Thank you so much for this valuable information I am on a fixed income and I just cannot always run to the vet for everything,. but my dogs mean the world to me. You are doing a great service to people and their pets by helping out with trouble shooting techniques and care for less serious conditions.

Thanks Dr Becker and Roscoe. Like other commentators, I have watched several videos on ear infections/cleaning, but this is the one that has finally explained why my dog got the ear infection, why I need to clean his ears more often and why I need the vet to do a pathology examination so I can get the right medication for this infection.

Oh wow......with this wretched COVID craziness, I was not able to be in the building, let alone examine room, when my baby was examined today for his ears. So I was told he had a problem with his ears, here’s the medicines, pay me and be on your way! I wasn’t shown, told or anything about to care for his ears. THANK HEAVENS for UA-cam to show me and explain what to do!! Thank you so much for this information! 🙂

I'm going through that same experience now. My dog has an ear infection, but no vets have appointments immediately, so I asked a vet for the ear cleaning solution and the ear medication. Now I'm trying my best to apply and clean as described, and hope that the infection doesn't do serious damage until he can bee seen. No one at the vet office gave me any instructions. I'm reading tiny text on the med packaging and watching videos like this. Man, it's no fun for the dog or me.

My daughter disagrees with me, I use Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar, and a doubled over paper towel. Black thick , red swollen, and he hates it, then shakes an enormous amount out . Once it’s done , thedog is happy , but it’s every time, because I’ve seen this in my cat , and she has had the thick black gunk. She shakes a lot out ,the red is gone ,once I take the time , I must keep up on it , and it’s fine . The dog and cats hate it , but it works . It must be Braggs ,ACV from the Mother. Getting so much out and looking under a magnifying glass, omg , they’ve got fangs . I dilute it, but it’s amazing. If it’s really really bad and the ACV isn’t working, which is extremely rare , then 23-30 ppm Collidial Silver.
I know it’s working because once they smell it ,they hate it, but after it’s done , the red goes away ,the swelling, and in my case it’s every 4 days , or I’m talking about stinky thick black tar , when treated ,it’s gone and so is the red hot swelling. If I miss a week, it’s 10 times harder, so super important to check daily. ,as they shake to get it out ,and they can’t. Try to distract the animal, and I put a cap in a large cold bowl and stir and freeze in summer. I use a cotton rag , tear into pieces. Keep cotton clothes, you can use for squares , this way,the rag is thin enough to get all that thick black stink out, and you can discard,or wash . I would only keep the ones I dab the ACV on the red ,because it’s only a minuscule amount, whereas the thick tar is nasty. Throw away in old bag and seal , so they don’t spread .
Obviously you need to make sure it is mites ,but with over 40 yrs experience land so much success, I trust my animals. If the inflammation is still there and it’s hot after your doing everything you normally do, then try Collidial Silver. If that’s not working, then you’ll need to see a vet.
Once you get to know your animals “ Normal “ for them in particular, then you’ll know . Animals are smart. 15 minutes of nooo , is worth a pain free animal afterwards.
Plus in the water it comes through their pores and repels fleas ticks ,etc, and outside mosquitoes. I put on the back of their neck, the scruff . Works great and I comb it through the top back of neck . I keep mine in fridge ,so it’s soothing. The cold really helps to take down the inflammation.

There is a lot of good to be said about colloidal silver. Big pharma hates it because it removes the problem instead of covering it up. You can even make it yourself- just know what you are doing and pay attention to being safe.
ACV is also a miracle substance! I also like turmeric- a good anti- inflammatory and safe to use - but again research and know what you are doing before administering about application/dosage etc. You should always consult a good vet who understands these "natural remedies". Again I say - be careful, research and know what you are doing before you use these remedies!

I do what you do. I use ACV mixed with green tea or nettle tea for allergy swelling. I have a new dog and it was coming back immediately after my treatment cycle. A holistic vet said if that’s happening it’s an underlying yeast infection. I used the anti fungal cream he suggested. It worked quick as far as him shaking his head immediately and healed after 5 days of treatment. He’s been fine for 2 months. The active ingredient starts with a C but can’t remember the name. It’s for foot fungus. So this is the first dog I’ve had with the yeast issue. I clean the ears before any treatment with cotton wet with green tea.
He’s a dog with allergies so I’m changing things in his diet and adding some supplements with omegas, turmeric and probiotics. I starting to think probiotics are very important for our fur babies. I switched a supplement for my little dog and it had no probiotics and since spring has arrived she’s a mess with sneezy but also reverse sneezing. The vet and myself do not think this is trach collapse. Might be part of it but not sure. She’s 6. It is common for her breed.

