- As America takes steps to improve our energy security, home-grown fuel sources are more important that ever. One of the fuel sources of the future is algae, small aquatic organisms that convert sunlight into energy and store it in the form of oil. Scientists and engineers at the Energy Department and its national laboratories are researching the best strains of algae and developing the most efficient farming practices. This edition of Energy 101 shows how oil is extracted from algae and refined into sustainable biofuels.

Municipals have a great scope for cultivation of algae thus can produce electricity and thereby help to clean the air surrounding.
Algae also cleans wastewater. It makes glycerine too, which are used in some medicines.
It's 2020 & still waiting for the day, when algae will be used as fuel...

The best thing about algae based fuels or any other carbon based biofuels is that in the worst case scenarios they only release as much CO2 as they take in from the air, so they are technically carbon neutral, except for the extraction process, which consumes electricity, or the solvents.
Solar power can solve that
In CA they actually announced no EV charging after 4pm on certain days! I'd rather diversify by exploring biofuel options such as algae, alcohol fuels and hydrogen (direct or via LOHCs) than placing all the eggs into one basket (battery tech/EVs)
After some good algae strains are determined, maybe beefed up by hybridizing, wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) would be really good locations for big operations of algae production, or testing large processes, etc.. Not all WWTPs would work... But some have extra land/acreage (ponds, etc), have anaerobic digesters that produce large volumes of CO2 and methane (on about 2 to 1 ratio), gases are considered waste, some use the methane for generators to power plant equip. during peak power. There's trace nutrient effluent water, already slightly warmed from plant processes. And WWTP staff are oriented toward large bio-processes and handling, etc.. An algae operation could mesh nicely with a WWTP.
Amazing, now let's do it. It's a safer fuel for our planet's environment. Save our earth.

Why aren't we funding this?
Sadly, there's inconvenient laws that deter, impede, such development, R&D, etc.. For instance, I was recently reading about a law, critical to large scale algae operations since a large scale operation would want to use waste CO2....The law actually prohibits the use of waste CO2 for recycling and problematic legal language. Anyway, this law is now under discussion as needing revision.
I doubt that. The huge soda companies buy tons of C02 to be put in their soda and soda fountains. Even beer companies do this. Why would there be a law preventing an algae farm from doing this? I actually have a peeve about how we criticize companies for emitting CO2 but not a peep for the large soda companies from buying or making CO2 and pumping it right back into our environment via soda water. Their argument is that they are taking CO2 that's already out there and by pumping into water they aren't adding net plus into the environment but I don't buy that argument.
I think what may exist, legislatively speaking, is legalese tailored by Big Oil for BIg Oil protection from threat of CO2 being used specifically in non-fossil oil/fuel development and production, etc. And not intended to compromise corp. use otherwise. So Big Food (that includes the bread prod.) and distilleries/breweries aren't effected by the specific legislation.. Wastewater/sewage facilities with anaerobic digesters produce vast concentrated amounts of CO2, wasted into the atmosphere. I think it would be absolutely wonderful if I'm wrong on this...-But I strongly suspect Big Oil had their legal people cover that threat some decades back. Wastewater/sewage use of its own methane is legislated so as not to threaten commercial grid energy providers. So even vast amounts of produced methane must be burnt off with huge "waste gas" burners, thus protecting big commercial power grid providers: Edison, PG&E, etc.
Oil prices are down due to fracking. Biofuels aren't competitive in the market (at all...)

