still hurts SO much, I don't wish this to any fan base...
My dad was the lawyer trying to get them to southern Virginia or Carolina. They were trying to get a "superstation" down here when cable was still prevalent. Oh well.
When the Suns were planning what is now the Footprint Center, they asked the hockey team at the time (the Phoenix Roadrunners of the International Hockey League) if they wanted to play in the new arena. The 'Runners declined, saying they were perfectly satisfied playing at Veterans Coliseum. So the ice rink at the new arena was set up with ice shows (like Holiday on Ice) in mind, with a stage at one end, instead of for hockey. (The Delta Center in Salt Lake has a similar setup, where the seats on one side fold up to accommodate a stage). As for an arena in Scottsdale, that was actually where the arena that was built in Glendale was SUPPOSED to be. But the Scottsdale City Council dithered on infrastructure (the then owner of the Coyotes, a real estate guy named Steve Ellman was going to build an arena on the site of a dying mall he owned called Los Arcos), and Glendale (which wanted to be known as more than a suburb ... of Sun City) swooped in and said THEY would build the same arena themselves (paying for EVERYTHING). In the bargain, they wound up getting State Farm Stadium, which was supposed to be built in Mesa -- literally across the street from the house I was living in at the time, which is now where the Cubs' spring training park is -- until voters there rejected the plans. (In Arizona, everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die. They want nice things, as long as somebody else pays for it. The word "tax" is spelled with two x's -- because the locals consider it a four-letter word.)
You forgot to mention that Jerry Colangelo asked NHL President John Ziegler in the late 1980s about the prospects of the NHL coming to Phoenix and we know the answer to that question back then. That when the final decision was made to build a basketball-only arena. Steve Ellman's decision to take the sweetheart deal offered by Glendale was the single worst decision that the Coyotes as a franchise made, second behind only the overall regionally impacted decision to this day, Colangelo's to NOT make Footprint Center multipurpose. I really do not know what the Roadrunners were thinking at the time to turn down that offer to play downtown. Ellman screwed all that up. We know that Richard Burke wanted out of the ownership group if Ellman was to take the team to Glendale and we know what resulted and the 18+ years that followed. We both know that whether or not the Coyotes would ever go back downtown would solely depend on two things... 1. If Alex Meruelo is told by Gary Bettman and the NHL Board of Governors he must sell, and... 2, If Mat Ishbia is still open to have a conversation to acquire the Coyotes and have them play at Footprint Center. It is really a shame that 27+ years later, here we are talking about what is going to happen to a team that was well received when they played at America West Arena, then everything that has happened since.
Brodie, the other key factor; SLC wants to make a pitch to host the 2034 Winter Olympics. A shiny new NHL arena would definitely entice the IOC to put the Olympics there.
But Salt Lake has been named the preferred candidate for 2034 and could be awarded the games this year alongside France getting 2030 basically in a similar fashion to what we saw with the Summer Olympics when Paris & LA were awarded their respective games back in 2017
SLC infrastructure is sloppy at best. Putting a state of the art arena in SLC would be a traffic mess with how it's currently set up and there's no way Bettman lets a team play in a 30 year old basketball arena.
@@super8bitvideos SEG has announced plans to build a new state-of-the-art hockey arena in Draper, a suburb of Salt Lake, which is why I believe he included the interim label. But even still, you are right, the infrastructure of Salt Lake is way behind what individuals are wanting to do in the area. They are hoping that more infrastructure money comes along with the olympics.
How could bettman allow an nhl team to play in a 4500 arena, what an embarrassment, move them to a major league arena, even if its houston, kc, etc, they already have arenas available
It makes you wonder how the good outweighs the bad. This team has done nothing but bleed red ink for the NHL and its television viewership within its market is among the worst in the League. Oh well, I guess if the U.S. television execs insist on keeping this turkey in the desert, the tail will continue to wag the dog.
@@michaelleroy9281 True, but there was a much larger, new arena on the horizon. Same deal with the Sharks, who played their first couple of seasons at the Cow Palace.
I feel bad for the fans, but such sketchy and cheap ownership just doesn't work for owning a major sports team these days. Weren't they evicted for not paying a tax bill to the city of about $200k? That's pocket change to an owner worth over a billion dollars LOL.
