Here's Why Carlos Left G2

  • I can’t believe I’m saying it, but Carlos “ocelote” Rodriguez has stepped down as CEO of G2 Esports.
He was initially on an eight-week suspension from the org but, after Riot Games revoked G2’s Valorant partnership, it seems like maybe the board decided that the damage from his recent actions was too severe.
So now that we’re here - what exactly happened, whose fault is this really, and what’s next for Carlos and G2?

As a CEO, Carlos’ video reflects badly on the company as a whole. If it starts hurting the business, then either Carlos has to go or G2 endorses his friendship with Tate. I believe that you have the right to party and be friends with whomever you want, but when you are a public representative, you have a duty to your company. At the time, Carlos was still the CEO of G2, so it is understandable that riot would not want to partner with the organization.

Carlos' problem lost G2 a spot in Valorant's franchised league when they were pretty much locked in. The fastest growing e-sport with an opportunity for the biggest orgs to go all-out and get the best possible talent and cement their fanbases and sponsorships, not to mention the millions they would save from RIOT handing them stipends. The majority of G2's stock is owned by 3rd party investors, they decide (through a board of directors) what direction the company takes and they decided Carlos wasn't good for them so they agreed for Carlos to step down as CEO.
Regi's problems while just as bad (arguably worse) didn't cause TSM to lose a spot in franchising (since they never secured a slot in the first place), Regi also retains the largest stock in TSM and has majority ownership, no board of directors can force him to step down even if they wanted to.
Also don't water down what Carlos did, he associated himself with Andrew Tate, that man is poison for PR, he was so bad that he had to be booted off of all social media platforms even though he was likely making them millions. Carlos is the face of G2, his actions reflect on the company so when Carlos parties with Andrew Tate then it might as well be that all of G2 is partying with him.
Edit: just in case it wasn't clear enough, it wasn't RIOT or twitter or whatever bs "na vs eu" narrative you're peddling that forced carlos to resign, it was the investors and sponsors who lost millions of dollars because the CEO and face of your company decided to not only party with a brand's worst nightmare, he also decided to double down and defend that friendship.

I don't understand why people are mad about this. Yes people can be friends with whoever they want but this isn't about that. This is about the CEO/face of G2 publicly showing support/not condemning Andrew Tate. Now you can obviously do that if the organisation and other companies you work with don't have issue with that. But in this case you are going straight against what Riot/G2 try to brand themselves as, causing major damage to the G2 brand and causing Riot to have to pick a side to avoid the brand damage spreading to them. In the end it's a business and his actions caused them money. Now this might not be a reason for you to stop being a G2 fan but as the internet shows there are plenty of people that do think that. Being in a public position like CEO means that your actions public or not can have major consequences for you and the company you represent.

Good take, but I feel like the issue is not as simple as you make it seem. The issue is not public opinion at all. If Carlos decides to do something that will cause its organization to lose fans, that's one thing. That's how all brands work. And that's also why most brands lie, and push for things that are popular, but not necessarily what they believe in.
The issue is when a game publisher/event organizer decides to kick a team from his event because the CEO of the organization is posting pictures with someone they don't like, because that gives a corporation power to label someone as good or bad. Imagine that some public figure that you like said something bad about Riot, and then the CEO of some team posted a video partying with them, and then they decided to kick said team from their events. Riot has such right, but that's at the very least an attack to that person's freedom to interact with whoever they want and to be themselves.
What that means is that Riot now has the power to dictate what's right and wrong, who is good and who is bad, and all of its business partners need to hide who they interact with, for example. Now expand that concept to even bigger corporations, Google, Facebook, Valve, imagine that they can now tell who you can associate with or not. What you can post online or not. They are all private companies, and wealthy or not that they don't need to worry about losing one or two business partners. That to me looks like a serious issue to personal freedom.
If Facebook decided to delete all content supporting some political view, it would be considered censorship. If a company does the same, but popular opinion agrees with it, it's fine. That's scary, because what is right and what is popular is constantly changing. This time, it might have been something you agree with, tomorrow it might be someone who you like.
Whether Tate is a good or bad person is beside the point. Cutting ties with a business partner because their CEO posted an interaction with a person you disagree with is horrifying.
But the hate from the public opinion is deserved.

