You are really great at explaining every detail as you go along....if I think I have question, you answer it every time. You're a fantastic teacher...thank you for showing us how you work.
Good morning Don, I just turned 50 last month and I'm very interested in going into leather working. Just started watching some of your videos and I just wanted to thank you for all your advice and tips. Looking forward to seeing more! Thank you again. Kenneth Austin

Cool
6:13 "You can't really screw them up." Every time somebody says that to me, I manage to prove them wrong.
lol. 👍🏻
I'm also good at that... 😅
Do you only use the One Shot pinstripe and sign enamel?
I buy some of your patterns i just wondering What would be a range price for sale this?
Where did you get your stitching g
So I dyed the leather how you did but when I went to oil with vegetable oil my tooling is really dark. I’m assuming because it’s wet from the oil inside. But how long does it take to go back to normal so my tooling isnt dark again?
How much do you sell them
Did I hear wrong that there is a leather man variation? I can’t find it on the site.
If I were to hand stitch these, what spacing would you recommend on a diamond prong chisel?
+TheLaramieP I am not familiar with those chisels since I use an overstitch wheel and awl to handstich but I'm sure any spacing would be fine... I would lean towards the closer of what spacing you have since a tighter stitch looks cleaner.
Very helpful vid. Thanks for uploading this.
Much appreciated ! 🤝🏻👍🏻
Interested in selling your singer sewing machine when you trade up? Enjoy watching your channel. I have Parkinson’s from agent Orange in Vietnam. I took a year and a half - two years off from leather work. My PD wreaks the quality of my work, but I do it for fun and give everything away. I have a Cowboy 4500 like Bruce Cheney. Also have a Singer 15-91. Need something for lighter projects.
Do you happen to have any videos on hand stitching? I want to make a couple knife sheaths (fixed blade) for knives I have made, but don't want to purchase a sewing machine.
The pattern I bought from you: front side and back side didn’t matchup, and they are too small
Hobbs NM here where can I purchase the knife pattern?
Great instructional vid and very helpful. Thanks a bunch.
+Bill Gosnell thank you sir!
What did you mean when you said you backstitched?can you do a video about handtooling one of these?
thanks don, weirdly i have just made some axe covers for a friend and have been looking for a decent tutorial on this style of knife sheath, you do quality work thanks for sharing :-)
Hi Don, just discovered you on You Tube today. Some great leatherwork tutorials, especially the ones on dyeing. Really like your pancake knife sheath too. They're not really used here in the UK, so maybe I can corner the market! Looking forward to watching more of your videos. I love the detail you go into and the handy little tips based on personal experience. Thank you.
+Graham Richards thanks so much dude! It's great to have a fan over in UK! I'm sure u can sell a lot of those shealths over there bud! Good luck!
Man, another good video. That glue pot makes me laugh. It looks like something from the stone age.
That was a very well explained process, I really appreciate you sharing it. I'm definitely going to make one of these for my leatherman thank you for the inspiration
I am new to leather tooling but I have I found your tuts very helpful in learning the basics and then finding my own style...I am a artist/designer that fell in love with the artistry and craftsmanship behind leather tooling. It is another art form that speaks to me...Thank you for your down to earth approach and willingness to share your craft with us all...
+MsMassabielle thank you so much for the kind words and good luck!
Thank you for sharing this video, Don! Quick question: after you antique, do you apply any kind of top coat? If not, does the finish remain water resistant?
Excellent video .. U are methodical and comprehensive. Thank you
Muy buen video estoy aprendiendo gracias
Nice and easy! Nice job!
I'm also making them thanks for the tips brother
Very tasteful paintings. I like everything
Thank you! These are really nice
May sound like a crazy question Don, but on your 2 tone brown method, which Fiebings Brown are you using?
+Troy N not silly at all man! I use the medium and the dark brown... mostly the dark
Is there a good way to finish the belt slots?
Great video, very good instruction, thanks
When you walk into a saddle shop and it's clean as a whistle. You know he doesn't have enough orders. When you walk into a saddle shop and it's a mess. You know he's covered in orders...but when he has 200 bucks worth of glue stuck to the outside of his glue pot. You know he's as wealthy as a Greek Tycoon...LOL
+Kel4everSmiles ha ha!!!! I sure wish the wealthy part of that statement was true! Lol!!
Hey Don, I have searched for that knife handle you used that accepts injector blades. I tried Hobby Lobby first and then several other places. Can you provide any other info such as who makes the knife handle? I currently use X-acto or snap off utility knives but I really like the one you used.
May I make one small suggestion sir? You mention a power sander. I use a regular Home Depot Ridgid Oscillating sander and use all three grits. Saves me so very much time. Thanks for this. I am headed to buy the pattern pack.
how about a pancake holster for a revolver?
I will see what I can do! I do have some 1911 holsters to make...
Very nice project.
Thanks again for another great video
DON you are one of the best out there. i have a question though... i made a belt and first i oil the belt like you showed in your video... than i use brown stain some antic and dark brown diy and finally i used tan kote, and for the edge i used gum tragacant, but i notice that on the belt are starting to appear some discoloration i mean that in some spot and on the edges the Diy is almost gone and the leather is not looking nice anymore. the belt is only 5-6 month old
what do i doing wrong?#
sorry for my english i leave in Berlin Germany...and thank you again
very nice job. do you make scabard for the leatherman supertool 300 ?? again great job
Injector blades? Like the kind people shave with?
Yes sir! I buy them from a company in bulk but graingers carry’s smaller quantities.
Hi from Singapore! Thanks, Don. Really interesting! It's inspired me to get started on a Leatherman pouch for a friend. Do you have a pattern for one of those or are they pretty easy to work out?:)
Is the larger pattern for the leatherman on your website? Can't find it
+Anthonys jigs I thought I had them up on the site and misspoke... I will try and make a pack for them. Thanks a bunch!
Very nice Don, Love your work, I have learned a lot, great videos
Great video, thanks so much for sharing your skills and knowledge. :-)
Good job yet another great video. Is there somewhere I can get a general pattern for a angled pancake knife sheath?
Don,
Great Video!
What was the name of your groover I'm sorry I missed it thank you..
What knife are you using to cut the leather out?
Thanks
Don, thanks to you and all of your videos and patterns, my tooling and leather work in general has vastly improved in just the year that I have been at it, so thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the trade!!
What color and brand of dye were you using
Where do I find the pattern downloads?
Wow that looks so cool. 👍
I really like the grooving tool, can you tell me what the brand name is or where it came from?
It's a horseshoe brand groover and I'm sure I got it from weaver.
I want to make a knife sheath and it has an oversize guard how do I go about doing so
What sewing machine would u think would be good for a beginner?
The cobra machine is suppose to be really good and affordable. And they have great customer service from what I hear.
they do have great customer service and i'm a beginner but the cobra makes my sewing like a professional
What is the weight of leather you are using for these?
Where did you buy your leather groover .
What ounce is the leather you are using here?