What little electricity it takes to grow the algae, it takes far less than drilling, pumping, and transporting the fossil crude oil it can replace. If you grow a little extra algae then you can use that biofuel to generate the electricity you need to grow even more until it becomes self-sustaining.
We need more focus on bio fuels vs EVs it would allow the current infrastructure of vehicles to exist and not require such a huge overhaul. Carbon based fuel is interesting like Bill gates fuel

For those interested in algae for fuel, biotech...Online, check out "Algae Industry Magazine."..Some of the online articles and ads also include videos.... I'm not affiliated with the magazine. Developed nations need to ditch fossil crude-oil use/industry. It has caused (and continues to cause) serious geopolitical problems. Regardless of Big Oil "mouthpieces" that hawk a supposed infinite abundance of fossil crude, and promote continued addiction, it is not responsible, on a number of practical and ethical reasons.
BioEthics of algae development/use are inarguable..-Allowing developed nations to both regain and exemplify a genuine striving for moral high-ground, and responsible Human Progress, rather than contributing to growing interest in the Regress of humanity for a more primitive "balanced" existence with Nature. As it is, younger generations are seriously being "turned-off" by what they see resulting from all the unethical and dysfunctional outcomes of fossil-crude oil industry, such as poisoning the oceans, etc.. Algae bio-industry outcomes and impacts can be constructive and healing.
Wait does it expire like gas would in 3 months if it sits?
And to add to that, once the oil is refined, that also needs to be sold back to the public. Therefore creating a cycle.
Algae holds a true promise, I know it!

+Edmond Healy I believe Hydrogen is embedded in the membranes of the mitochondria of an algal cell. The transfer of hydrogen to electron carriers pumps the transport of electrons. The source of energy comes from this transfer of electrons and hydrogens.

Can you still make byproducts like food/plastics/beauty products/vitamins & pharmaceuticals after you've refined and extracted the biofuel oils? Seems like profits those industries would more than make up the differences in cost and once the BIG Oil villains are out of business, there would be just as many job openings from manual labor to corporate to engineering & other sciences.

Big Oil captured this and plugged the plug. Now we're doomed. Biggest project is "Brilliant Planet" set up in Morocco for 1200 co2 tons per year.

With Hemp? Dear god it would take a continent, not to mention copious amounts of water.
That is also considering Hemp could even be made into fuel. It is used for oils, but only for things like cosmetics primarily, it never could produce any real effect.
Say it could however, this goes back to the Continent problem, where will you grow food if your farmland is turned into producing oil?

Beside, the extensive researtch on algae strain could be developed into creating algae with food grade capable for human consumption. In my opinion this is the type of crops that you want for sustainable community in post apoc future

I like Algae biofuel because it is alternative energy to Oil. Soon later Oil is going to ran out and everybody would start to panic. Oil destroyed the environment but Algae doesn't. Oil is expensive including diesel. Algae is cheap.
Fossil fuels have destroyed the environment but algae will only halve the amount of co2 in it (assuming half is stored and half is being burnt) the problem will not go away and the temperatures will still keep rising. Nuclear fusion is the future while algae are a means to clean the environment but we must not burn them again

So do solar panels. However you add in the minerals from the earth and fossil fuels (both which are finite) needed just to manufacture them, in reality you're not getting much energy from algae if at all.
Lake Okeechobee has a ton of it why not pull it out of there and use that instead of making it?

Big caveat is the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus needed to grow algae. Still has great potential though.

hmmm... 2018 and this still isn't commercially viable. Why?
competition by cheap natural gas, oil and coal protectionism, low energy-to-cost ratio, and lack of R&D. Algae just doesn't take in enough energy to justify using it, even if using ethanol itself is more efficient the process just doesn't produce enough. Companies like exxon mobil estimated it would take 20 more years to make it viable(and that's conservative). Understandably, they may be lying so they don't have to put work into it, but really the only people with enough resources and time to make it viable are big companies.

It takes more energy to create hydrogen then energy you get from using hydrogen. Of course fossil fuels are getting more expensive, we are running out of them. However all of these "renewables" will never give us as much energy density as fossil fuels.

yes, but the algae you grow at home needs to be refined to make it usable, and I doubt that anyone could simply afford one of those refineries. Yes, people can grow the algae at home, but then they would have to sell the algae to the refineries.

Algae is a cheap and reliable source for energy consumption uses. I don't think hydrogen is a joke. In addition extracting fossil fuel are inherently becoming more costly, so to say the least the peak for cheap energy is on a down ward trend.