I don't think the NHL is ready to expand but all owners love money and money talks. As for the Coyotes well its been a quarter of a decade since leaving Winnipeg to the Phoenix area and they have definitely had a few issues and not much success on the ice. The Glendale Arena situation is pretty embarrassing and thats on old ownership. I was hoping last year that they would get there new building in Tempe sorted. I feel bad for the fans but personally the NHL really needs to sort this out NOW. I know Mr Bettman would not have had the patience if this was a team north of the border but it is what is. Maybe Salt Lake City could be a fresh start and I think it would be a great hockey town. Great reporting as always Brodie, just the facts.
Yeah but now the land in Vancouver is such a premium they will never get another arena built when they need one, heck the Canucks can't get a practice arena built
I really feel bad for the actual Coyotes fans. The ones who go to all the games, and really love that team. That’s going to suck for them if the team gets relocated.
Relocation of an NHL franchise that's perpetually struggled in Arizona to Utah, where they actually have a WINTER and honest-to-goodness hockey fans, would seem a "no-brainer".
Utah NO They need to go to Quebec. They have a beautiful arena they built a few years ago. The Nordiques should never have left. Fans there supported then through thick and thin. NHL keeps telling them they are getting a team
The Coyotes are still on the same arena building timeline if the Tempe arena got approved since they said it would've taken over a year (closer to 2yrs) to clean up the landfill the arena would be on. Any new arena will be on ground ready to go, so still in the originally thought opening date. The current rumor is in North Phoenix about a mile or 2 from Scottsdale. I used to live near that area and it would be a great for an arena.
Correct. And now that there has been confirmation an application was put in for a bid to purchase the Arizona State Trust land in northeast Phoenix, this is an important step in that direction. Only a matter of winning the bid. Then we will see if that is indeed the site.
Brodie, you are always so thorough, and logical regarding these situstions. However, the Coyotes have had numerous opportunities to put forth a viable plan, and it's been a bust. I've never heard a peep about Scottsdale ( have they even looked seriously into it?). The Utah situation will continue to escalate, with Ryan Smith and the Miller group, having the money behind them to pull this off in an instant. It is sad, as no one wants relocation, but the Desert dogs have exhausted their time in the hourglass.
Scottdale was supposed to be where the Desert Diamond Arena was supposed to be. The City Council dithered on how much public money the city would provide for infrastructure, and Glendale swooped in to pay for everything. (To their regret. Although it did get them the Cardinals stadium later, which tourists are paying for with hotel and car rental taxes.)
The original move out of downtown Phoenix was supposed to be Los Arcos Arena located at Scottsdale Blvd and McDowell. It was put to a vote and passed. Twice. That was until the Goldwater Institute ( a right-wing, anti-tax, anti-union, anti-government litigious think tank) filed suit to stop it. At that point, Richard Burke, the Coyotes owner at the time, threw in the towel and sold the team.
Back after the 1924-25 season the league moved our Hamilton Tigers to New York City. They wanted Hamilton to build a bigger arena because our 4500 seat arena was too small. We finally got it done in 1985, our 19000 seat arena has sat empty because of Toronto saying that we're an infringement on their territory. Stopping any expansion or attempts to relocate a team there. So Arizona, basically hold on tight because once they leave, you could still be screwed 100 years later.
SLC would not be the worst place for the Coyotes to land, especially if they have the friendliest possible landlord (the team owner). However, I'd buy stock in local beverage distribution networks, because alcohol consumption will probably double. For the entire city. 🤣
Thank you for covering this issue Brodie. As someone who supports the Coyotes I’m so used to nothing but speculation and slander. I know you’ll give fair coverage as you have sympathy for teams at risk of relocation
If a BILLIONAIRE team owner wants a new house for his team then that BILLIONAIRE should fund it. If the BILLIONAIRE takes taxpayer money to fund his new BILLIONAIRE arena then the taxpayers should not have to pay to watch a game in the arena that they funded for BILLIONAIRES.
Bettman is dug in so deep with the coyotes i dont think his ego will ever allow the team to be moved, Bettman will continue to drag this out no matter the cost to the league. Only way it happens is if the owners stand up to Bettman and say enough is enough but Bettman has beainwashed them so bad with how delusionally he overvalues the phoenix market for the NHL. Hell he wants to give Atlanta another shot and leave Quebec out again.