ty

Thanks for the video enjoyed it
nice video .but poor sound.
Thanks Don, another fantastic and helpful video. Just subscribed your channel ... Thanks again Adriano
+Adriano costa thank you!
Thanks Don for another great video.
Slepho Q
Is it pretty easy to hand sew?
They aren't too bad... Hand seeing is time consuming but it makes a beautiful stitch.
Great video!! I want to make a knife scabbard for a knife that was a gift but the knife isn't your standard pocket knife. How do you determine the width of the pouch area where the knife fits?
I usually try and leave 3/8 - 1/2” around knife depending on thickness. Thanks so much!
Hey Don I just got your template for this video on your website but it's a little to small for my knife how do I measure to make it bigger (wider) I have different knife I want to make them for
Maybe by increasing the size on the print setting right before getting ready to print?
Did you just get that nifty little razor blade deal at hobby lobby? Looks like an exacto knife with a razor blade instead but I can’t tell
+Aubrey Cobel yes I got it at hobby lobby and it’s the big fat one... this one will hold an injector blade like the safety skiver blades
don are you in texas
Saludos desde Venezuela.....
Beautiful work
what grade sand paper
Thank you! That was great.
l love pancakes
U dun good hoss!
Thank you
Thank you
Hi , first of all thanks for the tutorial it's a great accessorie, and second , what is the thickness of the leather in mm ?
9-10 oz is the thickness but that’s how you buy it is in ounces
What type of glue do you use is it a mixture of different kinds??? Please let me know
It's just contact cement... I buy locally in five gallon buckets
Super Arbeit, danke!😋
Do you think a Juki DDL 555 would be a good sewing machine to use to sew knife scabbards?
I had a Juki heavy duty that I bought new, and it was nothing but a headache. Paid like $1600 US for it, and it was in the shop more that it was out. I wouldn't pick up the tread after a short while of use. The shop where I bought it told me "It's because it's Japanese and the tolerances were really close" Yeah, I bought that.... NOT! I wouldn't recommend it.
Thank you Brad for the input. Like everybody eles I want a machine but finding the right one is the chore.
Don, why do you leave the back of the sheath unstained? Is it treated at all?
Just a personal preference... no real reason. But yes it has a tan kote sealer over oil.
@@DonGonzalesMaker thanks for the reply.
What brand of leather, boss?
+Bushcraft Beats I use Herman oak almost exclusively. I am not against using import if it's good and depending on what I'm making. I also really like wicket and Craig.
did you put the olive oil over the hole piece including the dye, or just the tooling section?
+Chris M I oil over the whole thing... it will help to even out the dye as well. Thanks a bunch!
thanks
What groover is that?
It’s a horseshoe brand grooved and weaver sells them I believe
muito interessante seus vídeos espero fazer peças assim parabéns pelo trabalho! !!
