“This game sucks, I’ll make my own” badass.
Shinji Mikami is based.
@about you I know you hate religious people
He's already stated that God Hand was a product of his own whim. Mikami set his mind into making a game that he had fun playing and took zero criticism from anyone and everyone. Mad respect.
@@THWhite-ip3uq , Atheists are ironically the worst religious zealots of the lot, despite their claims otherwise on the matter.
Thank the god hand his game failed then! That's what this kind of attitude deserves. Really restores my faith in this world after Sonic Mania was somehow successful and commercially well received.
Remember kids, if you say your piece of art is a better version of another piece of art, you deserve to fail as hard as possible because you are a condescending liar, as art is entirely subjective and one game cannot ever be better than another, that's a lie spread by pseudointellectuals for as long as art exists.
Final Fight's worst game inspired the most underrated ps2 game ever? That's actually pretty funny and kind of awesome.
@Exodus N Not enough, God Hand is frigging amazing.
There's a lot of underrated games on that system, you would be surprised. Hell, there are a lot of underrated unknown mediocore to good games on that system.
@@lizardguyNA God Hand is a love letter to my heart. Every day I wake up scorned that it flopped so hard. At least it inadvertently set Clover down the path to become Platinum Games.
@Biluga420 You’re not Alexander.
@Biluga420 Hello IGN.
The PS2 was the best selling console ever, because it was also the cheapest DVD player lol. So many parents got their kids a gaming system as a "present", because really they wanted to watch DVDs
It's not the only reason, though. But that certainly helped. What also helped was backwards compatibility and the fact that in the previous generation the PSX had large amounts of success.
@@RippahRooJizah Don't forget that most people only had a PS1 on last console generation so naturally they wanted the next Playstation as well rather than a lunch box or a console by a newcomer like Microsoft.
It wasn’t just that. The largest contributing factor to the ps2s success was hype. Sony lied about the power of the unit for a solid year leading up to the launch saying things like that it could render Toystory in real time, and that it was being stolen by terrorist to power guided missles. (I am not making this up). They said that it was so powerful that the architecture required expert programmers to utilize. So for well over a year, people gave any bad pa2 game a pass because everyone was convinced that they just weren’t smart enough to harness the true power of the ps2.
This, plus the social phenomena of not being able to get one at launch, propelled the unit into mythical status despite it having one of the worst launches in games history (look it up) and not having any decent games for a year. (Aside from SSX and a couple others.)
It’s undeniable that ps2 was a champion console, but luck and shady practices got them a position they didn’t entirely earn. And that same shady strategy is what caught up with them I’m the PS3 era.
@@JazGalaxy And your proof?
Also the architecture thing was pretty much true, although part of that was Sony's lack of support. Still, that wasn't a lie.
@@JazGalaxy "I am not making this up" No. You are just regurgitating stuff that _others_ have made up. That story was already being told about the Dreamcast, long before the PS2 was even released.
The sheer levels of arrogance and condensing tone in Trip's email is honestly revolting
It's poetic the fact this guy is the founder of E.A

That DVD player in the PS2 was a huge selling point. At the time I bought mine, the PS2 was about $50 more than a DVD player and played games.
"The see way some adults would reject Shrek or Beethoven"
The audacity of this guy. Who does he think he is putting him self of the same level as humanity's greatest achievement I'm art. He's not even in the same swamp as Shrek.
Seems about right to me. Shrek is garbage.
I didn't undersrand what he meant, Shrek is obviously an animated movie and the greatest piece of art to ever exist, But when he mentioned Beethoven, Was he talking about the dog or the composer?
That whole email is golden. Just so many layers to unpeel

Rockstar: "Oh no, anyway"
If I made a video game, and people made comments about my work, I would do everything that I could to destroy everything and anything that the Karens and Kevins valued, held sacred, held dear, idolized, and worshiped in their lives, plus I would expose their real agendas in front of the entire world, thus destroying the opposition in one fell swoop, as any critic that saw what had happened to a critic that was made into not just a good example, but also a horrible warning, on what would happen if they started talking smack about my work would learn to grow some brain cells inside of their heads and to abandon the drugs and alcohol that they used in their lives.
Their publicist does this on purpose, they created alot of the outrage for GTA3 as marketing. Likely they did the same for SA also