Dr. Becker - thank you for taking the time and effort to produce this professional, easy to follow and understand, video tutorial discussion of issues concerning the care and treatment of dog's ears. My poodle was neutered several weeks ago and wore the Elizabethan collar for 10 days. During that time he constantly seemed to want to scratch his ears, and I rubbed them several times daily while he wore the collar.. After a day without the collar he began irritating the suture area which became red and inflamed, and the collar was reinstalled. Today, three days later, I put him in a donut collar that actually works so he cannot contact the groin area. I noticed that he is constantly shaking his head, but I originally assumed that it was because he is free of the E-collar but still cannot scratch the hear area. However, upon closer look I see that his inside ear flaps, and at the ear opening, is more that pink, and I now wonder if there is inflammation due to moisture buildup from wearing the E-collar for so long. I'll keep attention to it and if the head shaking continues I'll most likely take him to his vet for inspection - I'll remember to ask for a culture in the event there is a dx of ear infection. Thanks again for your excellent discussion.

Dr. Becker, you have opened my eyes to so much and Ik when to appreciate someone like you who is so rare. I hope you read this and I’d do damn near anything to have you be my dogs vet!!! This actually applies to this very video and others. I have a beautiful Standard Aussie I was so fortunate to adopt from my animal shelter locally... I adopted him after having my Mini Aussie for a couple years. She was so lonely during the day while I work that I felt it was time to get her a brother and me, my second fur baby. Anyways, after less than a full yr of having Granger (during this time I bathed him once a month sometimes twice depending on the need) he began showing allergy symptoms or at least I became aware of: itchy head to paw, paw licking, minor stuff (so I thought) till one evening after his bath and deshedding, hand drying; while I cleaned up, he rubbed layers of flesh off his nose! I walk in and my dog’s nose was bloody and inflamed. For the next month or so I did everything I could think of to heal his raw, then scabby nose. I gently washed with just water, bc it hurt and would attempt to use antibacterial ointment, etc. It’d start to heal and he’d rub off that scale-like scab. This repeated and during this time Covid was raging in my town and climbing so I was apprehensive to take him to the vet especially because he was his normal self minus a hard to heal nose. One day he went from happy-go-lucky, vibrant and rambunctious to sad, in pain, etc. I didn’t know he’d developed a horrific ear infection in both ears. Long story short, he nearly died the infection was so severe in his nose and ears but thankfully our vet biopsied pieces of his awful nose, cleaned out his ears and we got him on antibiotics and steroids which treated the ear infection, etc. One thing I can definitely say I learned is: don’t waste time, get him/her to a vet ASAP and ear infections can appear rapidly without being obvious unless you really know what to look for! My vet had a heart to heart with me and explained Granger more than likely has Lupus. Even after the biopsy, results were inconclusive but his history and symptoms nailed it! I suffer from an autoimmune disease as well, unfortunately and recently my diagnosis went from Psoriatic Arthritis to Lupus. I like to think Granger and I were meant to be. It’s just now I’m concerned because he has ear wax in spots which my vet said “don’t touch”, his ears are pink and flesh colored so I’m concerned that’s inflammation which I’ve explained to my vet. He rubs his head/ears on the couch, he shakes his head sometimes when I pet him like it tickles or irritates him and his nose still hasn’t healed all the way! He even sounds congested at times in his nose. It looks dramatically better compared to before treatment, it just hasn’t completely healed. My vet said the prednisolone is the only med that’ll treat the rest of his recovery. This poor baby of mine was on antibiotics once a day, and two doses of 20 mgs prednisolone equaling 40mg a day which helped (* dogs on prednisolone/prednisone can experience ACCIDENTAL urination so DON’T punish them for peeing on the carpet or couch while on these meds bc they can’t help or control it!!!) and now he’s currently tapered down to only 20 mg prednisolone every other day plus 3 doses of Claritin or it’s generic everyday!!! (*Claritin was recommended by my vet over baby/chewable Benadryl and it’s not only worked better but is much easier to hide in bites of hotdog for my suspicious fur babies!!!) All of this has helped tremendously but again I’m concerned because I strongly feel I need to clean and maintain his ears, yet my vet instructs me “No!” He’s explained that the prednisolone treats his Lupus, also calms down the raging itch in his ears, Nose and everywhere else. I’m sure he’s had patients accidentally impel their dogs eardrum before and that’s why. Ik better than to poke around with a q-tip and Granger wouldn’t let me anyways! My frustration with my vet isn’t over his dedication, he’s been very good to us! It’s that when I ask if there’s anything I need to watch for, prevent, maintain, and be proactive about he simply prefers I just give meds consistently, use water for cleansing if his nose cracks and bleeds or is rubbed off 🤦🏻‍♀️ and call if I’m concerned (he’s been incredibly supportive, kind and worked very hard to save my dog and that means everything!) And Ik you can’t diagnose or treat him through YT, I’m just very concerned for his current healing and recovery and his future health and life expectancy!!! It’s my job to know and be proactive!!! He’s been such a trooper through my lack of health and tolerated my bad days, etc. and worse still I failed him once by not reacting smart and fast enough with his initial nose injury/Lupus Flare that I owe it to him to be proactive and prevent ear infections like what he nearly died from in April and I want him to have quality of life and I be as educated with his Lupus as I have to be diligent with my own. It’s been incredibly devastating nearly losing him and being so sick myself that I don’t want to face that again and I certainly don’t want him to suffer or come close to death again!!! Anyways I’d love your thoughts, opinions, directions, instructions (Lay It On Me!!!) lol Dr. Becker and anyone else that reads this: don’t wait too long with injuries, don’t ignore allergies in dogs whatsoever!!! It might be a sign of Lupus in dogs, it might just be allergies but hopefully my hard lesson learned helps someone who’s unaware of Lupus or allergies in their dog(s)! 🤟🏽