Listen to you talk about the owners "standing up to Bettman" because it is only in YOURS and the other haters' interest to see the Coyotes leave... which will not happen. Furthermore, Gary Bettman is a lot smarter than some 49ers fan when it comes to sports business.
@@NHLCrazy2007 your a damn fool first off me being a niners fan has nothing to do with this topic. I guarantee if they could go back they would have just let the coyotes go back to Winnipeg. Now they are so far dug in they are going to look really bad should they pull the plug. Or they can continue to wait and pray for a miracle that likely will never happen and keep losing millions and look even more pathetic.
Utah's governor and legislative leaders met with the head of the NHL just this afternoon. The Legislature also passed a resolution encouraging NHL in Utah.
I believe that the NHL should maintain its current number of 32 teams. As someone who has lived in Arizona for more than 20 years, I played hockey at Oceanside Ice Arena, which was demolished but located across from where Oceanside used to be sits a large plot of land belonging to the Salt River Indian Tribe. Unfortunately, the tribe would only allow an arena to be built and not the entertainment district they desire.
As a long term Valley resident...this would be heartbreaking. First, the barn in Glendale was fantastic for hockey! Was a straight up config as opposed to those 60s/70s bowl shaped arenas. Every seat, even in the bleeds, was a great seat! Having the Yotes here has been great for hockey and the NHL. We did produce a Matthews and Coots as well...lol. if the team wins, the fans how up. Bettman... Just horrible for the NHL. He's destroying the game for the almighty $$$$ and his handling of the Yotes in another example. The fact that they are playing at ASU...Ontario senior whale sh!t barns are as big for christ sake! It's embarrassing. If it weren't for Toronto and their dominance over the league, the Yotes would have moved to Hamilton years ago!
Having the Coyotes in Arizona to grow the game, yes. But we disagree on Gary Bettman's role as if it was not for him, the Coyotes would be gone. I get it, Desert Diamond Arena is a great venue to see hockey games and I have gone to my share of them to know that. But the problem is, it was built in the wrong location and I know that you do not like to hear that. The Coyotes lost MORE money playing there. And many people knew that fact. You can side with the haters and naysayers with your complaints that the Coyotes play at Mullett Arena all you want (and I have gone there, too), but in the end, the Coyotes are going to be located somewhere in the Valley that is going to get them back on track in every way. Glendale was not a good partner for the Coyotes either and the team is better off without them. Let that arena's future take its course because if the West Valley is not going make it viable enough with no main professional sports tenant (the Arizona Rattlers are not a big league team), good luck. And another thing, they were not going to move to Hamilton after that sleaze bag Jerry Moyes tried to circumvent league rules and sell the team "under the table" to Jim Balsillie. It would have undermined the integrity of the CBA as we know it.
Salt Lake City once played host to the Winter Olympics, so it's not inconceivable they could host an NHL team. They also have more than a million residents which makes them larger than some current MLB cities. Stranger things have happened.
That is a vital point that fans of NHL teams in the sun belt, so often, conveniently ignore. The only thing about Salt Lake City is that it is a modest-sized market that is also an NBA market, which is something the NHL has consciously tried to steer clear of (i.e. Raleigh, Nashville, Columbus, Las Vegas, Seattle).
The issue is the amount of sports teams in the area and when the dollars would be spent. If hockey happened at a different time of year compared to the Jazz I would fully be on board here. But if you are competing dollar wise with both of the leagues and also college sports you are just going to be the last option. And that isn't a good starting base with the population of SLC given the dimensions of the Metro area. People are not going to travel 30-40 miles to go to a hockey game during the winter like they would for the Jazz in down years. If the metro was more round instead of running north and south for 50 miles it would make more sense.
Relocation doesn't come with a billion dollar price tag for the owners like expansion would. Expansion may not be the immediate plan, but relocating any team is only an extreme option. Unless criminal acts are involved, an organizations actions harm the whole of the league, or a stadium sits at 25% attendance for at least 4 years, I wouldn't expect a relocation.
The Utah announcement was a false flag. They aren’t looking for an expansion team, they are declaring their desire and immediate availability for a relocation.