Oh God. Why are the subtitles and actual voiceover always so different in these videos? It's amateurish.
Wow, Trip Hawkins was ahead of his time by comparing Shrek to Beethoven.
I think he means the dog movie. Not the composer
@@InternetLad I'm pretty sure that more people know about the composer than the dog movie, even in the mid-2000's
Must have been some hostility, and passive aggressiveness during that development of the Beach Bandits game.
Not necessarily. Sometimes a part of your program is breaking, you have absolutely no idea why, and no amount of study, deepdives, printf statements, breakpoints, or Googling gets you anywhere - If it hadn't just made you even more confused. I've written way worse stuff in code comments.

Ps2 really was the Golden Age of gaming.
GTA3, then Vice City, then San Andreas... Each of those games alone could sell a console, and they all existed on a single system.
More like, the Golden age of console gaming.

A friend found out that the first generation of PS2s supported actual hard drives (which where necessary for a couple of games, like FF 12), so if you get one, you can get ISOs installed into it
Oh I'm sorry, I didn't know that Final Fight: Streetwise was the forth game that hit 3d- IT WAS THE FIFTH FINAL FIGHT GAME BY RELEASE DATE AND THE SECOND GAME TO BE IN 3D!!!
Honestly, I was always a GameCube guy, but I have to agree the PS2 was great as well.
Same.
I love my Gamecube, but I have to admit that it was pretty lacking in horror titles (especially compared to the PS2, though probably not a fair comparison).

Who cares what these media outlets have to say, San Andreas is an iconic masterpiece of a game
Is one of childhood games. I just wish Take2 would stop sending DMCA request over mods that helps the game still being playable on PC.
The Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas articles were too quick to jump to conclusions. A good chunk of San Andreas's narrative is depicting loyal and persistent gang members in Los Angeles as heroic and it actually paints the police and those who side with the police as the villains! During the third act when the in-game equivalent of the Rodney King riots happen, the story goes to great lengths to show the player how understandable the riots are considering all the disgusting and abhorrent shit Tenpenny did and got away with,. By the end, Smoke and Ryder who sided with Tenpenny die with him while CJ, Sweet, Kendyll, and company live to start a new future for Grove Street.
Well yeah, but that's how the game (and mainstream) media gets their money, especially now. Jumping to conclusions and stoking flames of dissent.
And it has been the same since every gta game after. GTA IV shows how the American dream isn't as great as it seems and GTA V shows the shadiness of Hollywood like places
@@infernoROBO And the police, government, or hell, capitalism in general. Not every poor person or victim of society in GTA is a saint, obviously, but those who have little to no power in America are cast in a far better light than those with jurisdiction over others in Rockstar games.
Nicely written🤝
@Hiden Bunter's Krak Pype Don't you have a court case to show up to right now? I heard judges don't take attempted insurrection as a little oopsy woopsy.
Being concerned about a game series known for its depiction of crime (admittedly, nonserious depiction, usually making fun of it in a very hyperbolic way) having a black protagonist and potentially furthering black criminal stereotypes isn't actually that bad. While it's not great that they hadn't actually played it, it's a reasonable concern and, if we are to treat games as art, they should be criticized like art. Apparently it was a good depiction (I haven't played GTA myself) but it's understandable criticism and saying that a piece of media can increase a real stereotype is not a bad critique.
Exactly
When you pointed out that he also founded EA it clicked. It made so much sense.
He did a lot for the gaming industry, I understand the EA hate and 2011 9GAG level of gamer "EA Bad" humor.
But he actually made a lot of things right and believed that games are art and devs are artists, Even if the email he sent was pretty childish.
@@ka7al958 EA is still doing scummy practices today, dude. "EA Bad" humor is still relevant...
as german, i really don't miss the ps2 days. last gen where it was *always a pain in the ass* to get the uncensored version of certain games like gta - games stores tried to sell the censored garbage and without the internet access like nowadays... have fun getting one of the playable import versions :(
Honestly i think that San Andreas having a black main cast is something to be proud of. You hear about representation alot nowadays and one of the most iconic games of all time and considered by many as the best game of that generation has a black main character centered around the hood nonetheless. Not Master Chief, Mario or Solid Snake but a black dude named CJ from grove street..Dope.
Representation has a negative connotation at this point because it just seems that any dev who does it is catering to SJW-like propaganda by media sources. San Andreas was one of those rare instances though where the representation was done right and it can clearly be seen, unlike some other game like *cough* TLOU II *cough*
@@infernoROBO way back in 2004 too.
@@dcta51 Certain anime too, like Cowboy Bebop and another one I forgot(starred a badass black woman looking after a kid). Seems "Representation" can only be done right if you're not just another sheltered white creative just trying to appease their corporate overlords.
White people flipped the F out when CJ was a. Ounces. They said they couldn’t identify with a black man as the lead character and said rockstar ruined the game. It was a huge thing.
@@infernoROBO Here's the thing: when they decided to make GTA SA's main character a black man it was because it was organic to the story. They didn't set out to make a game with a black man as a character, it was a natural progression for the story they wanted to tell. Nowadays, "representation" comes before and sometimes even in place of storytelling, which is why people are so annoyed by it.