Thank you this was very informative. Ive had dogs over many years only one has had allergies with skin issues. But non has presented with ear or eye problem, which last 2 have. We have had to re educate ourselves from scratch. You are the first person who talks about the pets behaviour. Our munchkin just kept scratching behind the ear & constantly shaking his head. Now & then hed loose his footing. At first i thought he was being an overactive excited puppy. Then I sat down to gove him a scratch &one ear sounded sloppy, like it had fluid in it .I called the vet. It looks like we have to keep an eye on it. Just like you said our humid hot summer in Sydney can cause fluid build up in some breeds. & since our munchkin is a mix (shar pei x staffy) better be safe than sorry.

Hi Doc! I have 6 dogs that started scratching their ears like crazy once it got warm outside & the grass grew. We live in Missouri & get the 4 seasons. We have a fenced in backyard. We keep our house at 66 degrees all year round and the dogs only go in the backyard to potty. We bring them in once they are finished so they won’t bother the neighbors or eat poop. Yup... it’s gross!! We’ve never had dogs with ear issues before. We’ve rescued a lot of dogs over the past 20 years too. I added two Silky Terrier puppies to the family last year. Sooooo... they may have brought something with them that is causing the issue. Good Dogs! The dogs get a flea pill as often as possible. It’s been awhile but we haven’t seen any fleas either. The Silky Terrier puppies are a year old now as of Today!! They haven’t been fixed yet. Anyways..... Our 4 older dogs our Monkey a 10 year old fat fixed Chihuahua, Teddy Bear 17+ year old fixed stocky male Silky Terrier, Heidi a 18+ year old very skinny female dachshund that doesn’t have many days left and Bindi a 13 year old fixed female Silky Terrier that is at a healthy weight. They have never had an ear issue before. Taking 6 dogs to the Vet with us being unemployed right now would be very difficult to do. Thank You recession. My hubby bought Well & Good ear cleaner. It states that it helps reduce ear oder & dissolves ear wax and debris. My hubby was using it on the dogs. He did get advice online to use Q-Tips on the dogs ears..... The Silky Terrier puppies and Heidi our dachshund seem to have more ear issues right now than the other three. Rowdy (Silky Puppy) has scratched her right ear to where it bleed & lots of crud came out two nights ago. I gave her Benadryl dried her ear & hair with a Kleenex. We are home 24/7 and spend the majority of our time trying to kick this ear issue. I found Curassb online that is an Antiseptic Ear Flush. Otic- Anti-Fungal, Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Yeast. I’ve been giving the dogs Benadryl at night to help the scratching and irritation. They don’t get baths often so having water stuck in their ear isn’t a concern. I am the only one that gives the dogs their baths and I keep the water from getting in their ears. They don’t swim or get in mud puddles.... I also bought a special shampoo called PetHonesty's Chlorhexidine Shampoo. It is great for Cleansing and Odor Removal. It's an effective treatment for dogs, cats and horses suffering from wounds, skin infections, rashes, hot spots and itchiness.
The addition of aloe soothes the skin and leaves a refreshing scent while 2% Chlorhexidine and 1% Ketonazole treat skin issues and infections.

Moisture in the ear canal produces a friendly environment for ear mites, who are responsible for ear infections. Apply sulfodene, a canine topical antiseptic, to the inner ear. All you need is a drop on your fingertip to apply the sulfodene. The sulfodene acts as a flushing agent and you will find a significant reduction in ear problems.

My dog is prone to ear infections every time I took him to the vet its always been yeast. I had then found out from the breeders that its the chicken in the food i had my dog on that kept causing the infections the breeders said to try coconut oil to treat the ear infections if another was to ever happen. The one thing I wasn't sure about was the method of how the coconut oil is given they said to give him a spoon full and let him eat it off the spoon. The thing i wasn't sure of is should it nit be a method applied to the ear?