In all fairness Utah sucks for hockey Utah has less hockey players registered than Alaska Meanwhile Milwaukee, Portland and Quebec City all exist... SLC would be the second smallest US market in the NHL...what a stupid idea. Still better than Phoenix though
It's not ideal, but they'd only need it for 2 seasons while the hockey only arena is built. Other than the ends, by the goals, the rest of the Delta Center is capable enough.
If the Coyotes do relocate, it also has somewhat of a knock on effect on the future of soccer in the Phoenix area mainly because MLS would instantly want to add a team to fill the void created by the loss of the Coyotes much like what happened in Seattle when the Sounders joined MLS shortly after the Sonics of the NBA relocated to OKC. However there is already a team in Phoenix called the Rising who play in the USL (the league below MLS in the US soccer pyramid) who draw large crowds to their matches & are the defending champions of that league. If the Coyotes relocate, I could see MLS announce a few days after that they are expanding to Phoenix which then creates the same situation that happened in San Diego last year where the impending arrival of an MLS team basically forced the USL team to fold.
@@ipsbz Has Glendale declared bankruptcy yet? It was their city council which threw good money after bad to keep the team in Arizona, and to keep losing more money, rather than let poetic justice take its course.
Likely wouldn't have seen a new arena to keep the Jets the 1st time. Needed time for economy to improve and opinions to change. Merge current AZ franchise history with Wpg Jets (gets that history back together). Offer a new franchise to SLC. Gets the expansion fees they would prefer over sale price. Current AZ players go to SLC. No imbalance in league structure.
@@greg_fair That's almost an understatement. Barry Shenkarow, the original Jets' owner, was offered employment by other teams after he had sold the franchise. Because of the uncontrolled escalation of players' salaries at the time, he knew the NHL was headed for trouble. He declined every offer made to him and went on the record very bluntly, 'I can't help them.'. The NHL had been undergoing such rapid change in lieu of the game being taken control of by Bettman and his entourage, and sold to corporate America, nearly all teams immediately required new facilities. The economics of the League had simply become incompatible with too many teams because it had no cost stability.
I like the coyotes team. Really got into some of the hype about some of the new recruits....even though said new guys have not really done much. That said, the NHL should just move the team. Arizona has not been a good place for pro hockey.

Imagine how the coyotes would do if they had a real home. The owners have no interest in spending their own money nor do they have that type to spend. the shared revenue by the league for the coyotes is substantial and remaining a small market team is more profitable. The league should revoke the franchise and obtain owners that are will to spend and perhaps re locate. Houston remains a potential city and a marketing dream for the NHL. Imagine on national tv. “ The battle of Texas “. Time to move on
How about this let the coyotes play out of Utah well they build a permanent arenas in Arizona and a permanent arena in SALT lake and when both arenas are finished then give Utah an expansion franchise.
I’m surprised the NHL hasn’t forced the sale of the Coyotes regardless of where they end up. It seems like ownership is the problem when it comes to not paying bills. It should be forced to sell the team to either someone in Arizona or to Ryan Smith.
@@NHLCrazy2007 the minute the team got kicked out of Glendale for not paying its bills the NHL should have forced a sale. Bad financial management by the franchise.

I really think they need to just get on with it in a new city there is way too many cities coming out and expressing interest in the NHL i have a friend that’s been a coyotes STH for years and she says that it’s so unfair because they know they most likely aren’t keeping the cuyotes but it’s like dangling a toy in front of a kid and yanking it away it’s just time to get it over with it’s terrible for the fans that are actual hockey fans
FYI. The ECHL Utah Grizzlies used to play in the Delta Center back when it was first built for a number of years so the Delta Center has the ice and can support ice hockey. The only problem with the Delta Center is that it was optimized for basketball, not hockey and as a result, there are many obstructed view seats in the upper ring for ice hockey. A better solution would be the Maverick Center in West Valley. It was built specifically for ice hockey and seats about 10,000. The ECHL Utah Grizzlies play there so although there is more seating in the Delta Center, the Maverick center is a better place for ice hockey.
@@a.fredscullard162 Maybe. The IOC has already said that SLC is the preferred host for the 2034 Olympic games so either the IOC is assuming that SLC will build a new arena or that they are making that evaluation on the facilities that SLC currently has.
