Panhandling: What's going on behind the sign?

- You've likely seen panhandlers on city street corners and highway exit ramps. They're usually holding signs and seeking just a few dollars.
13 Investigates is taking a closer look at Pittsfield, Massachusetts. It's a small city in the Berkshires, with a busy downtown. Residents there say they've noticed more panhandlers popping up in recent years -- many on East Street. Who are these people, and why is COVID-19 making it a bigger issue?

Panhandling is a scam, peoe need to ignore them and keep driving,
Whats wrong with this guys parents that he lives at home and panhandles and they're good with it
The guy thats living with his parents, gyow up and get a job, your parents will understsnd if you help with utilities while saving up money
I've panhandle when I needed it and no other choice, know some guys who do it all day everyday making over a thousand sometimes 1.7k a week and just gamble it away. Don't be fooled about how much they say they make I've seen a guy make 500$ in less than a half hour.
I agree. I've made $300 in 4 hours myself. But usually $100 in 4 hours. But depends where your location and how you do it
@seagullseagullseagulit's true.
Some places are bad though. You could go out for 8 hours and only make $20
Or they drink and use drugs with the money
My wife had a friend who lived in Cambridge,MA and was blind....he eventually wound up in a wheel-chair and she became his care-giver.
His other other care-giver was stealing his money and my wife got mad enough she fired them all and took over along with her sister.
He couldn't work so my wife would get him dressed and wheel him down the 2 blocks and he would sit outside the local bodega and panhandle, while my wife cleaned his apartment and cooked him meals (then he could just microwave them). He would only be out there for about 2-3 hours during lunch panhandling. He would sometimes come home with $80-$100...sometimes more (most I ever seen him make in 3 hours was about $200) That was how he had money for recreational things. (his apartment and bills were taken care of by a (crappy) case-manager.)
Alot of the people in the neighborhood loved the old guy and were warm in their greeting to him. RIP Al. N. Miss ya Pal.
I used to give money to panhandlers until one day I was taken for a ride and saw the person outside of a nightclub when i had specifically told her to buy a hot cup of coffee. Now if someone comes up to me asking for money because he/she is hungry i will take that person to a fast food restaurant and order him/her something even if the kind deed pisses the person off, in the end i am being taken for a ride. Otherwise i will give to homeless charities such as Salvation Army or Catholic Charities
Lol. The starvation army and all those charities are never going to end homelessness or panhandling.
Why would they end their career?
And to think food is the only help a person in need needs is nice, but thoughtless.
Everyone's a capitalist until it comes to homelessness...
Then socialism is the only answer
I never give money to panhandlers. People who do are just enabling them and making the problem worse.
@seagullseagullseagul When you give panhandlers money and expect them not to spend it on drugs, see how that works
I’m homelsss an not on drugs tho
@@pepsico815companies shouldn't give out money for paychecks...
They will only use it for drugs.
We should just live in an efficient socialist society. Great idea
@seagullseagullseagul they are all red, white and blue capitalist that will tell you that capitalism is freedom and always the only answer...
Being up homelessness and panhandling and all of a sudden socialism is the best and only answer. Stay strong.
I know what you're going through.
They don't. And they don't care to know

You don't know what they use the money for!
I’m just glad it’s not me out there doing it. It could happen to anyone. I carry Protien bars as well to give out.
Always remember to carry at least a few coins with you, wherever you may go, so that, if you do happen to come across a beggar, you will be able to exercise the virtue of Charity...
❤
your money will go to drugs. because that’s what their money did
They never mention these fake hypocrites in churches who make 2 million of donations an government funding as a homeless myself I have no housing but I have acesss to free clothes from churches an horrible free food but I can’t get free housing isn’t that ironic free housing for the homeless is hard to get but you have clothes an food for free with the churches making 2million in tax returns
I’m homeless an no a drug addict why are you doing that to all homeless
Companies should only provide housing and food because employees just spend their money and drugs.
Drugs alcohol cigarettes or lottery tickets some others do buy meals are legit
You should start your own Communist country and control everything and it will be a great society then.
Workers don't buy drugs. Right
I don’t give any money.
LATELYKNIZI, I USUALLY TELL THEM TO GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE AND I CALL POLICE! OUR POLICE TAKE ACTION WHERE I LIVE!
@@claudedalton8970I’m not on drugs an I panhandle I use it for food for the week an to pay my phone bill an to help me get around to find ways to get out the situation why are you telling me that I’m a drug addict all of us aren’t
@@claudedalton8970and you give them no reason to stop.
The only reason a person stops panhandling is when a community years then with respect and they feel they want to be a part of a purposeful part.
Tell me what town you live in so I can get a day lawsuit.
I'm deaf and homeless therefore that makes me ineligible for any government assistance so i have to panhandle or i don't eat
Quit.puting.down.homeless.people.lieing
The government needs to quit focusing on these illegal immigrants so much and start trying to help these homeless people a lot more.
There are many places that you can make donations to that help get items into the hands of those in need. Or if they are hungry and you're able to get them some food great, but I never hand over cash. Ever.
To sorry to work
Thankfull that I never panhandled. Not saying that it would never happen. I would do all i could to keep from doing it.
Financial traveling lol