I'm so glad I own the game.
@matt alan Don't know why you would be glad to have not played a great game.
IM ENGAGING WITH THE VIDEO GREG YOU'RE WELCOME
I remember when Trip Walker's letter dropped online. It was a huge deal.
It's almost October, you know... and I was a little disappointed that no horror games came up in this video since the PS2 was an absolute golden age for horror and survival horror titles. If you were to make a video on those, like Silent Hill 2-4, Fatal Frame 1-3, Kuon, LifeLine, Siren 1 and 2, Rule of Rose, Haunting Ground, and so many more, I would subscribe on the spot.
Man, the PS2 years gave me some of my best gaming memories. Back then when I had my first job the first thing I wanted to purchase was a new console. The only console I had before was a bootleg Famicom and then after I only gamed on PC. But it was the time for that console generation, my PC was too old and the three competitors were out. PC gaming was on a bit of a decline back then with everyone focusing on consoles and the indie market still not being a thing, so I decided to go for a console. I had to choose between the three available and the PS2 won by default. Sure, all three consoles had exclusives I cared about, but the PS2 had many, many more than the other two. It also had backwards compatibility with the PS1 and a DVD player. It really was the most complete package and I never regretted picking it over the other two.
Trip Hawkins, while still head of the 3DO company (Creators of the legendarily shit 3DO Interactive multiplayer) essentially bullying a game publication for better reviews is some shit. 3DO would go out of business shortly after as well, didn't they?
still, he dropped some cold hard truths about the association between media and advertisers in general, in any industry. Trip is an interesting person.
Along with Sega, his failed attempts in the 90s made everything more genuine and interesting to watch
When the subtitle says MGS 2: Guns of the patriots and you have to double take
The 'camera' lines were fairly hilarious.
LOL! Oh Trip, what were you thinking 😂 The irony is that the review was right, it kinda does look like a PS1 game.
There has always been a heavy Sony bias on this channel but that cold opening was just on another level lmao
I’m an Xbox player primarily but I won’t deny the fact that the PlayStation 2 is probably the best console ever made. Did you own a PlayStation 2 back then? Did you play the games? There’s yet to be anything like it. The industry had changed so drastically since then, we’ll never have a gaming space like it
@@EggEnjoyer I have a hard time
Buying that. Ps2 had some okay games, but people gloss over the fact that it had one of the worst launch libraries of all time and it’s first year had basically nothing to play. All of the gaming magazines at the time
Had articles saying things like “where are the games?!?!”. For all the hype about how powerful and next gen it was supposed to be, it had a bunch of low scoring titles that didn’t do anything the ps1 couldn’t do. Even SSX, the best launch title, wasn’t really better than Tony Hawk 3 which was out on PS1 at the same time. If you sold your PS1 to buy a PS2, you looked like a fool.
PS2 is my least favorite console, but I concede that I sold sold it after about a year and a half and went all in on Xbox. The only ps2 games I bought that I liked were GTA3 and Twisted Metal Black. I do understand that much better games came out later in the console’s lifespan. But I put a lot of weight on console launches.
@@JazGalaxy Well who cares about the launch year when it went on to have one of the strongest libraries of all time? Most people don’t experience the first year of the console and so that’s why no one talks about to. And to be honest, I’ve never seen any console with a good launch library. All mediocre trash, that’s why I wait a few years before upgrading. I think you just missed out tbh. But not too much cause the og Xbox was an amazing console too and it also had some pretty great games.
Did you know? The PS2 can play DVDs and PS1 games?!
And music CDs
right after school every couple of weeks I would always visit the game shops and pick up whatever gba and ps2 games were out good times 👍😁
*God Hand:* 3.0 from IGN
*Final Fight: Streetwise:* 3.8 from IGN
Someone better not tell Austin Eruption...
Honestly, knowing this just makes me dislike God Hand. I don't like it when people dislike art without thinking about opinions of people who may like it, so if this piece of art is made because the creator disliked another piece of art, it just makes me dislike that piece of art.
If you want to make something better, please don't make anything because nothing better can exist, because something being better is fully subjective and all you're actually doing is being condescending.
I guess God Hand deserved its negative reception after all. It may have been a good game, but it was made for the wrong reasons. I'm glad it failed. Shows him how to make a "better" game!
Classic games, good old times from the PS2 era
7:40 If only Hawkins had written that letter almost 20 years later, journalists would be agreeing with him and praising his boldness. Truly a visionary.
I think a lot of people want throw flak at that CEO for talking about how advertisers are the true demographic of their magazine. But in all honesty, I find it refreshing to see someone so high up being real about it. The truth is, that is exactly how the media industry is played. And whether it's one of the biggest gaming magazines or a simple UA-camr, the truth is that people who give poor ratings don't get the same revenue and opportunities.
I suppose there is something to be said about the context behind the letter, since it was a private letter and not a public display. But really that just leaves questions about who leaked the letter to begin with.
Wow this Trip person sounds like a stand up guy! And he founded EA?! Woah, the positives just keep coming!
Speaking of News outlets being enraged before a games release. Bully (Canis Canem Edit) also suffered the same pre release negative press when announced. I remember that it was being said it encouraged bullying (which it didn't, obviously). It even got some bad press here in Belgium. Even my mother forbid me to play it, even though I was 16 at the time and it was rated 16+. Joke was on her though, I already bought and completed it by the time she got around to forbid me to play it lol. Even though she suddenly started paying more attention to what games I was playing and checking the ESRB/PEGI ratings... But she didn't care about a month later, guess she realised she was at fault to when she bought me GTA 3 and Vice City years prior.
There's a reason why the PS2 topped the most sold console of all time!