Well, that's why the Grizzlies are at the Maverik Center. Hopefully a new downtown multipurpose arena is built to house the Jazz and an NHL expansion team. I think the NHL would be a better option than Major League Baseball.
We know the Coyotes are Gary's baby, many sports pundits in both Canada and America feel that this is it, there won't be anymore extensions given. They want the franchise to be in a city where they can prosper like they should and play in a major league arena, not an arena for college hockey.

Expansion isn't happening again like it did with Seattle and Vegas. Those expansion drafts were freaking gifts to those teams and 32 is a good number. 16 in each conference. It doesn't dilute the talent pool. There are NOT 32 quality starting goaltenders as it is. And in the NHL you got to have a backup that's capable to play 20-ish games. So no more expansion for a while. The fact is the Coyotes will need to move. Phoenix isn't working Gary. Deal with it. Let them move to whatever market wants to have them.
Arizona CAN work, the Coyotes just needs the right ownership and needs to build a new forever home for the team. Their entire existence has been struggling to find a winning culture and Arizona has a nice fanbase but the team was lacking leadership and direction. I prefer the Coyotes to stay in Arizona despite what the naysayers say.
@@kingmo8789 The nice fanbase who stopped going to Phoenix after the novelty wore off, or bitched about driving to Glendale, or doesn't fill Mullett Arena? That fanbase?
Gary cares FIRST about the media market. Phoenix to SLC is a big drop. BUT a way better hockey market. You don't need to have a team be the anchor for a real estate development proposal. Just an arena and play.
What proof do you have that Salt Lake City is a "way better" hockey market. If it is, they would have gotten a team long ago. And clearly you don't know today's business of sports and how developments impact sports franchises.
We know the Coyotes will never relocate under Bettman. He wants them in the Phoenix area. They need to find an ownership group with deep enough pockets to privately fund a new arena in order to work that all out.
Matt Ishbia might be what the coyotes need in order to stay in Phoenix and they can always turn footprint center with renovations to the lower bowl to fix the sightlines for hockey.
@@Itshadow306 it is certainly possible given the fact that the Footprint Center was the home of the Coyotes from 1996 (when they relocated from Winnipeg) to 2003.
This is total fake news. Oakland can't keep its teams because their leadership couldn't get their act together. Please stop acting like Oakland did its best. This is not true. Oakland had a decade to get its stadium deal in place. The City failed its residents. Last minute deals is like cramming for that final when you haven't done the work all semester. Sometimes it works out but most times it leads to a bad result.
Reality bites.. but even living here in the valley, I've not heard anything about the Yotes new home. About the only vibe I get... Scottsdale is not overly enthused about the idea. Phoenix has been fighting with the Yotes for years... Tempe.. Well, the people have spoken there.. Glendale has already given them the boot. Peoria and surprise (among others in that side/area) are just too far out of the way (a complaint with their Glendale home.)... I've been afraid for a while that it's going to end when the Yotes are NOT in arizona...
Between the Bruins and the Rangers, returning to Hartford is not a priority for the NHL. It's unfortunate because I always enjoyed watching my Habs break the hearts of Whalers fans in the playoffs.
Brodie, the 'Yotes simply do not have the fan base nor the support from Arizona from the get-go. If they are playing in a college arena and not selling out every game, (let alone playing in a college venue with what appears to have a minor league fan base regarding capacity) it's time to make "wayfaring moves" to get out of the desert. That arena that you indicated was outvoted by the people in the state. What does this tell you? If Salt Lake or Utah says we can provide you with "immediate shelter" then so be it, and the fears you have regarding "how many teams" won't have an immediate impact. The bottom line is some markets can support a minor-league hockey franchise. And the proof is in the pudding, as the "Desert Doggies" simply cannot catch major league attraction. Period.
They need to be called the Utah FrontRunners, because the regional rail system is SLC is the FrontRunner. The goal horn should be one of the train horns. Not sure they will get the new arena but they will get a team.
I like Rivalries. We could build a fantastic one with the Golden Knights of Sin City - If We Make team called the Knightmares in Utah's Family Friendly atmosphere. Culture Clash would be a factor. Utah fans could go dressed to the games in Knightmare attire similar (and mocking?) Vegas Football Fans that dress up for the "Black Hole". Goal Song would be "For Whom The Bell Tolls". Utes Fans Love the Annual Black Out Game.. Mormons have a Dark and Wild Side when it comes to sports.