A summary (more like small essay) of the 40 min Spanish stream from what i understood.
The first thing they address in regards to Carlos, is the summary everyone knows about Andrew Tates background, and Carlos' affiliation with him, and how Carlos doubled down on his non apology in his twitter account, and then Carlos liking posts from his supporters.
then comes the insider information that was discussed, which they said came from a meeting that G2 had that wasnt meant to go public. This however, the host of the spanish stream claims he would like to get another person to confirm the the claims he heard, these being: because of Carlos' decisions riot had left out G2 from valorant franchising.
Riot had approached G2 saying that Carlos had been blacklisted, as Riot didn't want Carlos to be associated with RIOT (him being CEO meant G2 was also got tied in). This is why despite being, and i quote, "assured a spot in valorant franchising" were ultimately left out by riot in their last minute emergency meeting.
this decision cost G2 estimated $15M to $40M dollars.
The thing is, it was also claimed, people feared this could potentially lead to them losing G2's spot in the LEC as well.
as a result of this it was quoted by Esportmaniacos that Carlos PRESUMABLY fired and "had" to sell his shares of the company (not 100% confirmed in that stream either, however we will see more arguments to support this later) hinted because of the language he chose to use in his goodbye video.
They go on to compare this to the dismantling of EchoFox, were EchoFox was also "forced" to sell the entire team in this case, because members involved in controversy refused to sell their share and back out of the company.
they go on to discus that despite these being completely different team organisations, the publisher that at the end of the day dictates the spot of teams in its leagues, in any of their games, is Riot. They discus the idea that if RIOT closed doors for the teams in one game (in this case Valorant) why wouldn't they also threaten to close doors for teams in their other games like league in the LEC.
They go on to argue that Riot perhaps wouldn't kick G2 out of the LEC because they are ALREADY a franchised team in that league and game, however the opportunity to threaten that is a power that riot still holds.
Esportmaniacos says that the timing of these events (regarding Carlos' RESPONSES to the initial video) was horrible. claiming that had it not been this close to riots valorant franchising announcement's, and had he not said anything, it is unlikely that Carlos would have been fired for "just a video", but it was more than just a couple of tweets.
They highlight the very basic business structural fact that if a person loses the company almost any sum of money, it is expected for them to be fired as a result.
Then they argue that Carlos cost the company an insane amount of money, stemming from valorant franchising, valorant sponsors, and possibly future sponsors from valorant as well.
They state that from 2 separate sources, they revealed that a sponsor from the LEC already called G2 stating they did not want to cancel their sponsorship deals with G2, and that they don't want to be associated with Carlos.
They also highlight all the previous controversial investigations involving Carlos, such as the terms posted on Perkz contract not allowing him to sign with fnatic which riot didn't like, for example, these investigations lead lot of people to complain about Carlos for a long time, stating that they were tired of Carlos doing whatever the hell he wanted. All these factors are certainly things one could be fired for, and just because Carlos was CEO of G2, it didnt exempt him from the judgement of RIOT, his own employees, colleague, and fanbase. (so speculate accordingly).
They also talk about the idea that Riot, having been recently sued by employees for gender discrimination, wanted to make their "post lawsuit views" known CLEARLY: that any association with misogyny would NOT be tolerated. this being yet another incentive for riot to force G2's hand in a way.
They lastly state that scenarios like this have happened before in esports, have happened before in regular sports, and that just because it's G2, one of the biggest orgs in the industry, it came as a surprise to so many people. They state that this was just ONE of the MANY decisions that RIOT could have taken, but it was still within the realm of possibility for them to double down this hard on Carlos, and within their right as the owners of the leagues and games in question. Riot wanted to distance themselves from anything that may be at all related to Andrew Tate and in turn misogyny. so when Carlos tagged Andrew Tate and his org in the same tweet, riot just did what they had to do to protect their brand, and G2 followed suit in what was essentially a mutual understanding of the business side of the situation, being in both their interests to remove Carlos, who has by now been stated multiple times as a liability for both parties. (just as mentioned in this video as well)
they sum up the events as Carlos basically saying "I party with whoever I want, I do what i want" and Riot responding with "I franchise whoever I want". Finally stating that, just like Carlos when he said "i draw the line here" riot in turn also has drawn their own lines in regards to what they deem acceptable, as drastic as those lines may be to some.
the only thing left is, what will be the next line that riot draws, what will be the next event that prompts such a response from an organisation. It can only be expected that riot will impose similar punishments and handle the situation the same in the future.
G2 will also have to change its image, find a new "face" to represent the org, as the general consensus among G2 employees is that they agree with the decision to remove Carlos despite how integral he was stating "there are other capable people within the org to make up for Carlos' absence".
they briefly mention the idea that people liked and disliked G2 because of Carlos, and how fanbases might change as a result of this and the fact that Carlos' absence will also likely be felt not only because of his role in growing G2 But LEC and esports as a whole.
G2 will have to first finish going down, losing sponsors, losing franchising, which will hurt in the "short term", in order to then recover and possibly even grow as a result.