Ironically, GTA3 and VC both aged much better than San Andreas
PS2 sold extremely well because it was a DVD player game system combo and was 1/2 the price of the Panasonic GameCube. As far as a number of games, the PS2 had an overabundance of shovelware. Quality over quantity. :P

After first holding the Xbox controller it just added to my already existing dislike of the Dualshock, but the Ps2 had many great exclusive games so just dealt with it.
Huge xbox fan myself but goddamn ps2 fuckin rocked too. Xbox to me was the underdog and my 1st I bought myself.
The Dualshock 2 is objectively better than the 360s controller due to the fact that the arrow keys don't suck ass and they didn't replace the R2s with a soft and small trigger, the PS2 one is easier to grip while the xbox's just rest on your hand
The idea to put the sticks at different heights helps the issue of thumbs touching each other, but it causes issues with certain types of games. Overall the xbox controller was made for FPS, but that's the worst genre they could have chosen to focus on with a console
Another small detail is that the buttons are closer togheter and have easier to grip borders, allowing to press various buttons at once with one finger more easily
The Dualshock 4 also fixes the issue of the thumbs touching each other by just increasing the distance between them, so imo that line wins in the end
True crime NYC is one of the most underappreciated games i played, I wouldn't be a my chemical romance and I wouldn't have sought out three cheers for sweet revenge
Thank you for the shout out to God Hand!