Salt Lake would be way more successful than Arizona, which was totally dumb and even more stupid the way Bettman has natured this failed venture for more than the last 26 years....

I’d be sad for him and my cousin if they relocate , it’s been a tradition that when every time me and my grandmother visit we watch the Coyotes. I hope and pray for a solution soon
They will be staying. Lots of behind-the-scenes work is currently being done to keep the team in Arizona.
Nationwide problem? Just how many teams outside of the NFL have been moved since the turn of the century? I'll wait.
-Atlanta. For some reason the NHL cannot move on from Atlanta
-KC,CLE,Hartford. These are also cities that had NHL franchises at one point and are way better fits location and weather wise to host another team. Colorado and Winnipeg have proven that bringing franchises back to cold weather areas has worked.
Re: Your last point. Don't forget the Minnesota Wild!
SLC infrastructure is not lacking. SLC supports the Jazz and they play in the Delta Center which seats 18,000 for basketball. Anyone who says that SLC doesn't have the infrastructure doesn't know what they are talking about.
The Coyotes are not moving, so your focus should be on if the Jazz and the NHL expansion team will share a new arena.

Unfortunately you won't get the actual facts from either the owners or politicians' side. They both want to blame the other party even if "numbers" are publicized because they'll be manipulated.
They want nice things, as long as somebody else pays for it. thanks for the local insights!

Yes, because it is tribal land, the Coyotes cannot own it, cannot build residential components and cannot have a sportsbook on the property.
Quebec City!
If the metro was more round instead of running north and south for 50 miles it would make more sense.
lol what cities have under a million population? Milwaukee has one and a half million.
@@jasonaltig985 Yes, and Milwaukee is also the smallest market with a MLB franchise.
This is why I don't believe SLC should pursue the A's.
Slc is such a better sports town, everyone in Phoenix is from somewhere else and already of fan of teams where they’re from
When the Coyotes filed a 2.3 billion dollar lawsuit against PHX, you knew the clock was ticking.
Portland, OR would be a good place to move. Moda Center could be converted into a hockey arena.
If they haven't relocated the Coyotes by now they never will.
And they will not.
The Arizona team has been in immediate danger of relocation ever since it was formed.
The Utah announcement was a false flag. They aren’t looking for an expansion team, they are declaring their desire and immediate availability for a relocation.
That is false. That narrative needs to stop RIGHT NOW.
In all fairness Delta center sucks for hockey
@@sominboy2757would only be for a couple of years
In all fairness Utah sucks for hockey
Utah has less hockey players registered than Alaska
Meanwhile Milwaukee, Portland and Quebec City all exist...
SLC would be the second smallest US market in the NHL...what a stupid idea. Still better than Phoenix though
It's not ideal, but they'd only need it for 2 seasons while the hockey only arena is built. Other than the ends, by the goals, the rest of the Delta Center is capable enough.
Getting this franchise out of AZ is 2 decades overdue.
Bettmans NHL
@@mikeleo5990 Yeah, with its geography turned completely upside down.
@MisterCaution Paid hockey normally is, save for the usual Heritage games.
They should’ve moved years ago like 20
News flash: Hockey doesn't survive where people prefer to watch NASCAR and WWE. @MisterCaution
an NHL team that leads to an NHL level arena is a huge want in Utah for preparation for the 2034 winter Olympics.
Phoenix should’ve had an MLS team years ago
Atlanta has a MLS team and it has been succeeding the Seattle Sounders in attendance. MLS can work in Arizona.
The coyotes could be the a’s future. If they stayed in Winnipeg, they’d be fine lol.
Yup. If Bettman didn't have such a hard on to have the Jets leave winnipeg things could have worked out. I wonder what winnipeg girl dumped bettman.
I laughed so hard at when Winnipeg ALMOST got the Coyotes back in 2011. Atlanta was good but Arizona relocating back would have been ultimate Karma!
Oakland has an arena that with a little rework could be NHL ready in no time. Give the Sharks a regional rivalry. BRING BACK THE OAKLAND SEALS!