But you have to be crazy(not you specifically, but people who believe that) to think Riot is protecting their brand from misogyny and that's why they wanted Carlos to step down... Perhaps their words were coated that way for the public. As someone who works in a Riot Games office they are clearly pushing a lgbtq agenda and their leftist political views onto the consumers. My guess is that Andrew Tate pisses off someone at top notch position in Riot Games and they simply didn't want some small fish like Carlos who associates with their organization to preach and market different political views. It's all it comes down to. Corporate level bullying bcuz someone's ego at Riot Games is hurt by Andrew Tate.

  • @rojalD
    @rojalD 2 роки тому

To the people who say "riot is a hypocrite" for working with lil Nas x and "canceling" Carlos, you are either stupid or argue in bad faith. Lil Nas x is a persona and a brand. It has a massage, yes, but that one is out there. Additionally it is not directed against a group or people, it's not even anti church or religion, he criticis the way it works, how it hindered him to be what he was and denies people their way. If you didn't know that, maybe you're not qualified enough to speak about this topic.
Carlos on the other hand just exposed a side nobody new he had and this side is directly against a whole sex -> sexist. I know Carlos did things in the eSports scene, supporting women teams and wasn't known to be too difficult. That's why the shock sits so deep especially as he doubled down on this topic and didn't think about why people got angry. In addition, Andrew Tate is, no matter what you say, a misogynist, woman (who find any worth within themselves) hater and with plans to use his rise in popularity and following ban off some social media to make money in shady ways off of it (bought a huge share in an mostly unknown social Media platform and directs people there now, in addition to his more than controversial PAID services). It is true, that i only watched little of that man but that little is disgusting. You don't have to be part of the sjw crowd or be part of a feminist group to see what his ideas are, propaganda against Woman. He is another dipshit in the world, using and profiting from the split that is already in our world and is actively deepening it. I thought after Trump there would be a change as people have seen hiw bad it is for our society but at last no. People do not learn, because they think, history doesn't repeat itself, but I can tell you: it sure does rhyme.
And at last i find it strange that so many people just think to themselves, i can skip the learning part when hearing about a topic and just go "i find this and this. I have an opinion about that" this is a trend in general, not just in a group or side.

They have all the things that make an org run, all they lost was a CEO with a personality. 2. Cancel Culture is ultimately a ton of people voicing their opinions on your public activity, and obviously people will not like you if you do something deemed irresponsible, and there is no way to avoid that unless if you live off the grid without social media. 3. Some people will do everything they can to take out someone in power that they don't like. Being in a position of power is a constant struggle to survive and make something beautifull. It often only takes one tiny slip-up to lose it all. The question remains wether this will have a positive or negative influence on the scene in the future.

I 100% get the Tate backlash, I can't stand the guy, especially considering the amount of money Carlos cost them with the Valorant bag fumble. But it's still just absolutely astonishing that Riot has the ability to "blacklist" a CEO because he hung out with someone who is seen in an unfavorable light at the moment. Mind blowing

Can I asked if Riot released their statement that they officially released G2 from the spots and also their reasoning behind the decision, because I have slight questionable stance for their action if that is not the case.
I means their decision might be appropriate, but I feel like they needs to clarify their stance for the fairness and transparency of all parties involved.
This might not related to our main topics but I want Riot to handle situation of these type better.

    Here's what I think:
Did Carlos deserve to be punished for what he did and the aftermath of it? Yes. Heavily too.
Did he deserve to be removed as the head of the organization that he built from the ground up? Frankly, yes (for me) but for the sake of respecting what the others say, let's say not really.
Now look, it's true that he committed career suicide and if it's true that he did sold all his shares, then I sorta feel bad for him. At the same time, it's really hard to sympathize with a man who hangs out with a misogynist and an ALLEGED human trafficker and then goes doubling down on what he did then apologizes (for company purposes) while proceeding to like tweets that favored him/ what he was doing.
    Edit:
Also, if riot did strong-arm him, then they're fucking hypocrites because why can't they do the same shit for their coo/ceo (idk what). This world is messed up, man.