I changed her food to several different brands. No help in the under $30/bag category. However, the magic happened when u started adding nutritional yeast for b vitamins. I get it from vegan section of grocery store. I love it on popcorn (tastes like parmesan cheese). But after two weeks her skin clears up and she's beautiful and happy, no more maddening itching and crying. I highly recommend. It's about $7-$8 a bottle and lasts almost a month feeding three dogs. I give it to them all. My 15 year old bichon-schitzu acts like a puppy again! Only problem, I live in a small town and our store is out! Going online to get some.

Thank you again. I just watched your video on yeast and left a lengthy response detailing my pug mixes chronic ear infection. As far as I know there was no swab done after 4 visits in 5 months. Maybe because the vet knew my financial situation he decided not to do it. He recommended very expensive recurring shots- no idea what- or prednisone for life. I’m going to try a new vet this time I’ll insist on a swab. Researching to find someone a senior can afford on extremely low SS income. Meanwhile I’ll be trying your recommendations.
One problem is this dog fights to the death having the solutions applied. I have yet to find a way to restrain him to properly get the liquid at least near the canal without him and me getting it all over both of us! Lol. Lately tried saturating the cotton balls and squeezing the stuff into the ear. Also the vet wouldn’t show me how to clean his ears or apply medicine ON my dog!
First he explained, then he showed me without actually doing it- mimed it. The next time I asked they showed me on a plastic model. None of this was helpful in helping me figure out how to restrain him to actually get the stuff where it belongs! Right now his ears are so stinky, red and sore that he’s yelping if I swab too hard. It breaks my heart. Thanks for all this information.
Now to look for a video on restraining this critter in a kind way.

    • @PEACEFULWARRIOR999

Use a metal or plastic ear cleaner so that no debri will stay there, u just have to study very well the anatomy of your breeds ear so you don't pop the ear drum or push anything down instead of just loosing it and flush it out. The technique is to have someone hold your pet while you work and be extra careful or just better yet if you can afford it pay a professional to do it like a vet or an experienced groomer. Bottom line is if your dog has ear problems that's not the problem the problem is allergies, wich is not a problem it's a cluster fuck. u need to find out what is producing the allergic reaction and then, wait did I mention in order to find out what your dog's allergic to consist of Test the food meaning either give him 1 same type protein for a week then give him 1 same type carb the next if nothing happens you just wasted 2 weeks of your life and can now move on to the mission impossible resequel-i ain't going no where, wich is getting your wallet ready, oh sorry unless you're a professional scientist of course, so back to hell, u need to pay someone to take allergy tests, wich only will tell you what u probably already suspected and now after giving your money away for a bad news like the dog has environment allergies or contact allergies or dust mites or even worse they tell you his allergic to fucking sugar or something, good luck finding food without sugar, good luck finding a new house in a new state city and new job because environmentally your dog is just fuckin it up, right? oh did I mention you need to also, if you don't move off course, put the little fucker inside a bubble and love him to death. but let's face it dust mites are probably running through your body as I hope u never read this truthful scandal.right, Right? Moral of the story, DON'T LIVE IN FLORIDA AND IF YOU WANT COMPANY JUST HAVE AN IMAGINARY FRIEND ITS 2020 AND THAT'S THE CHEAPEST SAFEST WAY TO GO. don't forget I love u and just trying to help. Even though I know I'm the one who probably need professional help. RIGHT? RIGHT can mean so many things. P. S: I adore my shih tzu I can deal with living in Florida aka tornado lounge but sometimes I look at my scissors and then look at their smelly ears and think, RIGHT? RIGHT? NO SIRI BOB IMMEDIATELY MY OTHER SIDE OF MY BRAIN SAIDS REMEMBER YOU HAVE 2 TESTICLES, ULL BE AIGHT WITH ONE I'M SURE.

    • @clarekelsey496

You get into the horizontal canal by massaging the base of the exterior ear for *at least* 2 minutes. Listen closely for a little bit of sloshing sound as that causes the penetration of the liquid solution you are using. Also the sloshing causes the wax or debris to loosen so when they shake their heads that wax & debris comes to the surface where wiping out with good cotton ball or gauze pad. Sticking a little skinny q-tip only pushes anything that would become loosened actually become more packed in. Humans are told to not use q-tips in our ears deeply - which I do all the time for 50 yrs because i can feel instantly when I'm close to the ear drum- that is NOT possible w/the lengthy horizontal canal w/a dog; plus a q-tip cannot bend into that long canal. If you can't put a gauze pad around the tip of your tiny finger will get far deep enuf w/out pushing the debris in their tighter. If you look at the anatomy of the ear canal, this'll make sense. Look also at ear cleaning by Dr. Adam Jones, it demonstrates how to massage and how to let dog shake head and get the deeper stuff loose.