They should move to Houston.
hockey in arizonia wont work. It hasnt. owner after owner takes a shot on em cuz u can get a team ont he cheap. However when u lose 10s of millions yearly... It evens up. Its time to give Canada one more team. We care about hockey. Bring the whalers back
I don't think it is going to happen
Imagine how the coyotes would do if they had a real home. The owners have no interest in spending their own money nor do they have that type to spend.
the shared revenue by the league for the coyotes is substantial and remaining a small market team is more profitable.
The league should revoke the franchise and obtain owners that are will to spend and perhaps re locate. Houston remains a potential city and a marketing dream for the NHL. Imagine on national tv. “ The battle of Texas “. Time to move on
The fans had control. They did not show up
Same thing in Atlanta; but you know how it is. It's always the owners' fault.
How about this let the coyotes play out of Utah well they build a permanent arenas in Arizona and a permanent arena in SALT lake and when both arenas are finished then give Utah an expansion franchise.
Send them to Quebec City
The relocation that is long overdue is the relocation of Gary Bettman to the unemployment line. The NHL is a pathetic joke.
I’m surprised the NHL hasn’t forced the sale of the Coyotes regardless of where they end up. It seems like ownership is the problem when it comes to not paying bills. It should be forced to sell the team to either someone in Arizona or to Ryan Smith.
Yes, local buyers first.
@@NHLCrazy2007 the minute the team got kicked out of Glendale for not paying its bills the NHL should have forced a sale. Bad financial management by the franchise.
@@ryanthomas887 You are completely wrong about the Coyotes being "evicted". What part of "not wanting to sign a long term extension" do you not understand? Clearly you do not want to comprehend an actual fact that the national media idiots deliberately ignore. But you will just buy into their narrative just like a lot of the dopes on here do.
Agree. And the Grizzlies could move up and become the NHL team's AHL affiliate.
Seems like it's a green light from the State of Utah & getting a new arena in SLC would certainly help in getting the 2034 Winter Olympic Games?
Ah yes, you are an insider and really knows what is happening. Not.

MOVE THAT TEAM!! It's a nowhere place to play hockey.
It's time to let the Coyotes go. They've had way too many chances.
I would hope for no more expansion in the NHL. 32 teams is more than enough.

JESUS CHRIST GARY BETTMAN JUST GIVE QUEBEC CITY THEIR TEAM BACK ALREADY
Gary cares FIRST about the media market. Phoenix to SLC is a big drop. BUT a way better hockey market. You don't need to have a team be the anchor for a real estate development proposal. Just an arena and play.
What proof do you have that Salt Lake City is a "way better" hockey market. If it is, they would have gotten a team long ago. And clearly you don't know today's business of sports and how developments impact sports franchises.
salt lake will be a exspansion team.....billion dollar franchise fee
the coyotes are just a big middle finger to Quebec lol with seatle haha 2 useless teams
Move them to Quebec City already
Then who is the team that will have to move to the Western Conference in the Coyotes move to Quebec? won't be the Red Wings
Stop the madness….Houston or give Quebec their team!
We know the Coyotes will never relocate under Bettman. He wants them in the Phoenix area. They need to find an ownership group with deep enough pockets to privately fund a new arena in order to work that all out.
We need to get rid of Bettman. He is the issue.
I would say the Kimel Brothers are primed to own the Coyotes with the Ishbia brothers if they want.
@@wittynclever PREACH!
Maybe its because all that gang activity has also finally left Oakland....bankrupt.
You stated so many false statements, it is not even worth correcting it.
They should move to Hartford and bring back the Whalers
No chance. The state of Connecticut does even put in more than $100 million just for any minimal work on XL Center. So nope.
Between the Bruins and the Rangers, returning to Hartford is not a priority for the NHL. It's unfortunate because I always enjoyed watching my Habs break the hearts of Whalers fans in the playoffs.
There is no way in hell the NHL is going to return to a market it's been away from since 1997
Brodie, the 'Yotes simply do not have the fan base nor the support from Arizona from the get-go. Period.
'We don't have a fan base here. Hockey is not made for the desert.' - Jerry Moyes to Glendale City Council, 2009
Well, just ask former Coyotes' owner, Jerry Moyes. He couldn't unload that team fast enough.
